I find that My vertices are not merged when I try to union a cube and an octogon. Any idea what is going on? Thanks for the tutorials

Why don't you tell us what keys you are pressing. You do sometimes but most of the times you don't. You're zipping along merrily merging verts but not saying how you are doing it. Your videos need to be more self contained. From watching this video I could not replicate what you have done.
