Mother Love Bone was IT!! If it weren't for the death of Andy, there'd be no Pearl Jam, who is just a pale comparison imo. This album has been on constant rotation for 20 years now on my playlist. RIP ANDY!!
Grunge isn't a type of music, it was a fashion statment. There's no such thing as "Grunge Music". It's Rock N Roll from the 90's and it was all awesome in their own seperate ways.
(thats for all the fanatical 'ten-tards' out there. but... yes. it was a great album even tho imho their later albums progressed and were at least as good, for different reasons. btw don't make fun of mental retardation)
i liked mlb more than pearl jam started listening to them in 94. just a little note, btw, pearl jam had other songs besides 'jeremy' and other 'albums' besides 'ten' :)))
Why did grunge fans always make fun of, and whine about the L.A. glam rock scene when, with the exception of Nirvana, almost all of them were the Seattle version of Guns & Roses and Motley Crue, etc. Utter hypocrisy. Metallica were truly the only inovative band to come out of the 80s.
@jollyroger1889 the la la glam rock was embracing the commercialism and established corporate images, they drank the kool aid while grunge was not seeking fame, it came to them they were the not glam, they wore value village clothes, it was a totally different movement. I was there at the time and use to see most of the bands before hollywood came knocking down the doors. there were so many great bands that did not get famous but it was a fun time to be around, it was so cool
@jollyroger1889 Almost all of the bands that came out of Seattle back then were labeled "alternative". The Glam Metal or Big Hair Bands of LA were anything but that. For the most part their music was sexist, superficial and commercial. They were on heavy rotation on MTV at the time. The Seattle scene grew like a reaction to it. While MLB might share some similarities with GNR, this is not a bad thing. GNR had raised the bar on the 80's glam metal scene ,and helped hasten its demise.
@SonsCompassMusic :) Pearl Jam was formed by Gossard and Ament from MLB so similarity is obvious... but 90%? Too much...! I think 50-60%.and 40-50%GnR (Andy's vocal and Fairweather's way to play too)
When I hear the last notes of this song, I can't help thinking to Layne Staley when he says "follow me down sexual chocolate baby" in the song Real thing... Maybe it's only me but I can't help thinking to him when I see Andrew Wood singing.
For anyone who likes this stuff there is tonnes of music out there you may like. Melvins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Meat Puppets, Mudhoney, Green River, Temple of the Dog, Tad, Bush, Alice In Chains, Mad Season, Soulsavers, Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.
The last great era for music IMO...Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, the late 80's/early 90's rap and hip hop scene...great times!!
hey also listen to Mad Season for somethin more chilled out that's similar to Alice in Chains. Skid row are also great and all the bands DCRAY mentioned are awsome!
to DCxxRay,Motherlovebone lover is me,however, may I suggest a great sounding band called Fasterpussycat?! esp.wake me when its over album.not a true match but fantastic original guitars and vocals!
understand that if u loved the whole grunge thing or hated it you have to thank this band at the time this was what seattle music was all about. everyone doing its own thing personally it was one of the worst things that ever happened to rock when andrew oded if this band had stayed together i think everyone would have looked at that music with a different eye.
@DCxxRay soundgarden, love battery-which ive only heard 1 song by so far but that one sounded good, and temple of the dog, aic, and mad season are all closer sounding to pearl jam than this
@DCxxRay Soundgarden, Stone temple Piolots, Silverchair, Alice in Chains, The Toadies, Mudhoney. Specifically Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger, Superunknown and Down on the up side are all very very solid albums.
@DCxxRay I'd tell you to go for Green River, Screaming Trees, Skin Yard, Dead Moon and lots of other awesome Seattle underground bands that didn't get the spotlights on them.
@DCxxRay You're entitled to your opinion, but I think Chinese Democracy was awesome. All of those different musicians on one album made for a very UNIQUE album.
@DCxxRay Andrew was a big Kiss fan,but the sound of MLB came from everyone listening to different stuff. Same way Blood Sugar Sex Magic RHCP came together, Just start clicking on vids that come up on relate bands when you play MLB stuff and you might find some killer stuff!
@DCxxRay A band that hasn't got many similarities with MLB, but still awesome: Blind Melon. Check 'em out. You'll might doubt in the beginning, but the more you're listening to it. The more you'll like it.
@DCxxRay even Pearl Jam doesn't sound like this. I think after Ten, Stone and Mike lost their step. And I forget who's playing lead, but he has more of a "Living Colour" sound than Mike does. Stone and Jeff's best work was done with Andy \m/
@DCxxRayTry 1.Temple of The Dog: Hunger Strike 2. Skin Yard: 1000 smiling knuckles 3. Stone Temple Pilots: wicked garden or trippin on a hole in a paper heart.
@DCxxRay There's lots of bands like this. Try Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, The Green River, and the Screaming Trees. All of them were some of the original grunge bands.
imo Mother Love Bone can't be pidgeonholed, they fit no particular format which was so refreshing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,a very versatile band, Andy was a chameleon and a great vocalist and lyricist, if you're familiar with drug addiction some of his lyrics make a lot of sense .......the chemistry between Stone, Jeff, Bruce, Greg and Andy is palpable and you see it in the few vids that are available, those guys were having the time of their lives up there performing......

We are looking to release 21 years after the death of Andrew Wood who was a very good friend of mine. A video never before seen footage live in concert, along with a few songs never heard before as a 2 DVD/CD set. I'm sure most who love MLB will enjoy this video. However we would like to have a response from you people if you would be willing to purchase a video of such. Please post your opinion here if you are interested. Thank you
We are getting ready to release a LIVE movie from 1988-1989 never before seen. Would you be interested in buying a copy? It's in production now and should be ready for release on the date of my friends death March 19th. send email to...
@withthelightsout27 indeed. without hair bands, there would be no grunge. As a fan of both, i feel glam metal naturally transitioned into grunge. Early grunge had some glam looks, except they were rather disheveled, or "non-pretty"
@jaketheman091 try "punk." glam bands had thier share of influence but punk played a bigger roll in "grunge's" development the whole anti'social perception and unrest of the late 80's early 90's added to the revolt against corporate "cock-rock" and sparked a HUGE change in the face of "pop" music or mainstream music because "pre-grunge" everything was GNR or ACDC, KISS or Motly Crue, lat Ozzy or Bon Jovi...you get the picture, things changed and the 90's ushered in the era of "alternative" rock
Great band, but they have nothing to do with grunge. He looks glammed out to the max, and it sounds like it could be a DLR song. Man this song is soooo trippy, but I am NEVER touching heroin!
This band is more of a history lesson - They broke the molds in how music would be recorded, distributed, and even marketed... Coming out of the dearth of pop music where the top acts of 1988 were Rick Astley, George Michael, and (gag) Tiffany, MLB wrote music that was inspired by Page & Plant - yet built upon the angst of growing up in soggy Seattle.
While most people connect MLB with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, almost every band since has been influenced - either musically or marketing-ly...
@Autopilot234 thanks auto :) I just started listening to their songs. That's why I didn't know his name. But I just realized that it's almost a crime not to know andrew wood!
@rucas75 same here. i'm really into Nirvana, early Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden so one day i decided to look deeper in this genre and its really good. now i'm also listening to MLB, Mudhoney, and Temple Of The Dog. you should check them out too
@Autopilot234 like all those bands. except for mudhoney. I'm sorry grunge lovers but i hate it. I just can't stand the lead singer and "let it slide".... i still don't know mlb :S
@Autopilot234 check out Jesus Lizard, Butthole surfers, Dinosaur Jr, Hole, Green River (early grunge, not really categorized as grunge but it's good) and of course The Melvins.
@999deauville999 i love Dinosaur Jr. and the Butthole Surfers and of course if you've heard of MLB you've at least heard the name Green River, just like if you heard Nirvana you've heard the name The Melvins, but i dont like Courtney. Hole is a good band but i just dont like Courtney

very metal/hair for the scene
withthelightsout27 1 year ago
@withthelightsout27 indeed. without hair bands, there would be no grunge. As a fan of both, i feel glam metal naturally transitioned into grunge. Early grunge had some glam looks, except they were rather disheveled, or "non-pretty"
jaketheman091 1 year ago
@jaketheman091 try "punk." glam bands had thier share of influence but punk played a bigger roll in "grunge's" development the whole anti'social perception and unrest of the late 80's early 90's added to the revolt against corporate "cock-rock" and sparked a HUGE change in the face of "pop" music or mainstream music because "pre-grunge" everything was GNR or ACDC, KISS or Motly Crue, lat Ozzy or Bon Jovi...you get the picture, things changed and the 90's ushered in the era of "alternative" rock

wood' voice sounds like a combo of robert plant's singing and axle rose's snarling.

There are 20 dislikes? Who in their right mind would dislike this?

Great band, but they have nothing to do with grunge. He looks glammed out to the max, and it sounds like it could be a DLR song. Man this song is soooo trippy, but I am NEVER touching heroin!

MLB were like the Van Halen of grunge

this seems influenced by the red hot chilli pepper's mother's milk album. funky and nice.

quite a good band, never listened til i got into that "Hunger Strike" track which is pretty wicked too. Sounds a sh*tload like T-Rex to me.

And it definantly sounds dirty at the end of the song, the grunge does show.

While most people connect MLB with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, almost every band since has been influenced - either musically or marketing-ly...

is it just me or the lead singer is very "robert planty"?
rucas75 1 year ago
@rucas75 his name is andy wood and yeah robert was an insperation to him so its not just you
Autopilot234 1 year ago
@Autopilot234 thanks auto :) I just started listening to their songs. That's why I didn't know his name. But I just realized that it's almost a crime not to know andrew wood!
rucas75 1 year ago
@rucas75 same here. i'm really into Nirvana, early Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden so one day i decided to look deeper in this genre and its really good. now i'm also listening to MLB, Mudhoney, and Temple Of The Dog. you should check them out too
Autopilot234 1 year ago
@Autopilot234 like all those bands. except for mudhoney. I'm sorry grunge lovers but i hate it. I just can't stand the lead singer and "let it slide".... i still don't know mlb :S
rucas75 1 year ago
@rucas75 MLB = Mother Love Bone and its cool about Mudhoney. to each his own
Autopilot234 1 year ago
@Autopilot234 lool! mlb = mother love bone! i'm so blind! :P
rucas75 1 year ago
@Autopilot234 check out Jesus Lizard, Butthole surfers, Dinosaur Jr, Hole, Green River (early grunge, not really categorized as grunge but it's good) and of course The Melvins.
999deauville999 1 year ago
@999deauville999 i love Dinosaur Jr. and the Butthole Surfers and of course if you've heard of MLB you've at least heard the name Green River, just like if you heard Nirvana you've heard the name The Melvins, but i dont like Courtney. Hole is a good band but i just dont like Courtney
Autopilot234 1 year ago
@Autopilot234 i know but hey.... well ... she was kinda hot at those days lol.... or O: nooot? hahaha
999deauville999 1 year ago
@999deauville999 yeah and their daughter looks good too. i'm born in 93 so i can say that without sounding creepy
Autopilot234 1 year ago
awesome shit, way fucking better than what would become Pearl Sham.
Alhambrattp 1 year ago
Andrew Wood's style wouldn't have translated well to the "grunge" era and he probably would've been dropped from the band had he lived. Quite ironic.

20 yrs later and still awesome !!!!
EaduardHairsticks 1 year ago 18
This band would of been massive,As the story was born
Greenriver/Malfunkshun = Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone
Mother Love Bone = Temple of the dog
Temple of the dog=Soundgarden and Pearl Jam
Names that should be mentioned are Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. They were in Greenriver=Mother Love Bone= Temple of the Dog=Pearl Jam.
SoundGarden may of been, But Pearl Jam may of not formed as Eddie meet Stone and Jeff and Matt Cameron throught Temple of the dog.
