Hey, Sean, I've been enjoying the heck out of this clip for months now, and I've been wondering: is there an easy-to-explain reason that you tune DGBD instead of CGBD? Better scale access? More convenient for bass-strum playing?
Hey Sean that was amazing, I need my fur coat and some college buddies now. Have you ever heard of the Orlando brand banjo? I play blue grass on one and can't find out squart about this maker of fine banjos. This thing is an art piece. Anyway super happy tune man loved it!!
Your Great ! I live in Phila, Pa. and the Mummers String band that marches down Broad St. Every year play that tune on Plectrums, 19 and 17 fret tenors ! You remind me alot of New Years day and the String Bands ! Im thinking of getting a banjo. I don't know whether I want a Plectrum or a Bluegrass ? I currently play bass and guitar. Could you give me some advice ?? Your Friend Tom.

I love jass-style plectrum banjo. Reminds me of watching my grandfather play in his Dixieland jazz group in New Orleans when I was a kid. Great performance.
A bit of Eddie Peabody and a whole lot of Sean Moyses. Absolutely wonderful! A great banjo show piece and I loved the little "harmonics interlude". Banjo On my friend!
It is true, that tie is awful, and perhaps this is why he plays so amazingly, to keep you focused on the music! I do play 5-st Bluegrass banjo, but listening to Sean I discovered a whole new universe. Bravo!
I have tried a number of times to give this a five star rating but the fifth star is not posted by Youtube. Having played banjo plectrum know this is not child's play. Here goes another try. Neil Ostberg
What ignorant swine have not given this 5 stars? Obviously people who have no ear for the music or who have never picked up an instrument and made some sort of attempt to make a sound with it.
As ever well done Sean. It really is a joy to watch and hopefully I'll do it in real life soon.
Very good indeed sir. I liked that bit of prokovief you threw in the middle there- to be able to do things like that (and at that speed!) is simply awe inspiring...
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some 1920's trading cards of musical instruments, including the banjo.
my dad was an accomplished tenor banjo player but always wished he would had a plectrum instead. He died a few years ago. thanks for giving me a great intro what he longed to have. Someday I hope to get his old blond Paramount fixed up for history's sake. great job playing! thanks again
Top notch picking! Anybody post Fred Van Eps' recording of "Nola" on YT yet? Buddy Wachter is the U.S. master of this style.

D,G,B, D...like the late great Ken Harvey did...plectrum G tuning.

I've played tenor for years but now I'm looking for a plectrum. Sean, you've inspired this old man to try something new. God bless andthank you!

Please post more videos because you are awesome. Do you play tenor too or just plectrum?
DrWangMagicalSecret 3 years ago
I play plectrum - but can play a bit of tenor since i learned mandolin which is also tuned in fifths.
seanmoyses 3 years ago
@DrWangMagicalSecret
Bit of tenor since I am also a mandolinist. I have a video on youtube of me attempting to play Tiger Rag but I'd not admit to playing tenor really!

The only reason I can see for giving this less than five stars is that his tie doesn't go well with the suit. The banjo playing is worth six stars.

By plectrum banjo, do you mean a jazz tuned 4 string banjo? instead of the GDAE tenor tuning.
girlsngear 4 years ago
Plectrum banjo has 22 frets and is tuned CGBD. Tenor banjo has 17 or 19 frets and is tuned in fifths.
seanmoyses 4 years ago
Thanks. Have you heard Jerry O'Connor? Btw nice harmonics.
