  • What's the name of that song???

  • @Marco0618 I don't know the name of the sucky song. Whatever song I had chosen for this video had some "copyright infringment" & YouTube was going to ban me, at that time, years ago, we had a SLIM choice of songs, and YouTube had put THIS soundtrack on it. It was either let YouTube put music on it, or take the video down. I chose to let them put the crappy soundtrack on it rather than risk getting bumped or having them remove the video. I don't have the files any longer, they only live here. :(

  • The pink fish in the beginning of video is a red zebra?

  • @SirianKings

    No, female Labeotropheus trewavasae

  • Oh gawd, not this song again. D:

  • @BlueBerryWizard

Yeah, thanks to YouTube and Copyright crap I get stuck using there crap or purchasing (as I have done in other videos) Royalty free (crap)

    :(

  • oddly placid for a Malawi tank, but gorgeous nonetheless.

  • @twasbrillig33

Overstock, frequent water changes, and LOTs of girls for the guys ;)

  • U had either ick or velvet in this aquarium. Saw your cichlids scratching.

  • @DgosFinnest

Nope, they do it after water changes occasionally

No problems at all, fish are clean

  • Really upset today. Bought a 1" green puffer and put him in with my cichlids. I have a 5" beautiful Jack Dempsey that tried to eat him, then spit him out. 2 minutes later, the Jack is dead! Was it because of the Pufffer??

  • @professorxox

YES!! Puffers are a species only fish. Those little shits will wipe out any other fish in the tank with them! Lol. Sorry about the Jack!

  • @professorxox yep. Puffers also have toxins in there bodies if im not mistaken.

  • i would like to know what kind of rock that is also, awesome tank by the way your the first, everybody else theres something i dont like about their tank

  • @22Marquis22

    Thank you !!!

It took a long time for me to settle on which fish I wanted. THEN, I designed the tank before I got the fish.

That is lace rock, this tank has more updates if you go to my channel. THANKS for commenting :)

  • Also, what kind of rock is that? Looks kinda like Lace Rock. Am I right?

  • @wimpyshrub YEP, lace rock :)

  • Is that Black Tahitian Moon Sand?

  • @wimpyshrub No, substrate is black s-grade 3M colorquartz

  • awesome setup brotha...what kind of stones are those/where can i find them??

  • @MasterB8er25 I am a female...However, those are lace rocks and can be purchased by feller stone company

  • hey what kind or gravel do you have? where did you get it?

  • @TheGraffContest That is black s-grade 3M colorquartz. I bought it from a construction company that installs custom made pools.

  • hey there...how do you get so many views....don`t get me wrong, you have very nice fish and tanks, but I can`t seem to get many viewers on mine...any tricks?

  • great tank but the music is garbage

  • @MasterB8er25 WITH A NAME LIKE YOURS who is listening to ya....you dont know garbage..huh

  • @fishslair HAHAHAHA, I just read his name LOL

Maybe he just works on a fishing boat and we are jumping to conclusions ;)

  • @fishslair I Do Now, nice to meet you MUFF GA'BAGE!!...

  • @MasterB8er25 Yep, totally agree

  • This music is horrible I can hardly believe you guys like this. Most overused piece of crap on youtube ever.

  • @BlueBerryWizard YouTube replaced my music, this is not the original music. It was before the "copyright infringment" days and they gave you a very NARROW range of music (like four songs) you HAD to pick or remove your video entirely from YouTube.

I hate it too if that helps, even though I could look into changing it, but If I take it down I'd have to delete it from YouTube, edit it, and put it up like a new video, and it is not new, it is 4 years old. It is overused, agreed. and it sucks.

  • what kind of cichlid is the blue ones

  • Hard to say since all the males of various species in this tank are all blue.

  • @J22R22 The purply bluish with yellow fins are Pseudotropheus acei, and the blue with an orangy topfin and droopy lips are Labeotropheus trewavasae males, and the smaller blue fish with midnight bluish/black bars are Pseudotropheus demasoni

    Was that a trick question? :P ;)

  • What a lovely setup you own

  • Thank you Johnnyboy :)

  • hey check my Malawi tank out

  • I most certainly will :)

  • is the fluval still holding up?

  • Holding up very well. I love that filter :)

Going on four years now, not a part replaced :) Not even an impeller!

  • what type of gravel is that? ANd what type of filter do you use for your 90 gallon??

  • That is 3M colorquartz black s-grade.

I have four filtration units, This tank has a built in overflow with a wet dry filter with a large sump designed for 125 gallon tanks, which I've attached a 25 micron pond canister on the return line, (powered by a mag drive 1200) AND

    a fluval 404, and an emperor 400.

  • Gosh I love your tank--good job! Also, can you please tell me the name of this instrumental.

    Thanks. :)

  • This is called dreamscape, from YouTube

I used to have Will Smith's song SWITCH on here, but apparently that was against the rules and YouTube made me change it.

I liked the other music better :(

Glad you like the tank though

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I appreciate it :)

  • sorry forgot to ask one last thing.. my malawis are onlt 3 cm and i cant even see them three quarters of the time with feeding twice a day how quickly will threy grow to be like yours?

  • Very fast. These fish grow to adult size easily by their first year. The slower growing mbuna are the acei, or some larger species. Yours should be adult size by one year, and probably breeding. Watch the water temp, you don't want too warm, rapid growth will happen with warmer temps, but it is NOT healthy for them. Slow steady growth is better for them in the long run. Good luck, and thanks for stopping by. These are awesome and frequently overlooked fish in the hobby.

  • hi i have a 260l malawi aq and have added just 9 so far, 3 hongi, 3 afra and 3 yellow labs. i wanted to add demonsoni after watchign your vids but i have been told you loose alot to aggresion..i dont wnt that.... is it true that u either add 1 alone or 4 pairs?

  • hi i have got one male and one female demonsoni in my 440ltr tank and they are not at all aggressive, spending most of their time in my Coral stone, Lovely beautiful fish!

  • mbuna (like the demasoni) are NOT pairing fish. with demasoni, you need one or a dozen. Nothing in between.

It is best to have a group of females for every male. I have about 30-40 demasoni in my tank, and they breed like jackrabbits. I always have demasoni fry!

  • yea im also planning on starting a new mbuna cichlid tank. so far i have two jewels, two kenyi and one firemouth. They are about 2-3 inches each in a 55 gallon tank, any advice on what fish i can use? and how long does it take for them to grow big?/

  • Cichlids grow faster I think than other fish :)

Your guys should be good size in no time, most often a few months.

Do your fish get along? Kenyi, as a rule, are NOT pairing fish. If you want to keep them, you should have a male per every 3-4 females (they are harem fish, they don't pair off)

Good luck :) Add more mbuna ;)

  • yea i have 6 mbunas, 1 kenyi, 1 firemouth, 2 jewels, and a flowehorn. They all get along just fine! =) despite what people say they are not really aggressive to each other. they only fight for food and thats it lol. but they are still little. the biggest is 3 1/2 inches wich is the flowerhorn. i had my mbunas for 2 weeks. how long does it take them to grow there biggest? they are all at least 2 1/2 inches to 3.

  • Hello mexicosfinest :)

Mine were about as big as they were going to get by about a year old.

You have quite a bunch of fish there!

I'm a fan of the flowerhorn, they are beautiful. Good idea for my next tank LOL

    :)

  • yupp me too! i love flowerhorns and cant believe i got one lol. but the best thing about it is seeing it get bigger and growing its bump on its head. right now it doesnt have its big bump. only a tiny little budge is starting to form on its head lol i gues im going to have to upgrade soon because they are still young. yea they are nice fish and kind of peacefull if kept in the right conditions. you should get one and upload the video to see how they get along if you do get one =).

  • hi could i add pictus catfish and clown loaches to my malawi tank?

  • I wouldn't advise it. They require a lower pH than the malawi fish. I've seen it done though, but I don't think it is a good idea.

  • i wouldnt add clown loaches unless you're planning on using it as feeder fish.

  • Can you tell me some good species to start keeping?

I only have L.Caereleus so far, I want Mbuna only and have some experience with South American cichlids and various community fish.

  • How big is your tank?

Labs can go with just about anything :)

I also like a lot of the cynotilapia species. They are becomming more popular.

  • the black sand looks cool to me brings the fish color out more nice job check mine out if u get a chance

  • I will try to check out your vids when I get a chance. Don't give up on me, I'll get there, I'm just a bit behind on tubing.

Thanks for the comment on my black sand, it is 3M colorquartz black s-grade. It comes in almost every color you can imagine.

  • your tank is beautiful. Fake lace rock or not it looks stunning! I posted a video reply of my 75 gallon Mbuna tank and my 25 Gallon Cynotilapia Afra Cobue Albino tank. Let me know what you think!

  • I will try to get to your vids in the future, promise!

I'm just backed up a bit catching up with tube stuff, I've been away for awhile.

Anyway, this tank has been updated, all the rocks in my tank are now real :)

Thanks for stopping by, comments are appreciated :)

  • Thank you :)

  • Thanks :)

But as rare as it is in the aquarium hobby, I'm a female ;)

But thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the comment.

    THANKS AGAIN :)

  • Thank you

    And YES

That is black s-grade 3M colorquartz

    :)

  • nice luvbeags i like all ur tanks that i've seen

  • Thank you, I appreciate that :)

  • where you get thet stone looking thing

  • The rock/stone thing with three holes came from petsmart. I no longer have them in this tank. They were neat, they had a space to add bubbles if you want.

A lot of this old footage shows some of the fake lace (resin) rocks I was using with real lace rock. They have all been replaced with lace and moon rock, so this tank looks a bit different now :)

  • That is Labidochromis caeruleus (Nkhata Bay)

Sometimes known as the "blue lab" or more commonly "white lab"

They are the ORIGINAL labidichromis found in Lake Malawi. They are a color morph of the common "yellow lab"

These are relatively rare in the trade.

I've seen some adult specimens of this particular strain go for $60 each. So, if you have one, I'd hold on to it :)

I got rid of mine because although they were beautiful, they were too docile for my tank. The yellows are more boisterous.

  • I had one Electric blue I called Blue Man Group..

    He was a mean one!

  • Never had an electric blue :)

Luckily most of mine get along pretty well.

  • is there a difference between tlc and stress zyme?

  • iyizzle, I do not know, I don't use either of those products. Sorry!

  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

  • what kind of rock is that?

and where may it be purchased?

  • Most of that is lace rock, from feller stone company. I bought several boxes from my local fish store, they ordered it for me. I don't believe you can buy it direct from the company, but their site does have a button for "where to buy"

It is double u double u double u you know what fellerstone you know what com

YouTube won't allow me to post websites SORRY but it is easy to find if you even just google it, you will find their main homepage :)

The other is moon rock, but it is NASTY, crumbly

  • wow awsome fish love the electric blue cichlids

  • Thank You. I'm not familiar with electric blues, but I'm guessing I have them?

This tank has been renovated. Lots of the same fish, but I changed up my aquascaping. If you want, check it out. If not, thanks again for commenting on this video. Comments are always appreciated

  • nice tank and fish.. check mine out

  • I did, I like your aquascaping, very attractive :)

Thanks for the comment, always appreciated.

  • The "sand" is 3M colorquartz, black s-grade

  • great tank.

    i got 7 mbunas,2 blood parrots,3 black and 1 white convict,1 paroon shark,1 tiretrack eel

  • Jeepers, your tank must be huge. Had an eel once, by the next day he had pretty much eaten every living thing in the tank.

    Thanks for stopping by. :)

  • by tank isnt huge.the eel is still a baby, but the paroon shark is 35cm.actually the tank is only 67litres, because i dont have the place to put a bigger tank.but my fish will get a bigger tank as a new years pressent

  • my*

  • Nice Tank, but the music dont fit.

  • The music doesn't fit.

This was the first video of my fish created almost two years ago.

  • I've found for some strange reason that Africans look best with dark caves on light colored crushed coral.. it looks cool but you really lose your blues with color of your setup right now. I'm so gonna be posting my video of my Africans soon :)

  • I'm going to probably be removing this video soon. It is very old and this tank no longer has black sand. This tank was redone In august and no longer looks this way.

My fault, I need to get these old videos down.

  • loose the music get some dire straits!!

  • Yes, probably the whole world should change their soundtrack to Dire Straits. What a wonderful diverse community we would have then. I vote everyone should lose their soundtracks and get some Dire Straits.

  • I like your sense of humour!! I have 2 tanks of Tanganykans Lamprologus brichardi 1 six foot and 1 3 foot which is realy a quarantine tank.

I was that busy going on about dire straits I forgot to mention how nice your tank was I have 4 tanks altogether the biggest being a 8x2x2. When I get a camcorder I will post a video. by the way love your irony, especially in your vlog!!

  • LOL

It is much better to laugh with someone than at them ;)

Yes, you must get some video up, it is rare to see Tanganykans. They are wonderful fish, but with my water parameters, the highest pH I will probably ever obtain (and maintain) is 7.6, way too low for Tanganykans.

My husband has NEVER seen this entire video as he can NOT STAND this song.

I tell him just hit mute, but he knows the soundtrack is STILL THERE.

I like a very diverse range of music, perhaps check out my other vids.

  • Yeah, they shouldn't get that large. I was a novice African Cichlid keeper when I got these guys and I overfed them. As a result, many got way way way TOO BIG. I had to trade some in at the pet store. :(

I know now NOT to overfeed ;)

  • would i be able to have like one peacock cichlid in there. i like peacock cichlids. sorry about all the questions

  • Peacocks are very tempermental. IF they are stressed even a little bit, they will not show off their colors. If you are going to put them in the two foot tank, it will be too small, and they will be plain silver/white fish (from stress)

And, peacocks can get pretty large, and they are finicky eaters. If you put them with bold aggressive fish, they may not get enough to eat. Also, if you have different peacocks, they may interbreed, and crossbred peacocks are worthless (and usually very UGLY)

  • I wouldn't try to put a peacock in there. I don't think one by themselves would be very happy (they like to be kept in groups, a male to three or four females)

I would think one by itself would be very lonely, would stress, and wouldn't show its best colors.

  • its the video, 55 gallon fishtank

  • ive got what i think is limestone in the water (it was sold as white rock so i dno). ive got a vid of it on my account thingo. click on my name and the vid should be there.

  • Hummm. I'm not sure from the video what kind of rock that is.

To buffer the water you will need a lot more, if it is a buffering type rock. A good test (but not 100% foolproof) is to take the rock out, let it dry, and drip a few drips of vinegar on it. If it fizzes, it is a good buffering rock. (but make sure you rinse the vinegar off WELL before placing back.

  • and could i get any julies aswell. Damn malawi's got all the colourful fish

  • Actually I think Victoria Basin Cichlids are the most colorful.

The only reason Malawi Cichlids get more attention is because they are more readily available to the public.

My next tank will probably be Victoria Basin Cichlids. But, they do require a larger tank, even larger than my four foot long tank. (GRUMPY).

And, they lose color if they are stressed.

No sense in getting colorful fish if they will be stressed and have no color anyway.

  • the ph is only about 7.6 but i put some ph up in it and how many shell dwellers could i get?

  • It is recommended to keep three of them. Hopefully you will luck out and a pair will form.

  • pH up will not work to keep your water stable.

You will need to buffer the water with crushed coral, limestone, and/or a good buffering solution. Buffers protect your water from having flutuations in your pH.

Check out Seachem products. They make a Malawi/victoria buffer to keep your pH stable.

  • Tanganyika Shell Dwellers are a good option.

Stay away from Lake Malawi fish. A two foot tank with Malawi Cichlids will be murder.

The Tanganyikan need much higher pH, you might have to check your pH, they like hard water with a pH of 8.6

They are interesting fish, and VERY fun to watch. Provide them with lots of shells, and watch them set up and make camp (home) in shells. Great fish :)

  • hey, i have a 2 foot fishtank i am setting up for africans. what fish would fit in there without bashing any others? thanks

  • Very nice, am I in the process of setting up my 90 gallon Mbuna tank. Are those little Demasoni I see? Not sure if you said this ahead of time but what species are all in there? Just curious...

  • Yes, those are Pseudotropheus demasoni.

This tank has changed a lot, if you see my channel and fish videos you can see my tank updates I just did last month. And, I got rid of the Labeotropheus trewavasae, they just got too big and grumpy for a 90 gallon. I went with white top hara, and I'm enjoying them a lot more. :) The harmony in the tank is much better after getting rid of the trewavasae. I'd get them again, if I had a longer tank, maybe like a six foot long tank.

  • Hey I love the black sand, I have been wanting to get black sand for my cichlid tank for a while now but I cant seem to find any at a fair price. Any idea as to where I can find some?

  • That isn't really sand, although it looks like sand. It is a product made by the 3M company, called colorquartz. This is the black S grade. I got mine from Brodsky & Associates years ago. i don't know if they still sell it, but you can try.

    812 West Patapsco Avenue

    Suite M

    Baltimore, MD 21230

    410-303-7100

But be prepared, you must buy it in bulk (it is usually sold to professional contractors only) and shipping is very pricey. BUT, this company was wonderful to work with.

  • Thanks for the info!

  • Thank you!

Yes, I've added even more rock since this footage was taken. They love their rocks.

  • the song really sucks. but dig the fish . all soon be set up then you all can check out mine

  • I can't help it. I'm a Will Smith Fan :)

  • its good

  • Thank You

    :)

  • No, there are mineral salts but NOT salt in Lake Malawi.

  • this vid is whack

  • Is whack good or bad.

If it good then thank you.

If is is bad, then get the F off my channel

  • Love the tank! Great assortment. Also like the way you have the center built up, and the sides open.

  • Thank you. One of my fellow cichlid fans Khaki91, has his tanks built up on the ends with the middle open. That looks awesome as well.

  • SWITCH!!!!!!!!!

  • No, Lake Malawi has no brackish sections, there is no connection to the ocean at all.

The water is hard due to dissolved minerals, not from dissolved sodium chloride.

  • Actually, the water is Lake Malawi is pretty amazing. It has a high pH and it could be considered "hard" but not as high in GH as most people think. Usually 4-6 degrees of hardness. That really isn't that high, considering the pH is high from 7.4-8.8

    Very interesting ecosystem!

  • hey how many fish per gallon i have a twenty gallon beginner african keeper i have 12 rite now

  • 55 gallons is the minimum size for africans.

It depends on which species you have, as to how many you can put in there. A 20 gallon won't be much good after about a year or two, you will only have one fish (the winner) Which is kind of unfair to the fish, as african cichlid commonly live for 5-10 years, I've even met someone who had a 13 year old labidochromis caeruleus.

There are many south american cichlids that would do much better in a 20 gallon, like bolivian or german rams.

  • yoo nice tankkk

  • beautiful tank!!

  • Thank you. These fish are my babies :)

I love to pamper them. :)

I need to post new video, I got rid of some of my species and replaced them with others. But overall, I think the tank now looks even better. New video coming :) Thank you again for the comment. I appreciate all comments :)

  • I replied earlier, but it didn't post!

Anyway, it depends on what cichlids you have. Most are territorial, and it doesn't matter how much the tank holds, more often it depends on how long the tank is. I have a 30 inch long tank that houses four bolivian rams (South American cichlids) and for the most part, most Lake Malawi fish require a tank that is at least four foot long. My 90 gallon is actually small for most lake Malawi cichlids.

  • personally i dont much care for african chiclids no real reason i just dont like them but u have a very nice tank with some happy looking fish also i was wondering becuse i keep need ing money to support myself how much do u usally get for ur fishes babys?

  • I get nothing. I do not sell them.

I DO get store credit. So, my hobby basically supports itself. I get my filters, filter supplies, pumps, lights, anything I need.

I do not sell them because I like the fish store I deal with AND because dealing with people is a pain. So, for me, trading my fry for credit at the store is perfect.

  • I do need to add I don't think I could ever make money off my fish.

Because this past year I purchased another tank...AND not with store credit ;)

So, I'm a fishaholic. I'm addicted. They will always COST me more than what I could make off them anyway.

AND, I just bought 24 more fish...So no, I expect this will always be a hobby for me, I can't make more money than what I want to spend on new fish, tanks, etc.

  • i do know i am going to need to upgrade adventually. Hes still alittle guy. Once he gets bigg then ill have to go and get a tank.maybe in a few months :) beside me 3 red jewels all my other fish are mbunas. they're from 1.5 inches to 3 inches. little guys still. but my tanks not overcrowded and my water is perfect .

  • very nice tank. how long did it take your fish to get that big?

  • ONLY One year!!! :)

they are all two years old now, I 've got to get new video up :)

  • WOW . Ive had my 55 gallon running since end of July 2007, my Tilapia buttikoferi when i bought him was about 2 inch. smallest in LFS and is now about 5in and largest in my tank. most aggressive as well.

  • Time to get a bigger tank! Tilapia buttikoferi requires a minimum 125 gallons.

I don't need to much incentive to buy a new tank, but If I had a bruiser like a buttikoferi I'd be tank shopping :)

  • speckles, my mbuna won't get any larger.

6-7 inches long is their max usually. ;)

That is why my 90 gallon is good for them, they won't outgrow it.

  • cool tank, check out mine

  • great fishtank! I tried keeping these same fish but they all killed each other. Had 5 blues, 5 oranges, 5 yellows in a 20gal tank. They were all small of course! Any tips to prevent murder?

  • These fish require a tank that is long. They have territories and they like to defend them. I'd recommend a fish tank that is a minimum of four foot long. A six foot long tank is even better. My tank is 90 gallons, and I have about 30-40 fish in there. the trick with mbuna is a large tank, lots of rocks, and overstock. ;)

  • You have definitely succeeded in making them happy! And good looking. Do they spawn in your tank? I don't think I'll try again with these fish for a looong time--it's too sad to watch them pick each other off one by one... :(

  • They have babies like crazy. I take them to the local fish store for credit. That way, my hobby supports itself. Well, kind of... Till I see a new tank I want! ;)

  • NICE FISH.... LOVE YOUR SET UP !!!

  • Thank you :)

  • nice tank, I just set up my african cichlid tank, right now i have 1 african cichlid in 4 S.A. cichlids, Im trying to get my pet store to gimme some store credit to buy africans. They arent budging. Tell me what you think of my setup! thanks!

  • Your tank looks very nice. What size is it?

It should be a minimum of four foot long for africans. They get grumpy and kill each other.

I LOVE your oscar. We are planning on a 300 gallon in the future. I want oscars, BIG ones :)

  • intrested in selling any frys im willing to buy loll

  • I don't think they would survive the trip.

I don't get cash for them, I turn them into the pet store they give me store credit, which I turn around and use on more supplies. That way, my hobby supports itself ;)

Thanks for commenting on the video though. These guys have tons of babies.

Not frys *fries* lol, we get those at McDonalds. ;) Do you have cichlids also?

  • I think fry is plural.

  • Fry is plural. That was actually my point... ;)

  • nice tank and set up.

    what you think of mine?

  • I LOVE it. Beautiful :)

If you post it as a video response to any of mine I will post it :)

Your fish and tank look GREAT :) :) :)

  • what is the species of the lemon lime colored ones?

  • The bright yellow ones with some black fins are Labidochromis caeruleus, sometimes called "yellow labs"

And the peachy/orange fish with black blotches on them are female Labeotropheus trewavasae. :)

Lemon lime... LOVE it. Fruity fish. LOL

    Thanks for the comments :) :) :)

  • nice, what kind of filter do you have on there.

  • I have a wet dry designed for 225 gallon tanks, even though mine is only a 90 gallon tank. On my return line I also have a Nu-Clear 25 micron canister (people sometimes use them for small ponds) AND I also have a fluval 404.

I power my wet/dry return with a mag drive 1200.

I have a lot of filtration, in case I have a problem or some type of failure with one unit I can have back up and not lose any fish if I have problems. :)

I also figure you can never overfilter.

  • those fish are some sexy ho's man, yeah, oh yeah,

    they're really "in the tank"

    rock the tank- peace out

  • Great tank! Just wish u have a lighter rocks and substrate....so that I can really see those dark blue fish.lol

  • nice tank :]

i think i only have 1 type on mbuna in my tank their 2 zebras :]

  • I've owned zebras before and found that my 90 gallon tank wasn't large enough for them.

I found keeping 5-10 of each species in a very large tank is the only way to keep them from killing each other as adults. :)

The fish I have now are expected to live 10-15 years.

Enjoy your tank! I hope you enjoy your tanks as much as I enjoy mine, as fish have become a great hobby of mine :) VERY RELAXING :)

  • Nice tank!!

  • Thank you. It looks even better now. I've really got to get some updated pics :)

  • Nice nice healthy tank. Good job

  • Thank you!!! :)
