CGI is an artform, and artists and moviemakers can do whatever they want. he said in interviews he wrote the story a long time ago, but didn't think he could achieve the characters' appearance of giant size and all of the monsters with just puppetry and costumes, so he waited years until CGI was advanced enough that he was satisfied. if you're going to be an asshole, come up with better vocabulary because mumbling "its stupiddddd" makes it look like you are.

I feel that since CGI has become affordable for features, it's opened a floodgate of swirly pixels in horror and fantasy. And when applied correctly, these things work out wonderfully. For instance, one of the earlier examples: Jurassic Park. Worked out well because of the attention it received and how it well it was blended with puppets in rubber suits.

.. Granted, when puppets and rubber suits are used improperly they can look horrible too. But when CGI is total, as in many scenes of Avatar, it looks chinsy and moves all wrong. James Cameron's Avatar looks about as well put together as an evening on the World of Warcraft.

CGI is a fine tool and should be applied with a light brush, otherwise you end up with Spiderman 3. The human brain can recognise what's real, CGI's come a long way, but when used like this it still registers as Nintendo

The reason they make CG of the actors and actresses is because they can do it and still make it look real dumb ass. Also in this particular case, it's because they have to use CG for the natives of Pandora and they just wouldn't be able to make the quick fluid motions required of bi-pedal 10 foot tall aliens with puppets, not to mention puppets don't look real and when CG is done properly, it can as long as the proper physics are taken into account.

John Carpenter, Jim Henson Ridley Scott and, yes, even James Cameron have used puppet aliens/monsters, and to great success, too. Funny how their films (like The Thing, Aliens, Terminator, etc) have truly outlasted the assembly-line of films containing CG... but then again, you're probably 15 and enjoy films that look like video games.
