Hey i'm with you. I own a gaming PC and don't like consoles much. I feel that they hinder the gaming market by forcing everyone to buy proprietary hardware and force game devs to limit their creativity.
I personally think the world would be a better place without consoles. They're simply a money grubbing revenue vampire for Corporations.
I.E that one guy has his slim on top of another xbox. And his powerbox on top of his xbox. I keep mine in a nice setup, on top of the desk my TV is on, the wire is threaded through a hole into the main entertainment to a cool area for the powerbox, it then runs back out to the outplug. I've had an old-style xbox for about 4 years without a single problem, and a slim xbox for 1 year with no problems. You just need to not abuse the console itself.
The bottom failbox wasnt even plugged in or turned on, so obviously that had nothing to do with it.
I agree that you should take care of your hardware and this is especially true for me since I game on PC primarily and only on console for the exclusive titles, but it's not like these people went out of their way to setup the failbox for errors.
Hell I used my nintendo, genesis, and playstation all on the floor while i was growing up with no problems AT ALL.
Well my personal belief is that anything that is made by human hands, has at least a 25% chance of failure during it's normal lifespan.
Obviously though that isn't true for everything. In the failboxes case, the evidence is so insurmountably undeniable, it's hard to suggest that other competitors hardware could and will fail at the same rate.

The xbox was made way ahead of its time in order to be one step ahead of sony. They rushed the 360 out to the market a year ahead of the PS3 they can build up revenue. Yes there was a 50%- 75% failure rate but that's from people over playing it & thinking it would be unbreakable. It was the first next gen console, of course it was going to run into problems. Now these new 360 s models should not break down & if it does, then it was either mishandled or it was purposely done so it can look bad.

Some ppl don't have their xbox's fry until several years later. A number of factors go in to when and if a xbox will fry.
One of those factors is luck.
