"Ron Paul is a Libertarian." LIAR. Ron Paul is a true Republican, not a RINO (Republican in Name Only), or the worst kind - a conservative unwilling to claim his party. Everything you said we need in the next breath, Ron Paul has been screaming for. You're saying they lost it? He's been there the whole time.
Ron Paul is a nut because he's a racist d-bag who adheres to the worst economic policy in the history of humanity. Libertarian-type policies are what caused the global financial meltdown, but he doesn't care what happens to normal folks as long as we protect the Free Market!
He loves it like the cliche hippie loves trees, as if the Free Market is some wonderful spirit that is being threatened by evil disney villains who hate capital.
@borbo23 Are you kidding me? What we have now isn't even close to a free market. The financial crises in this country stem from the activities of "regulators". The regulators failed - they let abuse go on right under their noses - what's the point of propping them up anymore?
I despise big businesses too, but it's due to government intervention on their behalf that they have been allowed to continue duping the public for far too long. Ron Paul does NOT support their activities WHATSOEVER.
@KruspeFTW We don't have a "free market" because without regulation it's disastrous. It's how we get famines that kill millions, massive economic collapse - just like what happened recently.
This latest recent economic collapse was because of de-regulation that's been progressively getting worse and worse.
We need MORE regulation to protect us from the market; less ALWAYS causes disaster, and then the libertarians cover their failure by claiming it "wasn't free enough".
@borbo23 lol no the latest economic collapse was not because of deregulation. It was no where near deregulation, it was a perfect example of how too much regulation messed things up.
@qwertyopo1234 Complete nonsense, and typical libertarian lies. The market collapsed because banks were trading on imaginary money - because it was "profitable" on paper. Had it been regulated as it should have been, this would not have happened.
But by all means, tell me your alternate-history version that suits the libertarian fantasy. It was the fault of poor inner-city people who mainly pay in cash, right?
@borbo23 "The current structure of capital ownership and organization of production in our so-called "market" economy, reflects coercive state intervention prior to and extraneous to the market. From the outset of the industrial revolution, what is nostalgically called "laissez-faire" was in fact a system of continuing state intervention to subsidize accumulation, guarantee privilege, and maintain work discipline"
Markets have never been free and never will be as long as there is a government around to ensure inequality. More regulators will not fix the problem.
@KruspeFTW More regulators will not solve the problems inherent to capitalism, this is certain, but less will only spell far more suffering. The historical trend has always been towards more regulation, and for good reason.
The market has never, ever shown an ability to regulate itself; not on arsenic, not on weapons, not on trans-fats, not ever. The "invisible hand of the market" did not end slavery, or create worker's rights, or help get rid of diseases such as smallpox or land men on the--
@borbo23 You have things exactly backward. All power that is wielded by corporate interests and employers is exercised WITH the help of government; regulations do not prevent corporate tyranny, they merely enforce it.
Regulatory agencies cannot go out of business if they do a bad job safeguarding people; private oversight and regulatory companies would have an incentive to function properly.
@KruspeFTW While you may be correct that food quality has improved in the last 100 years or so, problems still crop up and sicken or even kill a lot of people. And more people feel the brunt of safety failures because only a few large companies control the distribution of most food as a result of centralization, which occurs because these companies have access to enough resources to influence these regulators. The FDA, for example, is full of executives from high-powered food companies.
@KruspeFTW And even then, quality improvement did not necessarily come about as a result of regulation. The horror stories of people finding chopped-up fingers in their meats were largely overblown and just provided government with an excuse to grab even more power. Regulators require costly procedures that drive small producers out of the market without necessarily improving the quality of food.
BTW, thank you for the spirited debate on this topic.
@KruspeFTW I do agree with the downsides you say; many aspects of the government just work as pawns of those with money.
However, regulation via a governing body is still the only way that these things CAN be regulated, because the market is completely unable to regulate itself. The desire for rrofit will drive things forward even if they are highly destructive or dangerous.
The problems you list really speak of the deeper flaws of capitalism itself.
@Knocks4U Every time we there's no regulation the market crashes and millions suffer - but the cry is always "less regulation!"
Doing the same thing and expecting different results is one of the signs of insanity . . . kind of funny you should doubt the sanity of someone else who is calling for something completely rational and sane and has undoubtedly been a stabilizing factor in capitalism.
@Knocks4U One must also wonder why there has always been some regulation; the market is completely unable to regulate itself. We must be protected from the relentless pursuit of profit. An excellent case in point is arsenic, which was unregulated in the first third of the 19th century, but by mid-century was regulated in nearly every country. Even the most ardent free-market believer agreed with this move, because the lack of regulation was costing lives.
@Knocks4U Your inability to make an actual argument says a lot about the libertarian ideology - every time they try to make an actual argument they back themselves into a corner.
In reality, freer markets mean massive inequality, often massive famines that cost millions of lives, and incredible instability. Of course, libertarians argue we haven't actually had a "free" market (for good reason), but that brings up another huge problem; they ask everyone, on their word, to risk the economy on

Out of power they pushed the ruling Liberals to balance the budget (yup, we also have a Liberal party) Once these conservatives got into power, they promptly spent Canada back into a deficit .
