Has anyone ever died as a result of being hit by a RC airplane? I think it's only a matter of time until someone does. I noticed people walking along that road after the crash. Was the road closed during the display?
@handsfan : In the last 25 years I personally only know of 2 people that have been killed by an RC plane in the UK, one at an organised event and one in a public park (unsure if the person should have been flying there or not). This is why we are regulated by the BMFA & CAA (we also have to be insured, just like car drivers). I don't know the details of this event, so can't comment specifically. I personally wouldn't fly any aircraft over where people or property are (same as a military airshow)
@FrostbiteUK Thanks for your reply and the information. I was just curious. I pretty much have a live and let live attitude and don't like to hear about 'over regulation' in sports and hobbies but, on the other hand, I sure wouldn't want to be hit by one of those things!
@aliander8 : I don't know, you could see in the video it was pulled from the wreckage. Personally I would have sent it away for a full test and service after that.
You do need to firstly belong to BMFA or some body which covers insurance, BMFA is £10 million liability, since this was a organised event anyone using the footpath would have been in controlled area, these aircraft fall under control of CAA and need to meet certain requirements in certain weight classes, model flyers do not crash on purpose, more chumps fly real a/c and drive cars, this is a regulated activity and flying in this case was clear of spectators as are most meetings
If you need a licence for these overpowered rc's (i think you should need one) this guy should have his revoked. Its ended up crossing a public footpath, someone 'll get badly hurt one day if we let chumps play with the bigger toys.
I feel sorry for the owner of that plane. not only did it look awesome. it sounded amazing. till he (or the pilot) crashed it. it must of taken him a long time to put something like that together in the shed. its a complete write off. If i was the owner and i let someone else fly it and he crashed it like that. Id be after his blood. but of course accidents happen. and some are a bitter pill to swallow
@eclipser2004 Servo failure or low voltage failure cousing rx reboot, but that does tie into yours high amp draw...but in the first part of the video you can see his bus board, looks like there was more than enough power. Hell my smaller J-10b delta lost all control and it took me two weeks to fin. figure it out. I knew I still had atleast 2 min reserve. I went into a heavy bank at 120mph thought I shut the thrust vector off, nope. Dropped volt on all 4 rx. virt. stab was all that was left
@eclipser2004 you said flutter....went back and watched again and yes his wing tips had very very mild flutter almost right after lifting off and gaining speed.
My grandfather does this hobby, you can get insurance (i think its a legal requirement due to the real posibility of hurting someone, damaging property etc) so atleast your investment into such an expencive kit is protected to some degree
I have a scale spitfire for instance that I will only take out on the calmest and quietest days down at our field.
I woudl genuinly be heartbroken if I totally destroyed it, as I scratch built it with the man who introduced me to RC flying, who is dead now, and I spent nearly as much time getting the details right, as building it on the jig!
Anyway, bad luck, was it as windy as it sounds on the camera mic?
PS Its also a good excuse to build another : D I like building as much as flying tho : p
Well Ive lost some very nice models, not jets, but I do still have an addiction to the little stroker engines, and dislike electric. So when I lose a plane, often a reasonably expensive motor is destroyed along with it.
The thing is, Ive never shed a tear, or been particularly angry about it (not had a mid-air or a collision at all with a 'noob' or whatever yet), since I consider it all part of the game. We would not fly nice models, if we werent willing to lose them in crashes.
if I had a wreak like that I would want it to burst into a huge fireball of flames and smoke. All hes got now is scrap and firewood. Feel for you dude.
Classic case of "Oh my 'jet powered' model can cope with the higher winds lol" Real shame, and yes, very lucky it didn't hit anyone, that would kill someone easily
@basimpsn : I can only report what I was told about the elevator failure. I do not know how the elevons and canards were configured although I would personally have thought it was a lock-out that caused it.
Looks like another lockout, I will never go to 2.4, why does everyone claim this is the best thing since sliced bread? My 72mhz has NEVER locked me out.
