I went to work at LAX, for JAL, in April 1971 and called it my home for a decade. I remember that the two southern runways (25L and 25R) could not handle B747 aircraft because of the structural limitations of the Sepulveda overpass.
Mmmm legs 7:56. Those were the days when pilots CARRIED their own bags and didn't roll their stuff around like old ladies. Or carry their gear in leather backpacks lol!
I wonder how the residents who lived close to LAX at that time managed to put up with all the noise generated by the 727s, the BAC 1-11s, the DC-9s,....?? These planes are some of the loudest planes ever to grace th skies.
The BAC 1-11, in particular, was extremely loud upon takeoff. How did the residents living along LAX at that time managed to put up with the noise generated by that little, twin-engine bugger of a plane??
The A330s, MD-80s, A340s,.... were unknown at that time..
@harley55100 They just left they did not like the noise. The residents were not as picky as we are today. We are very picky and complainful generation. Also they Just Put Up with the Noise.
I'm still trying to figure out how LAX handled the international traffic prior to the building on the TBIT. And what took so long to build terminal one? I miss the one level LAX used to be. Great, if you loved airplane watching(not too bad now either).
@djlegman T2 was originally the International Terminal. It had the same corridor and satellite layout as the other terminals, but was renovated from the ground up in the 1980s to it's current form. It used to also be the Northwest terminal, until the NWA/DAL merger moved all operations to Delta's Oasis at Terminal 5. Now it's a secondary international terminal; customs facilities are present and it currently serves Air Canada and Air New Zealand among others.

I don't think the poor guy just trying to get his bag at 0:57 was exactly on board with this whole new expanded LAX airport concept.
