  • I love Bill. He really was an inspiration to me in my teen years, and still continues to be.

Many people say it's sad that most of his material is still relevant (the drug war, Iraq, the military budget, fundamentalist Christians, poverty and overall injustice) as it proves the world really hasn't learnt from its mistakes and made amends. This is true, and Bill would be disgusted. But because of this he is timeless and will continue to inspire many generations after us for a long time. RIP Bill.

  • Everyone needs to seriously calm down. I know Bill made some good social observations. But bashing entire cultures doesn't make the world a better place, it makes it worse. Regardless if he was from the south or not. To me, he just represents a brand of comic that was hip during the 90's. One who told jokes predicated on negativity rather than embracing what was funny in the world. You don't end bleakness by injecting more of it into the world. But I guess I'm doing that myself. Vicious cycle?

  • @alabaster30 better Bill Hicks than Larry The Cable Guy. One pleads with people not to be stupid and the other encourages it. I take the former and you are free to git r dun all you wish.

  • @alabaster30 It doesn't make it worse, it doesn't change anything. It's just an opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • Bill Hicks was a negative, grouchy creep. Always bashing the south, etc.. He died of cancer because he was a negative asshole who sucked down a carton a day. Not sure why he has such a vast following.

  • @alabaster30 bill hicks is from the south, therefore giving him more right to dis people for being rednecks than anyone else, the world is a shitty place full of war, famine and corporate scum which would explain the negativity, and he's not afraid to say things that might be controversial (not just for shock value mind you, but because these are actually his own beliefs) . thats probably why alot of his following deeply respected him. as for why he had such a big following its simple.

  • @alabaster30 they obviously (like myself) found him funny. you clearly don't however, which begs the question: why look up clips of bill hicks on the internet and post comments about how you don't find him funny? surely you have better things to do with your time, no?

  • @alabaster30

So what comedian do you like then?

  • @alabaster30 Clearly a troll guys, move along.

  • @alabaster30 He didn't have a vast following until recently; because America is full of people like yourself. If you were familiar with his act you'd realize he was rather optimistic, but angry because much of the masses fail to realize how fucked up things really are

  • @destroyerofsenses Thank you for telling me what type of person I am. I wouldn't know otherwise.

  • Looks like they edited out the reason it was banned. I think it was a line about fundamentalist christians. Letterman keeps religious stuff off his show, period.

And Bill said that do they really think that when Jesus returns he's going to want to see all those crucifixes? It would be like walking up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pin on your lapel.

  • this guys not funny

  • @Ramble1212

That is because of the heavy, heavy censorship put on him for Letterman.

  • @Ramble1212 I gather Carrot Top is more your speed.

  • @KellyGreen5555 I guess if you don't like Bill Hicks you must like Carrot Top. Clearly. Sheesh.

  • @KellyGreen5555 no just good comedy

  • @gnab 123 wow, I'd love to see your

    stand-up

  • Smokers didn't know when they were done exhaling LOL

  • wow. just not very funny.

  • @gnab123 Not his best stuff. Definitely watered down for TV.

  • Didn't find him funny here.

  • He is great even in a censored environment. :-)

  • @zephranna01 He didnt die from lung cancer there Clairance.

  • he looks like nicholas cage here

  • R.I.P.

  • Comedian has to be a rough career. Traveling all the time, bad gigs, not paid enough ect ect

The bonuses would be hanging in your hotel room till your gig.

  • @ProRanting Some get paid millions..

  • @DrinkSkateSleep A select few. And they usually have to be dumbass talentless pricks like Larry The Cable Guy and Dane Cook. It's like a select few mainstream dumbasses. Occasionally some REAL personalities get out. Carlin and Hicks for example.

  • @ProRanting hanging in shitty hotel rooms would suck terribly.

  • @zephranna01 rofl ok then

  • @zephranna01 lol, uhhuh

  • @zephranna01 mhmm, im sure

  • @zephranna01 what? that has nothing to do with being smart, but i can tell from your spelling you probably wouldn't understand that. do you even know anything about depression?

  • @zephranna01 that has nothing to do with intelligence, it has to do with addiction and depression caused by the state of the world

  • for a while Elvis lived in Pasadena,CA or so I heard and my grandma said once her and her husband at the time went to see him and he gave them a cady, I heard that story since I was a kid and never heard anythin bout it since this vid, humm.. maybe tis true lol

  • Brave of him to the New BIT IN new york.

  • even censored bill hicks is great entertainment

  • one of a kind!

  • Kinison got "The Kit" too

This guy is Kinison without the delivery (I'm not a big Kinison guy, but he got himself over)

  • @toyotas2006 i don't like that kinison guy, he shouts and i found it really quite irritating

  • Chris Rock said when you "Make it", you get "The Kit"

Movie deal, network deal, HBO, Barbara Walters, endorsements, etc.

Hicks never even heard of "The Kit". He though it was urban legend.

  • @toyotas2006 Misunderstood again. You believe a comedian has to go through a set procedure involving popularity and money in order to gain credabilty as a comedian....eeeeek. Stand-up is an art from, so if you don't 'get it' in some cases then thats fine, but looking at a path one of your favourite comedians has taken - and then applying that path as a blueprint of which every comedian must follow is a bit hard for me to understand. Watch Sane Man, honestly im trying to do you good - not bad.

  • @toyotas2006 Bill Hicks never made it because he didn't just entertain, he educated and enlightened. He didn't just tell the truth, he went straight for the jugular vein of the truth that those in power don't want us to know. He never got the "kit" because he was too good, not because he sucked. Obviously dude, Bill is way over your head and just saying something doesn't make it so. Go back to school.

  • @midiman16

He never made it. I told you why.

    You don't like it, tough.

Leave me alone. Go get a friend.

  • @toyotas2006 sure thing

  • @midiman16 I thought it was juggler's vein.

  • This guy is not funny

Maybe he can write a joke

    But can't tell one

You go on Letterman with your best shit

    This is it?

No wonder he went nowhere in the business

  • @toyotas2006 He went places you clearly couldn't possibly understand

  • @tommason1984

    Went on TV and bombed

    Just like everywhere else

    Congrats!

  • @toyotas2006 You must be deaf, or just .. well i don't really want to offend..

  • @tommason1984

    Go ahead!

Be like your idol and offend

Bill Hicks had balls. He would tell an potentially offensive joke, and not care about the reaction.

His delivery sucked. It was too dry, and he couldn't sell his jokes.

That's why he never made it

This was as high as he got, and this appearance blows

    That's all I'm saying

It is VERY CLEAR why he never made it big. You either love him or hate him.

For me, his delivery isn't good enough. Too dark.

  • @toyotas2006 You either love him or .. you're a bit of a cunt. THERE I DID IT HAPPY NOW?!

  • @toyotas2006 by 'dark' do you mean 'takes the piss out of america' rather than wanks it off? Bill Hicks is now probably one of the top 5 most critically acclaimed comedians ever, he didn t get there in his time, probably cuz people like letterman and the industry censored him (like his last appearance on letterman, where he didnt appear). This appearance is pretty lame in terms of what he could do, admittedlym but when he was good, he was best. Check out 'Bill Hicks - Rascals Comedy Club' boom

  • @toyotas2006 You go on Letterman with tamed shit. Bill wasn't tame. He's out of place when placating to studio audiences on chat shows. Too honest and brutal.

For him it was either honesty and virtual anomymity, or dishonesty and as you put it - 'going somewhere in the business'...

    Watch Sane Man.

What does going somewhere in the business, for a comedian, mean?

  • @imnomonkey11

How about a GOOD five minutes on Letterman?

You go on Letterman with your BEST 5 minutes

If this is the best 5 mins he has, he can drop dead

    Oops.

  • @toyotas2006 Don't think you got what i meant, not to worry.

  • @imnomonkey11

Getting on Letterman when he moved to 11:30 (These were when Letterman was still 12:30)

    Getting a movie deal?

    A TV Show?

    HBO Special?

    Vegas?

He missed everything, and for good reason

  • Yay! I love Bill Hicks. Did he die of colon cancer?

  • @spookypunky Pancreatic.

  • ..80's rules !!.. best generation..

  • "why dont you pretend I'm working" rofl, classic

  • classic Bill

  • guy's maudlin. i saw a show where he started crying when the heckling for severe. such a tragic man.

  • In a world where Sarah Palin, Jeff Beck, O'Reilly have center stage, the world sorely needs Bill.

    I miss ya, brother.

Sadly, no longer available for childrens' parties.

  • @grimatongueworm I hope you mean Glenn Beck. Jeff Beck is the amazing, talented, inspirational guitarist, and Glenn Beck is a CUNT!

  • @TheCrowebar123 God, I can't believe I wrote Jeff Beck. Yes..I meant GLENN BECK. the uber cunt racist liar.

  • @grimatongueworm you mean Glenn Beck? i'm pretty sure no one's paying attention to Jeff Beck... and what world do you live in? FOX News has center stage in your life? change the channel!! and also what does FOX News have to do with this comedy?

  • holy shit dude, jonnyyoman is trying to compare himself to bill hicks! he has SIX JOKES on his channel, each one about 40 seconds long. and the two I listened to were not terrible but i didn't even smirk.

that is NOT cool, self-promoting at the expense of someone who would blow you off the stage any day of the week.

  • Bill Hicks has some very funny stuff but lots of it isn't funny at all. If you want to hear a really funny guy, a guy who's mostly all funny, click on jonnnyyoman.

  • he looks nothign like alex jones, douchebag, lamest conspiracy ever.

  • Bill would have gone insane in todays world.

  • @DarkWolfStudio rubbish obama's the president and iraq war is almost over

imagine what he would think of george bush....

  • @DarkWolfStudio But he IS in today's world. Just not as the comedian Bill Hicks. His spirit is in anyone who recognizes his work.

Btw... he has a different energy in this performance than usual. A little more timid, a little less edgy.

Probably has to do with the nerves. Makes sense when you perform to people who didn't come to the show specifically for you.

  • @godvergeten "Probably has to do with the nerves. Makes sense when you perform to people who didn't come to the show specifically for you."

No. Bill was always made to tone down his show by the people that work on Letterman's show.

  • he looks like alex jones lol

  • Wow, David actually introduced him as Bill Hicks and not "uuuh Bill uuh Hicks"

  • test 1 2....test test

  • big up the smokers!. im sick of all the anti smoking crap. why cant they just ban it and stop moaning. they want the money from the tax thats why. smokers pay for bare shit

  • "pretend you're working" " why don't you pretend I'm working" haha

Bill Hicks was cool...great at seeing through heaps of BS

  • i love bill hicks, but is he the best ever?..must be top 3..behind pryor, and of course lenny bruce??

  • Yes smokers tend to die younger, but those years you get from not smoking, you don't get em when your young and happy, you get em when your too old to fuckin walk, and wishing you'd smoked so you wouldnt have to live any longer in your crumbling, rotting body

  • @Androg You fuckin said it man!

  • @Androg whether or not you notice, smoking is detrimental to your physical health in every day living. not just because itll kill you also.

  • If we're able to make channelling happen in the present day in any manner, would it be reasonable to hope Bill comes back - in, say, Jay Leno? Seems like at least two birds with one stone, to me.

  • non smokers dye every day, but smokers dye more often, younger, unhealthier, more painfully, and they piss off everyone else. BTW, i love bill hicks, i just said this to the people who defends bill hicks arguments about smokers, he is just making jokes, why u think he quit smoking??? he smoked again when he knew he was going to die, but he quit before. SO sad he died.

  • It's a great job I love the hour....fuckin quality! The man was a legend,R.I.P.Bill.

  • Denis Leary owes 1 career!

  • You don't have to be American to think he's hilarious, he just is. He did that style of comedy better than anyone.

  • poor old billy. love him to death. i sound like a fuckin pussy sayin it but fuck

  • @thegunclub123: theres nothing "pussy" about appreciating bill, my friend.

  • @thegunclub123 butt fuck? hawt

  • see the way bill walked on stage cooler than a muddafucka!

  • yeah i noticed how he walked out there. The natural cool guy.

  • you don't have to be american. I'm not. He's so fucking hilarious, and poignant. Just my opinion. Remember this isn't his ideal set, they censored him, told him to do the light stuff. watch his proper stuff, it should make you laugh...

  • @cookieyeah1 Hicks was most popular in the UK, actually. He never really caught on in the States.

  • @cookieyeah1 the thing about these letterman gigs is that he had to censor many of his jokes so a lot of times the punchline is lost and his language has to become more tv appropriate. check out some more of his non-letterman work.

  • pancreatic cancer is not caused by smoking. So no iot really wasn't a joke on him,. Its an illness that your destined to get from the time your born it doesnt come from smoking its genetic and it is smoething with a very low survavability. many young men find out they have a couple years to live in their 30s and 40s so shut the fuck up.

  • It might not CAUSE pancreatic cancer, but it most certainly increases the chances of developing pancreatic cancer. Burning tobacco produces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which don't cause the stem cell to mutate, but do cause any previously mutated stem cells to proliferate. In layman's terms, if a person has dormant cancerous cells in their pancreas( not extremely uncommon) smoking would increase the chances of the cells becoming active. So to say there isn't any correlation is ignorant.

  • @imay420 the chances of getting cancer when you somke're probably around 60% but even if you don't it's still 30% if people wanna take the risk fuckm i'm speacking as a smoker by the way with a sister and mother and uncle who've never smoked and have cancer fuck that i'm gonna enjoy myself abit before it probably hits me i'm not saying people should smoke i'm saying people should get of smokers backs and all this passive smoke bullshits fucked what about all the exhaust fumes from cars

  • Show me where I attacked smokers? I've been smoking for 12 years and just gave it up on 1-1-10. It's been a miserable 2 1/2 weeks. I loved to smoke, but I love my wife and kids more and knew someday I'd regret it. I have no problem with people smoking at all. I just saw comment about smoking not being related to pancreatic cancer and wanted to clarify. Five years of my life I smoked anything I could get my hands on. So don't give me that leave you alone speech. Makes you sound paranoid.

  • yea sorry was venting a bit bin beeing stressed to stop to extream lengths up to so far 10 total strangers in a week telling me why i should stop before me even saying a word to them and i just keept my mouth shut cuz i didn't feel like having the same conversation over and over again then i saw your post and had to reply

  • @David321Davidson

Sorry to pop your eternal life-bubble, but you're going to die too.

  • @System3007 you can get pancreatic cancer without ever having smoked

  • @System3007 bill hicks died a legend. however you lived on to become one of the millions of youtube trolls that ruin the internet and the earth. remember the part where bill said we all die? yeah thats gonna suck a lot more for you in 100 years.

  • hapi nu yir

  • y'can see the makeup job...sigh! poor bill

  • I miss Bill.

  • haha

  • man i was in diapers when he performed this

i was a fan in the making, i would say it was a shame how he died but i dont think he wouldve liked to be remembered like

    bills humour is eternal

  • The first joke sucked so bad but he didn't care, gota love the attitude, the rest is gold.

  • You can tell it was filmed in the 80's by that suit he was wearing

  • CLASSIC !

  • lol I love the hour genius

  • hahah the classic work seg! ha i fucking miss bill hicks!! fucking inspiring as hell.

  • bum dung?

  • So true, you just have to pretend you are working. I got in shit, because I was laminating at my Job, It takes about 5 minutes for a sheet to go through the laminator, so I thought I'd read a book during those 5 minutes. Big mistake; I got chewed out. I had to stop reading, and just look like I was contemplating something.

  • I wish he gave me a caddilac.

  • you know what i really love about this guy, is that he encourages me to think for my self which feels great

  • exactly. other comedians come up with their own idiotic agendas then shove it down your throught via the media. i think its about damn time for a revolution or something in this fuckin country

  • i'm down

  • @Televizzle07 another man encourges you to think for yourself. can you see the irony?

  • @tehf00n the source of inspiration doesn't matter - the outcome is important in the long run :)

  • @Televizzle07 lol think for yourself eh? if you need a comedian to help you do that i wouldn't want to live much longer

  • @rehan0123 yeah, being inspired by an artist is stupid and you are smart. Shouldn't you be watching wrestling?

  • @jimmydore lol look jimmycrackcorn i think the who's the boss is still on? lol and yes if you can't already think for yourself? then really you don't deserve your thumbs because we as human beings shouldn't be restricted as the dumbasses that society has turned us into

  • @rehan0123 sorry it bothered you that I pointed out how dumb what you wrote was, if that kind of stuff bothers you then you should avoid writing really ignorant stuff on the internet. See most non-mouth breathers understand that it is normal to be inspired by artists, but you don't seem to be able to understand that.

So if you don't get inspired by artists, who does inspire you, I mean besides people that don't get art?

  • @jimmydore how bout being inspired by yourself to then be able to connect with other artists who seem to percieve reality the same way you do, instead of having to look at an artist and then base your opinion around it....call me crazy or ignorant then i guess that's what i am :)

  • @Televizzle07 So you needs someones permission to think for yourself...irony

  • @Televizzle07 so you think for yourself because bill hicks told you to. hmm

  • "...pretend I'm moping, knock yourself out."

  • ..."I'll pretend their buying stuff and we can close up. I'm the boss now you're fired - How's that for a fantasy?"

    I had to. ;)

  • PURE BRILLIANT GENIUS!

None Better, None Smarter, Noone More Hilarious. Bar none.

Bill Hicks... you are my Hero!

I miss your enlightening epiphanies. (no religious connotations meant to be interpreted from this last comment or do I)

    Hmm?

  • Bill Hicks is not dead, he lives on in us, our minds, through his videos, his spirit is always with us.

  • Bill Hicks

    Born

    December 16, 1961

    Died

    February 26, 1994

Just imaging what he would have been doing which all the fodder !

    God I miss this guy.

  • best comedian ever. Died at 33, like JC, coincidence?

  • ..yes

  • He was 32.

  • He would have had a field day with ole DUBBYA

  • I think he wasn't one of the best, he simply was the best....no?

  • Miss the Dark Poet.... R.I.P. Bill Hicks... a man that died before his time. ;)

  • RIP Bill, one of the best comics ever

    my dear god!

  • The right Girl The Right Bar The Right Friends

    AMEN!

  • how i wish he was alive now

  • even with a clean act he was just so damn funny and REAL! My favourite comic by faaaaaaaaar.

  • My hero!!

    The voice of the rLOVEution!

  • i love this man

  • ditto. he's just one of the best. and certainly of our generation of comics, and insightful people.

  • A true genius. Bill cut through the bullshit and made you see things in a way you never thought of before. A unique comedy talent.

  • Quite possibly the best constructed comment to ever hit youtube.

    GREAT JOB!

  • elvis"thankya verymuch"

    cretin69-smoke some pole,ukfukfukfukukfukfukfukfuk ;~^

  • someone's high...

  • Youtube is reeeeally becoming a shithole. I'd have to say the thing that annoys me the most is how you can't read comments that have a certain number of "thumbs down". I WANT TO READ THE FUCKING COMMENTS ASSHOLES

  • just press reply-problem solved.

  • Or select SHOW ALL COMMENTS

  • Letterman is a prick

  • oh dear....dunham...wow...i can't believe that pathetic excuse for a comedian is even being mentioned on a bill hicks page.

  • man, i was born in that year...wish i was older so i could have seen him live. on the other hand...no, like my age. but bill hicks rocks!

  • if you think Jeff Dunham is funny then of course you're gonna think that, cause this is more sophisticated comedy, not just stupid, pointless, redundant racial stereotypes. Ventriloquism does not equal comedy dude

  • Comedy does not equal sophisticated humor. Comedy is something that entertains and makes you laugh. I have no problem with Dunham, but I tend to prefer comedians like Hicks.

  • you havn't got a fucking clue mate - not a fuckin Scooby Doo

  • funny the phrase bum dung gets the most laughs...

  • no use tellin neone who doesnt understand, but i dont need them understand, if they dont like dont watch it then,

    Hicks is a LEGEND
