Geesh I remember as a kid going to my grandmothers and uncles house watching this, my uncle used to say let's see what's on home box :) meaning HBO, home box office, we also used to play duck hunt and Mario on the Nintendo. Good times.
It was great because we lived in the country and got 3 channels, channel 3 PBS and UHF lol..
Good times, I'd leave it all now for one day of it
@sonicbigfan1 You were born when you were suppose to be, dear. It has been said from ancient wise ones there are good and bad things in every generation, as well as wonderful and not so wonderful people. Embrace your generation and change the things you don't like about it...perhaps you will be a fearless leader for all those in your age bracket.
They played this well up into the 90s on occasion, usually at night. The music is so epic, the whole thing holds up well today but they would never bring it back since it's too long. They cram everything they can for previews and whatnot between movies.
Generally epic song from childhood. However, that's a real sloppy cut and music fade when it goes inside of the O. Obviously a different song. I prefer when it just cuts off at the right point.
I wonder if HBO execs ever read any of these comments? It would be so cool to see this used again. Heck, they could even modernize it with CGI if they wanted but keep the theme the same.
@joshywood I'm with you on that one! And I'm only 24 years old. It's a shame when a young guy like me longs fro an era that he either wasn't born in or barely remember. Nowadays junk are just bland or way too modern for my taste. I was definitely born in the wrong decade lol! Anyways, I've never heard this variation of this logo before. Very interesting!
Holly shit! This brings back memories of when I was 7 or 8 and could stay up on Friday or Saturday and watch a movie. I haven't heard that music since I was a kid. I got butterflies iny stomach because it brought me back to that time instantly. I could see my living room just as it was set in 1983. Fucking scary feeling hearing and seeing this but in a good way.
I watched a special on how this intro was made and you will not believe the amount of work that went into this one minute intro! It was completely amazing with an awesome miniature set that was built. Thanks, for posting!
I saw that special the other day. It's floating around YouTube somewhere. Amazing how it took them three months just to build the miniature city. And to think, they could probably do it within less than a week today with CGI, and have it look only half as good.
Wow. '97? I can't believe it ran for that long. 14 years. Can't blame them, though. It was a cool intro. The first time I saw it was during the premiere of the original Star Wars.
The ones that immediately followed the space bumpers were more bland. From what I remember, it was just the HBO logo put somewhere in a variety of landscapes (the city, the beach, etc.). They were very short (except for the prime-time movie, which was longer because they described the movie being shown). When I first saw the new ones, I thought "Boy, these aren't as exciting as the old ones!". And they weren't used for long.
I remember HBO producing a "behind the scenes" featurette on how they made this opening. They spent months working on that tracking shot down the street (which was all done live... no CG until they got to the "spaceship" HBO satellite.
I remember the featurette- they used a bunch of lites arranged vertically on what looked like a turntable to get the "trail" effect around the "O" at the end of the intro
We lived in the country so no HBO for us as kids but on weekends my parents would let me go over and spend the night at my cousins who had it! Great memories.
I want to thank you for adding this to you tube! It was such a blast to listen and watch this intro again after years of not being able to see it! This is a classic! Awesome! Thanks for taking me back!
