A black hole is a star with a size greater than our sun, collapsing into a size of a football. Now imagine holding that ball in your hand, with the same mass as it originally was.

Working at nasa does not mean he understands how gravity works. All we know about him for sure is that he has the same understanding of gravity that most people have. He knows how strong the gravity of the earth and moon are, but not the effect that the gravity causes these two worlds to have on each other. I don't have enough room to explain it here, but the reason the earth's rotation is slowing is the same reason the moon's rotation slowed to always face us with one side.
