Ok..the GREATEST and the BEST are 2 different things.
Here is my 2 cents worth..Ive seen all the greats. For an 8 ear period Orr was the best player ever.....but Ill tell you somthing and if you disagree ..TUFF cause its true. I take Gordie Howe for 25 years over Orr for 8 any day and I don't look back. Orr the best ..but Mr Hockeyt, Gordie Howe is still the greatest all around player ever.
Bobby had class on the ice and off it......total hockey player, gifted and humble. Pains me to see the likes of no-class pieces of shit players like Ference, Chara, Thornton, Boynton etc donning the jersey. I'm a Habs fan but still respect the original 6 and other teams players. Got no respect for the bruins though....cheap-shot artists chasing smaller players around and then having the hubris to call them out after a series......no class.
I was born in 1951 in Greater Boston, and started following the Bruins about 1965. They have won only two Stanley Cups in my lifetime (1970 & 1972), and Mr. Orr far and away was the number one reason. Just a fabulous athlete AND person!!!
On 8-2-10, my wife and I visited Bobby Orr Hockey Hall of Fame in Orr's hometown of Parry Sound, ONT. What a fabulous place!! Everybody who loved Orr should go see it!! Lots of film clips, and guests can even "play announcer" for 6 or 7 of his great goals. What I particularly loved about Orr (I was born and raised in Boston area and was and still am a huge Bruins fan) was that he NEVER got a swelled head about his wonderful talent. Unlike so many of today's "OSB"s. Overgrown Spoiled Brats.
Having grown up in Boston, seeing Bobby Orr in a Blackhawks uniform makes my skin curl! That said, no one -- I mean NO ONE -- was, is, or ever will be greater than Bobby Orr!
Oh my gosh! The good old days! Chillin by the bench, getting Orr to sign my jersey, and pounding the glass screaming as loud as I could, "GO BOBBY GO, ALL THE WAY, ALMOST, ALMOST... GOAL!!!!!!!!"! Id do anything to go back to those times. Richard G Orr, The Best Hockey has, and will ever know. #4, Harmony to any Bruins Fans ears! Go Orr!
Makes you wonder two points: #1 What if Bobby Orr had an injury-free career and #2 What would Bobby Orr's career scoring be if he were a Center and not a Defenseman?
He wouldn't have been better as a forward. Watch how much offense he creates simply by making guys miss all the way back in his own zone. He created odd man chances with two strides.
Gretzky can't compare with Orr in any way .Orr RULES then and now evenif he did retire because of injury! He could still rule hockey with hhis bad knees! NO ONE BEATS BOBBY !
If I had a wish, it would be to heal Orr's knees during his days with the Bruins. Retiring at 30 was a real shame, he deserved to play until he was like 50.
orr is the greatest ever forget gretzsky.orr changed the game.revolutionary the sport was changed how it was played and for that reason alone he is the GREATEST EVER HANDS DOWN END OF SUBJECT mario was better the wayne also
"sorry guys, Gretzky was the greatest ever". Sure. Guaranteed to be under 30 yrs old.
The great majority who have followed the NHL for 45 years disagree, son. In fact, most would not even rate Gretzky in the same class as Orr. Gretzky....lol
135 Pts in 74-75 Too bad Tony O got hot in the first 3 game series. Could of been Bruins Flyers again. At this point his left knee was shot. HTF did he score 135 in 74-75 then only play 10 games 75-76. Too Bad! He should of won Hart in 74-75. Come on media voters???
Orr won the scoring title twice. In between those years of winning the title, he came in 2nd to team-mate Esposito 4 times. Has any player in any sport had a year like Orr's 1970 ? I think not. He won in 1970:
Hart Trophy
Conn Smythe
Norris
Art Ross
Stanley Cup Champion
Canadian Athlete of the Year
Sports Illustrated Athlete of the year
Plus/Minus Award
1st Team All Star Selection No player in NHL history has won these awards over an entire career, let alone 1 season.
I,m 63 years old and saw him play his first game in the old Montreal Forum and many more. I've seen many great players, Lafleur, Cournoyer, Beliveau, Dryden, Lemieux and Gretzky but Boby Orr was the most exciting to watch.
It's an 80 minute video with interviews with other players that played with and against Bobby throughout his career and many highlites of the goals he scored, the plays he made etc. It's NOT a movie.
Garge56: who are the singers? They sound like Abba. What year was the song done? Great, great photos. That Cup-winning goal (0:53) of your video was stunning. Kent St incident and USA was divided, but then BOOM!!
That shot at 3:55 of Orr, Williams, & Bird is priceless. I lived in Boston at the time ('91) & a local TV station had the great idea to bring in these three Boston sports legends for a combined interview. They should have gotten Bill Russell too. What a phenomenal group. Boston sports fans are lucky; now we've got Tom Brady!
bobby orr thank you for making hockey the way it is today and realy orr is the best of all time gretsky was hardly a devesive beast orr was lex was injured all the time and orr was a Dman wow
there is no player in his league.bobby or is just the greatest player in nhl history.what cant the man do.there have been alot of great players but no other player reached greatness like good ol #4 thanx
he is simply the best wayne gretzky only wishs he was good enough to hold boobys stick but we all know hes not the only reason waynes stats are higher are because when wayne played the NHL was way bigger so he played way more games in a season then bobby and bobby was also defence but bobby orr is the best there is the best there was and the best there ever will be
Boston beat NY Rangers 3-0 in Game 6 of the Finals, to win the 1972 Stanley Cup. Gerry Cheevers got the shutout, while Bobby Orr became the 4th player (and only defenseman) to score two Cup-winning goals in his career. He was the 1st to win the Conn Smythe Trophy twice, the first to win the Hart three consecutive years and the only player to win the Norris five consecutive years.
Boston also should have won in 1970-71. that was the year that they blew a big lead at home in Game 2, and then Ken Dryden became simply unconscious (i.e., fabulous) in goal for Les Habs. Montreal also benefitted from the officiating, which back then allowed the defensive team to do all kinds of holding without getting called in the playoffs. Especially Henri Richard (the Pocket Rocket). He would hold every Bruin that he could, and finally he would get called, and then he would throw a fit
Bobby Orr's overtime goal at :40 gave Boston a 4-3 win over St. Louis, and gave the Bruins the 1970 Stanley Cup Championship, in four straight games over the Blues. Orr won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
Yep! Bobby Orr is the best..the very best..the best ever..no one is better..just like the song says; the best, better than all the rest, better than any one! Simply The Best.
if you guys check out the Orr highlight reel (the three minute one i think) you'll see him throw his face in front of a puck to save a goal. I don't see Gretzky or Lemieux doing that. and i think it's that will to do everything at both ends of the ice that seperates Orr from all of them.
orr was better than gretzky; ask those who played against both if you have any doubts. I guarantee you that the guys who played against RGO and against "The Wayner" will tell you that Orr was better - and by a 2 to 1 margin
He is the only player to win 4 NHL individual awards in one season (1970 he won the Art Ross, Hart, Norris and Conn Smythe plus the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete and was named "Sportsman of the Year" by Sports Illustrated magazine -- topped off with the big one -- The Stanley Cup).
While Gretzky holds many records, its hard to compare a forward and a defenseman. Orr was the first player to score 100 points while racking up 100+ penalty minutes.
He was the first defenseman to score 100 points in a season and he did it 6 consecutive seasons, the first player to do so.
I think what you say here is something that Deford's quote pointed out. As you say "its hard to compare a forward and a defenseman" and I don't think in any sport one can truly 'compare' unless they hold the same position. And as you say "He was the first defenseman to" tells the story. Personally; I favor Orr since I was introduced to Hockey in 72 and lived in NE.
"It's not necessary to get into who may be better, Orr, the defenseman, or Wayne Gretzky, the center, except to note that Orr did something that Gretzky had no opportunity to do, and that was change the very nature of the game."~Frank Deford
WOO you can see a picture here where he Slapshots, Note that he does not drop his hands low like normal hockey players. His hand is kept high, which is so hard to do
The greatest hockey player of all time right here. Neither Gretzky nor Lemieux have nothing on the great Bobby Ore.

Boston won the cup in 1970 and 72, Orr scored the cup winning goal both years.
He holds the record with 8 straight James Norris Trophies (best defenseman).
He won the Calder Memorial Trophy (1967) as top rookie.
He won the Hart Memorial Trophy 3 times - MVP during the regular season (1970, 1971, 1972)
The Conn Smythe Trophy twice - Playoff MVP (1970, 1972)
The Art Ross Trophy twice (1970, 1975) NHL regular season leading scorer and the only defenseman to do so.
