I grew up in Texas and I bought this when it first came out. They used to play this song at Numbers night club in Houston and we would go friggin nuts. Excellent music.
wow! Youtube is great! I never thought I'd see this video again.... One night I fell asleep with the TV on. Half awake, I heard this video playing on some music video show. All I remember were his teeth... and of course the song. This was in the late 80s... it was kind of hard to find the album. The guy at the mall record store thought I was joking when I said,"do you have Mc 900 foot Jesus with DJ Zero Hell with the Lid off?"
To 900heyzues I was AT that Nine Inch Nails Show in Pittsburgh at the Metropol too over 20 years ago it was NOT 900 ft Jesus that opened up for them, it was some German Group forgot their name through, with the power saws, sparks etc.!!! I wish that it was, but it was NOT I am 100% positive about it. I worked at the radio station that promoted that show so I should know!
Power saw? Nope. Never happened. I did have one ass-kickin' prop in the early days, though. It was a bonafide straight jacket, not from a costume shop, but the real deal. Me and Zero were on our way to the UK for some live dates, without a real concept for a live show. Backing up a bit, I'd just signed to Nettwerk. I had an EP out on my own label: Gonga, never intending to do live shows. Now I had a record deal and live shows were inescapable. Remember, MC 900 FT JESUS was solely a vinyl concept
@900heyzeus I've got footage of that from your Trees show in...uh...1990? It's on VHS, I have yet to figure out how to convert it properly to digital. Soon, hopefully.
@pyenapple i'll be glad to take care of it... pay for s/h to my vhs->dvd->youtube and then send the original back to you, hit me up with any questions, do this professionally and glad to help = rock on
@900heyzeus Iwas the biggest fan as a kid going through my mid teens, trying to get my mates to love this album like i did. the cover actually scarred me a little at the time :) bigup, to me this was the first rapper on that sick shit, nobody else was doin!
@900heyzeus i think i might have some of the hell bank notes given out after escaping the straight jacket @ the first of two times you played at our club night in san jose at a converted pussycat theater way back in the bahdy blahdy blah! quite memorable. really glad that those shows were inescapeable because you left us feeling quite inspired ps. timmy thomas rules
Saw MC 900 ft Jesus - opening for Nine Inch Nails...I seem to remember him running around Metropol (Pittsburgh) with a power saw or some such...lots of sparks! Awesome show! Was it really 20 years ago. Say it ain't so!
ohhhh yes...in looking for long time to found this track.....posted on category unknown-resi live cut tapes-a goog men give me today the info.thx for post this real cool indy dance nr.genial song!
>>>>>> great......... man , I've liked song every since it came out & still have the CD......... the sound went great with the all the "spice" flowing through here in Houston,TX. back in the late 80's/early 90's.....awesome seeing you mister MC900 commenting..............J.
@900heyzeus This is you? If so, congratulations for enlightening the people who have been lucky enough to hear these songs of yours. A real contributor.
I bought this CD when it came out in 1989. And i still have the same CD today. I love this track and the one called: Shut Up. I saw MC 900 FT Jesus and DJ Zero back in 89 in Austin, TX. Never will i forget it. Good times.
If you dig his stuff, I cannot recommend his three albums enough: "Hell With The Lid Off", "Welcome To My Dream" and "One Step Ahead Of The Spider". If you don't already have them, get them used for cheap. You will not be sorry! :)
"State" was the name of the bar/restaurant where it was filmed STATE BAR Near Dallas' Fair Park The space is still there but it is something different now
I love this song. It's pretty much rap, but it's actually not all that annoying like the rap music I usually am subject to listen to. I also got this "funk" vibe off of it.
He became a pilot or pilot trainer or something. I believe he got pissed off with the industry after releasing his last album. one step ahead of the spider which is a truly fantastic album. the guy released some great music over his short career. Never got the chance to see him. He played Edinburgh in late 80s but didn't know about him then. I believe he can now occasionally be found DJing in his hometown as well as his piloting. I hope that helps you
You are correct. I realize that not everyone from that time and genre were on Wax Trax but, to me, that label symbolizes the whole counter-culture movement of my college years. If it wasn't for Wax Trax, a lot of people, including me, wouldn't have even heard of bands like Skinny Puppy. Back in the day, it wouldn't be unheard of to be dancing to MC 900 ft Jesus one minute, Revco the next, then enjoying some New Beat. It was a very creative and innovative time that inspired me to become a DJ.
Wow! I totally forgot about this. Kinda unbelievable since I have the devil w/ the halo from the 12" tattooed on my back. now I'm on a mission to rebuild my late '80's early 90's music collection. anyone remember crunchomatic, tackhead, and severed heads? I miss wax trax.
Yes, yes, and yes. I was recently surprised to discover that Severed Heads is still going, but their distribution now seems to suck. If you only knew how badly I miss WaxTrax....
It always seemed like MC 900 Ft Jesus should've been on Wax Trax, but he wasn't. He was on Nettwerk, the same label as Skinny Puppy, Singly Gun Theory, Sarah McLachlan, Hilt, Manufacture, Moev...and others I can't remember right now.
Oh, I know that, fer sure; I dealt directy with both labels in the early 90's. I assumed he meant the period, myself. We say such things often around here. :) Hell, I watched MC 900' while talking to Mark of Consolidated, who was doing the sound. We both had limited Nettwerk hats.
I saw MC 900 @ the New Ritz in NYC in July 1990 w/ Consolidated, My Life...., & Meat Beat: Nettwerk/Wax Trax Night of Chaos!!!! Mark came on stage in a straightjacket.
The strangest cut on "Hell with the Lid Off" is the second to last Track called "Born with Monkey Asses"...some crazy woman screaming at an insane assylum doctor...pure genius!
I had the cassette for years and never heard Monkey Asses until I got the CD. I agree that it's brilliant - I laugh every time. Too bad there's no video of that one.
I've had this song stuck in my head for the last few days. Its been years since I had heard it last so I thought wtf... I'll look it up.... & omg. Well its been no relief and here I am days later replaying it over and over and over and over.
My god, I just realized this song is almost 20 years old! I'm fucking middle-aged! Waaaaaa!!!
Great to see MC 900 Ft. Jesus on here, though. He's still on my playlist after all these years. Wherever you are, man: make some more music! Please. We don't care what kind.
