To techMaven. Sometimes it is not who you beat that makes greatness allude you. Lewis had a draw and a win against and old holyfield and an old tyson, we wil never know what would have happened in their primes. What deprives lewis greatness is not who he beat but who and how he lost to.Getting knocked out by McCall and Rahman just were unforgiveable and showed the man lacked the chin for greates.i thought lewis also lost the mercer fight and klithscho was beating the crap out of him..
@bobber0623 Lennox Lewis dominated the era. Yes, he lost those two fights but he avenged both defeats. On top of that he defeated: Morrison, Mercer, Tua, Bruno, Tyson, Galota, Bowe (in the amateurs), Holyfield, and Razor Ruddock. Thast a pretty impressive resume. The man is in the top 10 and maybe top 5 of all time!
@ah93704 He didn't dominate the era he wasn't even in title fights for most of it. By the time he got to fight Holyfield everyone was out of the picture. It's not an impressive resume at all he just fought people at the right time because luckily for him he wasn't a big draw card so the other guys were using themselves up in other matches.
@capablemachine I remember when Bowe refused to fight him. He actually tossed one of his belts into a garbage bin. Those guys were scared shitless of Lewis. Lennox really shook Bowe up in the Olympics. He defeated everybody in the era. He ducked nobody. they all ducked him because they were afraid of him. Like it or not, Lennox was the dominant man of that era!
@ah93704 Absolute utter rubbish, his problem were the aforementioned problems that no one wanted to see a fight with him and he lost just as easily when faced with actual competition. He didn't defeat everyone in the era the only one he actually fought was a washed up Holyfield. Shook up in the Olympics? Are you mentally deranged? Morrison was HIV positive, Tua was terrible fight, Bruno had retired once, Tyson was shot, Golota was a quitter, Holyfield was shot, Ruddock was shot late replacement
@capablemachine they were scared shitless of him. Lennox Tko's Bowe in the Olympics. Lennox defeated everybody they put in front of him and he avenged both of his losses. That makes him the best of that era you pugilistic puts. You dont know shit about boxing. Lennox defeated Klitchko, tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Ruddock, Mercer, Tua, Golata. He defeated all the guys they put in front of him. What else is a champion supposed to do?
@ah93704 No you don't because you think boxing is about being macho and "avenging" defeats even though one guy was just a luminary who knocked him out with one shot and another quite because he was a junky. They weren't "scared shitless" the managers choose the fights and they take the fights with the biggest money and they're not concerned with school boy antics that a grown man like yourself should have grown out of by now. Lewis was an HBO fighter which is why he was praised by HBO.
@ah93704 No it isn't. Rock Neumann was quarrelling with the WBC and they said they would fight him on the end of the Michael Dokes fight if he renounced the WBC. The fighters don't have an emotional attachment to their fight amateur record which affects their professional career. Everyone from Holyfield to Toney has lost to someone in the amateurs and they never see them again. The only benefit you can get is through promoting the fight like Tyson and Tillman.
@capablemachine Rock Newman was a fucktard who fought with everybody. Look, yuo cant name anybody that defeated Lennox Lewis that Lewis didnt come back and defeat later on. He proved himself to be the best of that era. He defeated Holyfield (should have been twice).. Now, I admit a lot of those fights took place past Holyfield and Tysons prime but that was their fault. Tyson turned down millions to not have to fight Lewis. Lewis retired with the belt. he was the best of that era..plainly
@ah93704 No he's definitely not the best of the era. The other fighters had their careers used up and luckily for him he was such a poor draw card he rarely got big fights. When he did fight some of these washed up talented guys he didn't do very well. Scrapping by with a draw and MD and getting knocked out by luminaries he should have beaten the first time doesn't make him the best. It's not "their" fault it's just boxing and it's happened from the 20's to the present day.
@capablemachine you're a retard. Everybody wanted to see Bowe fight Lewis. Bowe wouldnt fight him. Everybody wanted Tyson to fight him, but Tyson refused. Holyfield even refsued. The guy is 6'5 and has a right hand that could fell a truck. Even George Foreman said he didnt want to fight Lewish. You're a nub dude. You just hate Lennox Lewis and cant stand that you're favorite fighters arent the best and Lewis is.
@ah93704 Incorrect everyone wanted to see Holyfield and Tyson which is wha happened. Bowe and Lewis may have had a fight in the end but he met the right hand of McCall and Bowe lost to Holyfield. You think it's someone's perogative to fight for the title anytime they want but the public normally gets the fights they want to see. George Foreman was over 40 years old and HBO commentators were constantly berating his choice of easybeat opponents.
@capablemachine If you remember correctly, Lennox Lewis defeated Razor Ruddock at the very end of October and then a week or so later Bowe defeated Holyfiend. Both fighters were at their very best. Lennox Lewis issued a challenge but Bowe refused to fight him. He took one of his belts and told him to go look for that belt and be a trash picker. Anyway, you're right about Lennox losing to McCall but the fact still remains that Bowe ducked Lewis. He was mad that Lennox knocked him out earlier!
@ah93704 Boxers don't have these kinds of personal vendettas years after the fact. They're professionals, they lose a fight or win a fight and they move on with their lives. Fans like you attach your personal component to it and it's something a 10 year old boy might do not a name calling "adult" you claim to be.
@capablemachine When one fighter knows the other fighter has his number sometimes he avoids him. Thats why I admire Floyd Patterson. He knew he was gonna get crushed against Liston but he fought him anyway. Riddick Bowe pussied out on fighting Lennox Lewis. Hope you learned about boxing son!
@capablemachine and just to prove to others what an absolute retard you are, the time which we're discussing (well, I"m talking to a child and its not really a man to man discussion) is WHEN MIKE TYSON WAS STILL IN PRISON. Anyway, Bowe ducked Lennox because he knew he'd lose to him. He felt the power of Lennoxes right hand and wanted no part of him!
@capablemachine Yep, people overlook the fact that Bruno had been semi retired for almost 3 years between 1989 and end of 1991, he was at the end of his career when he fought Lewis not in the early stages or the middle stages, he was just short of 32 years old and 11 years of boxing when he fought Lewis.....
@bobber0623 A new tag I'll give ya. Ali lost to Norton twice (in reality) and Spinks (Dear Lord) in reality. Lewis beat Holyfield twice. He lost 2 fights due to complacency and won therafter. He ended Ruddock career and Tua's and Golotas and Masons and Grants and Holyfield to all intent and putpose and Tysons and Bowe was too much of a chicken shit to fight him. @rc2869 Ali had a great chin,he took it from Frazier,Foreman,Norton,Shavers, some of the hardest hitters in heavyweight history.Lewis got ko'd by Oliver McCall and Hasseen Rachman(pardon the spelling if that is in correct). Those two were not exactly pulverizing punchers and definitely mediocre fighters at best. His glass chin was exposed. Both in their prime Ali would have ran circles around Lewis and would have scored a 10th round ko in my opinion.
@rc2869 He didn't "end" Ruddock's career, Ruddock already had an issue with breathing that nearly ended his career and he lost to Mike Tyson twice. Then Ruddock was a late replacement in the unifcation tournament because he was out of the picture. Tua kept going but lost key fights and didn't stick with a trainer. Michael Grant had no career, Holyfield kept going and kept losing in similar fashion because the steroids caught up with him. Bowe was boxing politics.
Bruno was decent... i mean he was good for his particular time period. He seemed to probably be a frustrating boxer to be a fan of for the brits.. he had promise and good skills, but he was not a killer. certainly when you speak of all time greats he is not on the list.. Quality boxer. Of all the english boxers i would have to say Lennox Lewis is by far the best. Maybe even quite possibly top 5 of all time..
@TechMaven Tyson got made to look like shit against Buster Douglas and lost, George Foreman got made to look like shit against Jimmy Young and lost, Joe Louis got beat by a semi retired Max Schmeling and lost.
So just because Lewis lost a few rounds against Bruno, doesn't mean he shouldn't be included along the best ever. Lewis wasn't even with Manny Steward when he fought Bruno, and Bruno was no mug either, remember he was the first to test Tyson's chin also.
big frank just looked a bit mechanical all his career and that was evident here. one of those times when the home crowd may have made him freeze instead of helping him. And apart from an awful fight against tyson, bonecrusher was a really damn good heavyweight. Was there a problem with his right hand? I would hope so, cause otherwise it was stupid tactics not to throw it more, or arrogance. Either way a bad loss, and showed that like Cooney, frank had no idea of holding or movement to recover.
@late896 The problem with your comment is, all of Bruno's losses were by knockout and in most of those losses he was way ahead, thusly his chin let him down. Ck out the facts before you make yourself look like an armchair boxer.
Great KO. Bruno got busted by a very motivated, determined, fit Bonecrusher. Both were in fantastic shape, but Smith was bigger, stronger, had more boxing skills & stamina and Killer Instinct. Smith wasn't there for an easy paycheque. The Bonecrusher here would give ANYONE trouble......
Brunos patience did eventually pay off. In 1995 he outpointed and beat WBC Champion Oliver Mccall (who knocked out Lennox Lewis) Unfortunately it was only short lived. In less than 6 months Bruno took on Tyson, and was knocked out in the 3rd. Bruno should of had a couple of warm up bouts first.
@sidecrusher How in HECK was McCall a BUM man??? That dude is one of the TOUGHEST geezers out there to this day! Bruno was no bum either. Bad comment friend...
If only Bruno, learnt how to hold to bide time, & to get through rounds he would have won this fight. And the same with the Lennox Lewis fight, Bruno was well ahead and got caught with a left hook, from Lewis. If he was able to learn how to hold he would have been a more successful fighter.
It was never a question of learning to survive with Bruno. When he shipped a hard punch, his body froze...that's a physical reaction. Bruno was never physically capable of taking a hard punch and retaining his faculties.
Brave as they come but had a chin made out of china and had absolutely no lateral movement or defence when hurt, left many great memories in British and world boxing!
I remember this when it happened. Being from Wandsworth myself it felt like someone beatingup my brother. For years, I could not watch this as it brought me to tears.
OMG. Bruno's reaction just before he hit the deck reminds me of an old Richard Pryor routine on boxing.
"I wanted to fall but my legs were in GREAT shape. I kept tryin' to fall, but my legs said, 'Why WE gotta look bad cause YOU can't take this ass-whuppin?'"
A final point....This was a key defeat for Frank...He admits that Lawless was going to step up the opponents if he won here....Mike Weaver was next...It made his management ultra cautious again....if only he had seen this through its possible that Lawless would have shed his fears and had him fighting tougher fighters...it was back to some crap fighters after this....hit his development badly.
I agree 100%. Even in his losses he put up a plucky and game performance (barring the Tyson rematch, where he just fell to pieces) and IMO showed he was capable of gaining a few big scalps rather than beating no hoper's that he learnt nothing from. I also agree that the Muscle bulk didn't do him any favours, he was way too stiff and going into the late rounds must of been murder for him.
Thanks again for the upload mate, I love these 80's-90's fights.
HaHaHaHaHa Bruno was a bum ...All of his fights were hand picked for him and he was knocked out by a spent journey man ...Know what I mean Harry Ha Ha Ha!
@Indul1 Some people say that Bruno had a weak chin, I don't particularly agree with that, he was never knocked out with a single punch, it always took a big onslaught from his opponent to shift him. His biggest downfall IMO was his inability to ride out a storm. He found it a real struggle to survive once he got rocked, and was too easy to hit once hurt. Unlike someone like Holyfield who could be rocked but had great survival instincts too see him through a storm.
@lordblighty Agree.....he admits in his book that holding on was something that he did not do naturally it killed him in the big fights against (Lewis '93') and here....I think the key factor was also the muscle bulk (damaged his movement and stamina..fighting a 12 round decision (maybe the approach he should have taken against Lewis) was always going to be hard.
@lordblighty id put it simpler than that mate. When bruno got hit he stayed hit. It was like all the short circuits in his body made him freeze like a statue and he would carry on getting hit. He was very very hard to put on the floor as he could take one helluva punch. But all his losses were connected to his inability to as u put it "ride the storm" or hold or hang on or carry on once hit. His poor stamina didnt help or his make up. He was a front runner. He never did like 2 much resistance
@sikhman100 Yes, the Mccall fight was a rare example of ringcraft by him, front running but having the skills that night to suppress the Atomic bull when he started pouring the punches on in 11/12 rounds....Bruno earlier in his career would have lost that fight..
@Indul1 - It's a shame looking back at this, Frank had this one in the bag. Just to remain cautious, keep his guard up for another minute or so and he was home free.
i used to watch brunos fights if you could call them fights on sportsnight he always used to fight no hopers or journeymen as harry put it soon as he came up against a half decent guy he got knocked out .the british boxing public were barmy thinking this robotic pile of crap could be world champ . i dont know what was worse ,watching bruno or that bastard fairy joe bugner . people used to call henry cooper but he had more boxing skill /heart and soul than those two clowns put together .

@Indul1

I have never understood what went wrong here...All Bruno had to do was hold his hands high and keep centre ring...........
