@KalashnikovKid762 i agree with you to an extent. i have owned an ar15 and still own an ak. if you don't keep an ar15 well lubed and clean it does have more tendency to malfunction. i've stuck my ak in mud and used it to gain surface area when climbing up a muddy bank and fired it after the mud dried on it. i used an ak mag to dig a large rock out from under my vehicle when i got it stuck and it fired reliably with the dirt in the mag. ar's are great, but the ak is a monster.

Other than that with its massive recoil (due to the lack of any recoil dampening system) only allows the user an accurate (even though it is inaccurate to begin with because this gun is only meant for mass production) with the first bullet. @MYSTICtheCLAN Technically speaking, you wouldn't call any of them AK-47's even if they are fully automatic because the AK-47 was just a pre production prototype, the actual model adopted in 1949 was just simply called "AK" by the Soviets. You can read a manual in Russian and it won't say AK-47 anywhere on it. It really doesn't matter though. It's just so common to call them AK-47's even though it's incorrect.

It's steadily gotten better over the years but the bottom line is, the more moving parts the easier it is to have problems with. The AK has very few moving parts compared to other rifles, so less can go wrong with it. Dirt has less places to mess it up compared to an M16.

I know shit about firearms, but what always annoys me about discovery: Give me some real info about this machine, on a tech. level. Why is it so easy to use? Why does it, after being drained, thrown in the sand, run over by truck still fires? Is that reliability unique, how come? They say ‘It’s the mass-produce ability that’s key to it’s success’ how is that so unique? Though this is just a snapshot, I’m pretty sure it’s another useless ‘documentary’ combined with 30 min.of commercials

@neuropatico I know, it's a shit documentary. No elaboration. I know the AK didn't become popular because it was easy to use. Most firearms designs are easy to use. The M1 Carbine is easy to use. The greasegun is easy to use. Just to name a few. They make out the AK is only rifle that offers that level of reliability. I highly doubt it. There are rifles out there that are just as reliable or perhaps even more then the AK. It's just none of them ever made the headlines or got the same notoriety.

@neuropatico As far mass production goes, it's hardly unique. There are small arms that are cheaper to make then the AK. The Sten gun and Grease gun is simplier and cheaper to make the the AK. Being cheap to produce is an area that has made the AK successful, but it is not the only or primary reason the AK is a successful rifle.

@MYSTICtheCLAN Technically speaking, you wouldn't call any of them AK-47's even if they are fully automatic because the AK-47 was just a pre production prototype, the actual model adopted in 1949 was just simply called "AK" by the Soviets. You can read a manual in Russian and it won't say AK-47 anywhere on it. It really doesn't matter though. It's just so common to call them AK-47's even though it's incorrect.

For most of us, the real world in guns means home defense. The .556 and shotguns do not have the penetration of an of the 7.62X39. Note that when shootouts occur, people get behind things, like walls or cars. They do not, typically, stand 300 yards out--which is where the AR shines--and I know people that can nail you with an AK at that range anyway. Anyway, my rifle of pref. is the SKS. Better made than an AK.

@Odhinn222 You can get AK's that are just nicely made as a SKS, but they'll cost you. The big problem why AK's can suffer quality control issues in the US is because we can't buy military AK's. We have to get parts kits guns that are assembled by Century arms that have poor quality.

@Fantascular because its an amazing weapon. its been 40 years and no ones been able to best it. and whats obsolete about it? the only thing the ar15 / m4/m16 or acr, scar, hk416 and so on only have a bolt release and improved safety and accuracy. big woop nothing that makes a real differance. the effective range of an ak47 is 450 yards. and at that range the sight post is as big as your target, so theres no need to shoot that far. you cant reinvent the wheel. the ak47 is the perfect combat rifle

@joshkkv Those very claims are the ones that don't live up to the military's testing every time it's passed through. Don't you think the US or UK might have specialized their weapons in that caliber and model if it were really that successful? Even the weapon's home country is trying to make arrangements for replacement. Well actually, pretty much almost all of their weaponry. The only thing the AK has going for it is weapon mods here and there.

In yugo war (1991-1995) i use 7 riffles and only ak 47 can shoot on -40 C.Every single gun stop when you shot a few bullets.I love this gun even if i was wounded with it.

Sonne, your lack of experience is amusing. the mass of the projectile gives this rifle vehicle stopping power, its a simple gas port design. it is VERY reliable and VERY accurate provided you buy a decent version..your general statement about the rifle is like saying since a volkswagon beetle has tires..it must also be a lincoln towncar

@hansen99x During the Vietnam war when the m16 first came out, they had lots of problems with dirt causing misfires and jams. It's steadily gotten better over the years but the bottom line is, the more moving parts the easier it is to have problems with. The AK has very few moving parts compared to other rifles, so less can go wrong with it. Dirt has less places to mess it up compared to an M16.

Had the Stg-44 been put into production in 1942 when it was originally conceived
