Russian anti-ship missiles perhaps are better than their US counterparts. In particular both russian and american missiles use the same form of guidance systems, are equally precise and accurate but the Onyx and Granitt have an advantage over harpoons in terms of speed. They are supersonic compared to Harpoon which is subsonic.

The Harpoon does indeed have sub-launch capabilities. It's the "encapsulated" version. The missile is loaded into a capsule with the same dimensions as a torpedo and launched just the same. It's aft fins unfold for proper surface broach angle. I was McDonnell Douglas' resident rep on a West Coast Naval Weapons Station for over 7 years. The Harpoon airframe was used for the SLAM. It saved millions by not having to be redesigned from scratch, plus the cost of already existing spares.

The Granit's range is limited to 388 miles which means it has to be launched within the 449 mile combat radius of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
