You play it so lovely. I have been trying to play this for weeks now and only managed the first two lines. I have only been playing for a year and I am 52 do you reckon, with determination, it can be done? Cheers
i'm a french beginner and have a P155 too, and i wanted to know, what settings did you use? and did the preset song and the thing about "right/left hand" of the piano help you practising?
Hi there. The key tops are plastic and I think the piano weighs around 50lbs but I'm not sure exactly. It seems very sturdy though, I've had it for a little over a year and haven't had any keys go out or become stuck.
Just got home from a very long stressful day at work and Listening to this while smoking a fine cigar with a little bit of Hennesy really helped me relax. Beautiful interpretation mate.
this is my favorite piano song i've loved it since the first time i heard it. it makes me feel like i can feel the world spinning if i close my eyes, i would pay $ to be able to learn to play it myself. PLEASE make a tutorial video for this song!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!
a lovely interpretation, a bit too much pedal. really emphasise those pauses. but other than that it was enjoyable and relaxing to listen to! well done :)
I detect nothing wrong with your version it is your own interpretation of the piece. That must be the definative version for you. I don't know what the purists are looking for. If they could only point out the errors they think can see(hear) we players would be all the wiser. I suspect that most of then could not play the piece to save their lives.
Hi Schmoe. I am just spending an evening looking through versions of Chopins Nocturne in Eb. I see that you recieved some adverse comments. My best was " Poor Chopin". As a non classical player of more than 55 years I thought I had done good. However the purists disagreed. I still cannot detect where I WENT WRONG, there must be a difference that I and maybe you are not detecting At the moment I am making a video response to all versions tosee if I can draw more adverse comments.
That is very nice. Thanks for posting. I wanted to see the fingering. I'm guessing the video with old keyboard would be better for that, as it is from above. I hope you have an overhead shot in future vids.
Great playing Sir, usually this piece is cast out as overly played :P But in my opinion, you played it just right to make it sound fresh. :) and I must say, you did capture a certain Melancholy in it, so I congratulate you on that, really well done Sir. :)
Thanks. You are absolutely correct, the reverb in many of my videos was way too high and it turned out I had the damper resonance cranked up, wish I could go back and change them. I've turned it down for my more recent videos (except for intentional cases like the Vangelis covers) and it's seemed to help.
I like it. The keys themselves aren't quite as responsive or supple as they are on many good acoustics, they're just a little on the heavy side IMO (doesn't seem to slow down Kyle Landry though, he plays really insane fast passages on his P-155). They are better than most digital pianos that I've tried. Though if it's possible I'd recommend finding a store where you can see for yourself.
As for the Nocturne, I really love that one but it's way out of my league. =P
I think this is the best interpretation I've heard. I have just started learning this myself, and you're making me jealous with your graceful trills and mordents! =P
@AnotherSchmoe Don't get me wrong, it still sounds good, and you have the emotion down very well, just the chords are way off in the beginning. Also, wax your damn arms man seriously WTF? it looks like a primate is playing the piano. VOTE UP IF YOU AGREE!
@AnotherSchmoe Wow, seriously? I am for once not trolling or being a dick and you take it the wrong way? Your loss man. People laugh at you behind your back because of what I am not afraid to openly tell you about. Your narcissism and sarcastic remarks tells me a lot about your personality; And your closed minded way of dealing with constructive criticism tells me that you are a very insecure person who strives for attention on the virtual world rather than in real life. Care to share the correct chords / notes then? What is your experience in this matter? Do you mean to tell me that Yundi Li and every other professional concert pianist is also playing it wrong? I am playing the exact same notes as they are (they have better technique and interpretation but that's another matter) and I didn't miss a single note in the entire recording. Of course you're trolling silly, you're the one that's starved for attention. Nice try though. ;)
@AnotherSchmoe man, dont worry about that.. someone retarded enough to consider waxing arms as constructive criticism and incorrect chording doesnt quite understand what performance art means.. or having testosterone. this was a great version, and i only wish i could read music instead of playing by ear cause ill never be able to snag all of it that way. ever consider some jazz, 'as time goes by'? if there are infact missing chords the improvisation and season were a worthy composition. bartman
Beautiful! I love Nocturne! I actually started to learn it today. The right hand seems easy and I almost got it but the left hand.......looks very hard so far.
A very beautiful interpretation! However the sustain pedal was slightly 'murky' and held down for too long without changes, which caused some of the harmonies to overlap. Apart from that, a great performance with good hand technique =]
Thanks for the comment! On top of the pedaling I think I also kept the reverb setting up too high on a lot of my recordings and I'll try and keep it turned down a bit more in the future as it's a little excessive (it's good for some things like the Blade Runner piece but probably not for most stuff).
Great! How did the left hand chords ope for you?? I am playing this piece at the moment and the left hand chords are hard! ANY tips on playing this ???Reply back when you can! Thanks!
Thanks! Not sure what to say except keep practicing, also try and practice the left hand separate from the right hand. Thankfully the same chords repeat a lot in this piece so once you learn them well it becomes easier to remember. I also keep my eyes on my left hand while I play (you can't see in the video but that's what I do), because if I watch my right hand I'll miss the jumps in the left. I only glance at my right hand when I need to move it further up the keys.
I've been playing for about 5 years (don't remember exactly when I started). Not sure how much I practiced it each day when I was learning it, was a pretty long time ago. Maybe an hour or two a day, maybe more or less depending on how I felt. It's just a hobby and I don't keep any kind of practice schedule though, I just play when I feel like it. I wasn't able to play it very good when I first learned it though, but it was a long time ago and I've gotten more practice since then.
Thanks! All I can say is to practice it. I originally learned this piece a few years ago so by the time I made this newer recording I'd already had a lot of practice with it. When I started out on it I sounded horrible too. Best of luck!

I see you like Chopin also, and you play very well!! I enjoyed your nocturne very much. I'm curious, what make of digital piano is that? I've never seen one like that before. BTW: I'm impressed with your memorization!

Well, we can't worry too much about a few negative comments in the midst of so many positive ones. I've noticed negative comments even on professional recordings by such legends as Horowitz etc.
I know, they are discouraging to read nonetheless. In any case, I truly enjoyed your performance of this piece. Thank you!
@AnotherSchmoe You're doing great so far with 23 5-star ratings. Impressive! ...especially, as you say, with some YouTubers criticizing even the pro's. This piece is probably one of the most scrutinized on YouTube (this, and Fur Elise...lol).
Nice playing.. btw, is this piece hard? I looked at the sheet music, it looks formidable, but it sounds slow enough that I think I could do play it. Any troublesome parts?
It's fairly challenging to learn, but much of the piece is spent more or less repeating the same pattern (with only very slight variations) so isn't too much of a problem once you get it down. You'll probably end up spending most of your time practicing measure 17 and all of the last page, those are the more difficult parts. Good luck! =)
@makidude Troublesome parts.. uhm.. 2nd page, chromatic down scale. it's hard to keep in harmony with the left hand because the beats are sooooooooo mixed up -_- like 3:02~3:06
it's like 32 16 16 16 32 8 16 32
like really mixed.. other then that, toward the end, easier is i gave you the part he played and 3:52~3:53 that trill part, I had some trouble there.
Hey man. I commented to the song from The Big Lebowski on Terser's jumping spider vid and I'm going to have to say that this one reminds of Tombstone. "You know, Frederick f***ing Shopan?" Haha. Nice videos.
Awesome! Btw, did you use the speakers it came with or you hooked it a sound system?Or you recorded it with the piano midi and audioswapped it when you posted the video?
Because the speakers with the P155 doesn't sound very good to me, especially full blast.
I usually wear headphones, I don't really like the built-in speakers either. I record the sound straight into the computer using an analog audio cable (plugged into the L+R line-out connections on the back of the piano) and have it connected to the line-in port on my PC, and saved as an .mp3 in Audacity. Then I sync it up with the video from my camera (camera is muted so there's no background noise). The sound is the actual P-155 though, so it sounds the same as when I play it.
Thanks! This is the only one I can play right now, I think most of the Nocturnes are harder than this. I tried learning Op. 55 No. 1 once and could play the first 3 pages but the 4th one proved too advanced. Might try again some day in the future though.
well well well .... exelant ...fantastic .. wonderfull ... hard to describe in words ... it is more than worth to add on my fafrout ... trueley amazing mr !
Schmoe, your interpretation has definitely matured since your last posting... (or is it just your new piano..hahaha..joking)....Seriously, great tempo and dynamics....you've definitely captured the feel of this piece. I envy your Chopin-playing skills..certain parts look really intimidating to me and difficult....maybe one day I'll play this too. :-)
"Practice is the great magician, who not only makes apparent impossibilities performable, but even easy."
I'll bet you could do it if you invest enough time and practice into it. When I first started learning this piece I didn't think I'd ever be able to play the end stretto section. It took quite awhile before I was able to play it at tempo. I've been playing this piece for a few years though and it's gotten a lot easier since then. Just have to practice. =)
Dear Schmoe - as I have said before not even Chopin could do it better.
I have played this piece myself many times and know it in smallest detail. And could never end it as you showed. What an exhibition the last 20 seconds.
Thanks! You've probably heard it many times actually. It's used fairly often in movies and TV shows, as quiet background music to conversation scenes and such. =P
You play it so lovely. I have been trying to play this for weeks now and only managed the first two lines. I have only been playing for a year and I am 52 do you reckon, with determination, it can be done? Cheers

Reminds me of a quote:

Wow, well done!
This is one of my favorite pieces by Chopin, and one I eventually plan on learning.

I can't think what this song reminds me of D; it resembles the ending theme from pokemon ruby/sapphire a bit =]
Again, same thing i say on every video of yours, AMAZING playing, not one mistake, and it sounds just as good as the original.
I might actually try and learn this one =] being unemployed ¬_¬# means i have more time to practise =]

@MikePinkney
Thanks! You've probably heard it many times actually. It's used fairly often in movies and TV shows, as quiet background music to conversation scenes and such. =P
