I don't blame that guy for driving that train like that. I used to live in Texas. If I were that engineer, I be driving like that trying tro get the hell off from down there too!
So where exactly did you film that beautiful bitching behemoth? I was riding neck in neck with his twin brother just this past Sunday (5/1/11) on Texas Hwy 36 betw. Rosenberg and Wallis, I up from Houston on my tiny Kawasaki 250R 'cycle, but doing 70mph (daytime speed limit) to keep the traffic (not much of it at 8am Sunday, fortunately) off my tail. Forget dangerous crosswinds, the BNSF engineer's whistle alone almost blew me off the road! David and Goliath, I and that train, but what a thrill!
Oh man, Loved this, must have been good track, I live on the main CP line (the old SOO Line) from Canada to the US at North Portal, SK. into Portal ND. And I have never seen the freights running wide open like this, It is a beautiful thing to see, thanks fr sharing it!
Why do they need 4 locos,(17000 horse power), to pull 4000 tons, Over here in the UK, one of our class 60's or 70's could pull that easy, greatt stuff thoe, very interesting
@EWS60500 A few things; first, we don't know that this train is only 4000 tons. 2nd, they might have dropped a few thousand tons somewhere or expect to pick up a few thousand somehwere down the line. 3rd, sometimes extra locomotives will be in a lash-up as part of a power transfer, i.e., moving locos from one place to another. Finally, single 4400 HP locomotives frequently are used to haul trains of 4,000+ tons.
@articoli Piggy backs are fairly light so 4000 tons is probably pretty accurate, the ups trailers would mean its most likely a z train and there for is powered up to maintain track speed at all times. z trains always have higher horspower per ton allowed than other trains.
@EWS60500 One AC4400CW or Dash 9 could out pull one of your class 60 or 70s. More Horse power, more starting TE and more continuous TE. We put extra motive power on encase another engine fails, or just to accelerate and stop faster.
@bradstrains I agree now mate, I must admit I much rather your american locos to our UK locos, they have much more character and more of a power full look, Id love to be a railroader in the US!
@EWS60500 Now what America needs is better high speed passenger trains. Just about the only good one is the Acela, in Europe there are a lot more high speed tracks and trains. In Britain how many locomotives do y'all use to pull 70 cars? In America maybe 3 or 4 to get them over the mountains.
@bradstrains Yes, but when you think about it america has more of a freight railroad, whereas the UK is a bit of both. I think that the USA railroads are the best in the world, people can go on about Frances' TGV, and how reliable it is, but lets be hones the US has very nice looking locos like the SD70's. Over here in the UK the longest trains are about 31(some 40) cars long, and it depend on the loco, like a class 60 could haul 40 no probs, but u would need double headed class 66's for a 40.
@EWS60500 I both model and rail-fan and Some engines like AC4400s or AC6000s can pull 60 cars depending on there type alone. Do y'all use natural aspiration or turbocharger/supercharged? Most of our modern ones are turbocharged. But now GE is came out with this ES44 series that isn't good in high speed power but it is tier 2 environmental.I'm not a fan of it. Some of our engines have upwards of 200,000 lbs Starting tractive force, and could start 100 cars.
@bradstrains Thats impressive, I think our class 59 (based on your SD40-2) is a good haulier, and could haul about 50 cars, but again depending on the gradient. Class 66's I believe are Supercharged(up to notch 4) and turbo charged( notch 4-8). Our GE class 70's, which are similar to the ES44's, but much smaller, have twin turbos. As for starting tractive force our best is the class 70, at 120,000lbs, if they were as heavy as your locos I guess it would be higher. Do US railroads still use GP38?
@EWS60500 We still use the EMD GP-38 as a yard switcher sometimes but not usually on the mainline or as a road engine. GP-38s are supercharged, and have 16 cylinders to get 2000 HP. The AC4400 is turbocharged and gets 4400 HP from 12 cylinders and the AC6000 is twin-turbocharged and get 6250 HP from 16 cylinders.
@bradstrains I like the GP38's, they look like a go anywhere loco! AC6000 6250HP, amazing, they sound lovely too! I must say. Most of uk locos are 16V but our class 60, which has a mirlees power unit, is a strait 8 cylinder engine, and chucks out 3100hp, it must have a huge piston stroke for that power. I must say its great talking to u on here and getting all this US railroad info, thanks mate. Do any locos still use the V20 engine?
@EWS60500 EMD SD80s and 90s use 20 cylinders, SD80s have 5000 hp from 1 turbocharged 20 cylinder engine and SD90s have 6250HP from 1 turbocharged engine. They're almost the same except for the engine inside. MP-15 switchers of ours only have 12 cylinders and a supercharged engine and they have 1500HP and more starting TE than a GP38. They use the same engine except the GP38 has 16 cylinders and the MP15 has 12. The new genset switcher has 3 engines and 2100HP with them in a switcher!
Love it! do I take it you are the passenger :P Nice zooming, Where is this ? I've got a few similar I took of UP but now there are so many stoplight that I can never keep up with them. Thanks.
