  • Interesting, how does this compare to doing deadlifts while standing on a platform (eg larger ROM deadlifts) or trap bar deadlifts while standing on a platform? Both would definitely start from a lower position and similarly challenge your spine with a greater angle to vertical as well...

  • @BentropySS Deadlifts on a platform will likely enable the lifter to use more load, compared to Plate Deadlifts. Plate Deadlift challenges the grip DIFFERENTLY - the fingerflexors are engaged at a larger length compared to the length the have when you grip a bar. Some lifters find that this type of grip training transfers to their grip on a bar. Don't compare this exercise to a deadlift, compare it to other core exercises that you might want to do to strengthen the deadlift. Karsten

  • Best exercise to improve any exercise is to do the exercise itself.

The weak link is the one that gets worked the hardest and gets stronger the fastest.

If supporting exercises help with your deadlift then you can deadlift more often instead.

The only alternative I see in speeding up the strengthening process is to do partial reps with heavier weights.

Quarter squats for squats, rack pulls for deads etc.

Speeds up the transition to heavier weights, by strengthening tendons and ligaments.

  • @christosswc : Thank's for the comment! However, I don't agree with you :-) On most cases a lifter will try and compensate for a weak link and not challenge it. The nervous system looks for positions of strength and avoids position of weakness. One example: If your abs are weak or your back is hurting, you will automatically aim to execute the lift with a vertical torso. If you have a weak link, find an exercise that works this musclegroup/position HARDER than your target exercise. Karsten

  • That dude's got a giant alien head!

  • @unlockthepower Circumference = 64 cm to be exact. Unfortunately, science has not yet proven the relationship between head size and intelligence :-)

  • How many sets and reps should be done? And - I ask not as an attack but as a desire to understand the exercise - how does it improve your deadlift? I am guessing that it helps with the first part of the deadlift.

  • @rmsolympic1 You are rigth - the exercise shown affects the first part of your deadlift. Without going into too much detail the exercise is an "antiflexion exercise" that challenges the core muscles to keep the spine straight despite the load in the hands that tends to flex the spine. You will have to grip the load closer to the ground compared to a regular deadlift and your spine is at a greater angle compared to vertical. This increases the challenge on the core. Exc also helps hip flex+grip

  • Is this exercise effective for Conventional Deadlift as well as Sumo Deadlift?

  • @HalifaxHercules The exercise is more specific to a deadlift with the semi sumo or sumo stance due to the similarity in foot position

  • I've never seen before this variation of a deadlift!

    Good exercise!

    Take care.
