What it means is that every human began with common ancestry, and ethnicity or race is the twisting of that common ancestry into something original. Since you want to say white and African Americans are mixed to different degrees, with none being racially monolithic, then neither is truly black or white, and that makes the distinctions between them meaningless; that is why I did not answer your white query. It is because all of the women you mentioned above primarily descend from European peoples with diverse skin tones whereas black Americans primarily descend from West Africans, who generally are more uniformly coloured skin. In other words, the discrepancy is due to the native differences of the two groups that comprise white and black Americans.

I am mixed - black and white. I don't care about labelling myself as either black or white as I am a human first. I only feel the need to comment on it when someone tries to tell me I'm black because I have short afro hair, or that I'm white because I'm so light skinned. For example, in Virginia many antebellum colonial era descended African Americans trace their ancestry directly to black males and Irish and other white woman that mixed with each other.
A person was a slave ONLY if the mother was a slave. Many "whites" were slaves too and there were also many indentured servants.

Well the answer to that is simple, about several hundred million Sub-Saharan Africans are actual blacks. By labeling ALL light skinned people black you are still denying the actual light-skinned mixed people their right to acknowledge their heritage (essentially WHO WE ARE). BTW, Tyra is even lighter than Williams and has Hazel eyes. and she's not mixed either. anna deavere smith and Tischa Campbell Martin are also light skinned and not mixed, so you really can't discern a mixed person from a black person.

Wrong. Genetic tests do not prove "everyone is mixed". They prove everyone is related, but that is not the same as saying every Chinese person has white ancestry and every Indian is half Italian. What it means is that every human began with common ancestry, and ethnicity or race is the twisting of that common ancestry into something original. Genetic tests can also help determine the types of new ancestry within people, like whether or not a Nigerian has forbears from England.

African-Americans are a more racially mixed group, and that's the only reason they come in more than "one shade", contrary to what is usually the case in West Africa. It is because all of the women you mentioned above primarily descend from European peoples with diverse skin tones whereas black Americans primarily descend from West Africans, who generally are more uniformly coloured skin. In other words, the discrepancy is due to the native differences of the two groups that comprise white and black Americans.

I am mixed - black and white. I don't care about labelling myself as either black or white as I am a human first. I only feel the need to comment on it when someone tries to tell me I'm black because I have short afro hair, or that I'm white because I'm so light skinned. I am MIXED no matter what I look like and I love both my parents for loving eachother for who they are and not the colour of their skin. Mixed people need to stop feeling the need to choose and embrace themselves as a whole.

For example, in Virginia many antebellum colonial era descended African Americans trace their ancestry directly to black males and Irish and other white woman that mixed with each other.
A person was a slave ONLY if the mother was a slave. Many "whites" were slaves too and there were also many indentured servants.

Its possible to be a biracial,mulatto or creole and be a white caucasoid at the same time , Barack Obama , Halle Berry , Beyonce, Alicia keys are all white caucasoid people with recent admixture, their NOT black people; ANYTHING mixed with Caucasid Neanderthal blood becomes a caucasoid ,

@july95211 The argument many "African Americans" make is that if they are not considered black because they are mixed with white, who is? Well the answer to that is simple, about several hundred million Sub-Saharan Africans are actual blacks. Most African Americans are are just mixed raced people and some are even more Caucasoid than anything else, especially those "light skinned" ambiguous ones that clearly carry high admixture.

@stevenzsofly The vast majority of so called "blacks" you call "diverse" looking here in the U.S are mixed and very heavily mixed at that. The origins of the true original blacks that were brought over from slave ships was West Africa. Go to a place like Nigeria and you'll be hard pressed to find this so called "diversity" you see here in the so called American "blacks" lol Most West Africans carry a very particular set of traits. Many African Americans clearly do not look like pure West African

@dearestjen I did mention the majority of African Americans are mixed, not all. There are quite a few African Americans that look West African, but many don't in the sense that many clearly look mixed with variations of European and Native American ancestry. I might be jumping to conclusions, but many people might "mistake" you for being African American simply because many ignorant people equate African American with being black.

@AnonRep31 You're exactly right, I'm Nigerian and I'm as "pure black" as black gets. My features are clearly prominent and right away I can tell apart an African American from a West African or an East African for that matter. So for me to hear black Americans claim monopoly on "blackness" is beyond funny. Not that I agree with anyone claiming monopoly on the subject but if it so happens to be the case that some group should, then it rightfully belongs to the motherland, & not a "spin-off."

@nlytend1 I definitely agree. Many of them try to extend black to all sorts of mixtures and gradations pretty much diluting its true origin. They do this because they know that most of them are mixed to some extent and are not the true representation of blacks and its original people. Its understandable though, they didn't have much of a choice in choosing their social identity. Racist whites denied them the right to claim any European ancestry, look how far its gone with people such as Obama.

No. Lumping all light skinned blacks with the mixed population is not the answer. By labeling ALL light skinned people black you are still denying the actual light-skinned mixed people their right to acknowledge their heritage (essentially WHO WE ARE). We have a right to declare it because "IT'S THE TRUTH!!". Mixed is a very definitive term and I feel its much better than "mulatto" or "half-breed" or "mutt". (Of course multiracial or biracial might be more politically correct).
