Derek said that this song is a metaphor for how the government tried to co-opt the civil rights movement in the mid to late 60's. Its hard to get it from the words obviously but there it is.
Jena = The Jena Six, a symbol of racial injustice in our times.
Given the context of your statement, reytimx, it kind of makes sense (I hadn't heard that about Derek's interpretation of the song): The government attempts to "shut [those fighting for equality] up" by seducing them into thinking they're fighting for the same thing...
This is the tragic story that happens all too often of a woman who gets drawn into a relationship with a man who just want to use her. She wants to engage in conversation about things that really matter to her but the guy "half-listens" to her mainly with intentions to bring her defenses down with alcohol and talk of "giving her love". This song has a lot of meaning for me as I've been that woman...it's a very painful experience to be treated like a play thing by a man you thought was a friend.
You know - I was TERRIFIED when he said he was switching to techno-esque music after hearing one zero (remix). But this stuff is really pretty awesome. Good stuff, Derek. Good stuff.
Five people didn't give Derek their love! Thumbs up this if you agree!!!

Someone suggested to me that it was about Christianity and Conservatism/the Republican Party. I am not sure I believed them.

Derek is my homeboy. Gotta say, I know he can make awesome music but I didn't know he could crank out a funky jam like this!
