Derek said that this song is a metaphor for how the government tried to co-opt the civil rights movement in the mid to late 60's. Its hard to get it from the words obviously but there it is.

Jena = The Jena Six, a symbol of racial injustice in our times.

Given the context of your statement, reytimx, it kind of makes sense (I hadn't heard that about Derek's interpretation of the song): The government attempts to "shut [those fighting for equality] up" by seducing them into thinking they're fighting for the same thing...

This is the tragic story that happens all too often of a woman who gets drawn into a relationship with a man who just want to use her. She wants to engage in conversation about things that really matter to her but the guy "half-listens" to her mainly with intentions to bring her defenses down with alcohol and talk of "giving her love". This song has a lot of meaning for me as I've been that woman...it's a very painful experience to be treated like a play thing by a man you thought was a friend.
