This the era where Alex Skolnick (Testament) filled the shoes of Criss Oliva. Alex cited Criss as a huge influence on him and was thrilled when he got the call from Savatage to join them.

what many people don't know, not that I want to sound like a teacher, is that Savatage was kept alive paradoxically by Criss' death. by the time he passed away Jon had already quit Savatage. and Criss himself wanted to quit the band too. he sent his CV to Poison out of all the bands. Jon reunited with the band and kept it alive in memory of Criss. in the end we got some really nice albums off this Savatage era, especially this live album, Dead Winter Dead and Poets and Madman.

I had the pleasure of knowing Criss and Jon. I went to Dunedin Hish School with them and was in many classes with Criss. I also partied my ass off at the Pit many times while watching them grow into the great musicians they are.

This singer is Zack Stevens, he's replacing Jon Olivia who was the original singer. If you pay attention to the video though you can still see that Jon is the one playing the keyboards, he's still present just not singing. For a few years he couldn't sing, his voice was trashed, and the years of heavy drinking had taken their toll.

I was at 1st show with Zach at the old rock it club in Tampa back in 91.What a incredible band and these guys recorded many albums in Tampa and were regarded as a top band locally since they first broke on the scene. I remember back in the late 1990's I was looking for new rock music to listen to. A friend of mine at the time was huge on Savatage and when I heard Edge of Thorns well I was thrilled my friend had all their cds and live bootleg videos at the time. Now in the era of official DVDS well I need to check Cd Universe for a DVD by them. :) I have most of their remastered cds.

The new album is a MAYBE. This year we will see the release of a new Best Of... That includes 2 cds and the Japan Live dvd (finally). Next is the re-release of Poets cd. After that they will be re-releasing the entire Sava catalog (remastered w/bonus tracks). So lots going this year for Savatage... so Raise the Fist of the Metal Child \m/
