I love Tim Minchin. If there was a drink called 'the minchin' I would be pissed every night. if there was a strip bar named 'so fucking rock' I would be a sex addict. If there was a superhero clothes brand called 'white wine in the sun' I would PROUDLY look like an idiot. This song deserves every thumbs up there has ever been, because this man is a true inspiration. Thankyou tim. Your number one fan
Quality songsmith but was always curious about the song title referring to white wine in the sun, believing Mr Minchin to be from Melbourne, but he's from Perth - makes sense now.
hm. this presents an interesting challenge. clearly this is an amazing song, but now i have to get my friends interested in a christmas song in January.
I just love that my mum and I who have never agreed on anything in our lives, share this song together- I love that Christmas day is all of us,(aunts and uncles included- thanks aunty marg and uncle Richard) my 2 brothers, my 1 sister and all our kids (13 total now!). Family is magic- christmas is an excuse for that magic to happen. The white wine helps as well (when the beer and sparkling are done). Thanks Tim.
I got Ready for This on CD from boyfriend this Christmas. We had this song on repeat throughout the cooking of the Christmas dinner. I fucking love it! Just so lovely and moving and real. Thanks Tim!
122 people are so hurt to learn that someone might not think as highly of their religion as they do that they don't like a sweet song from a father to his baby girl, where the proceeds go to help folks with autism & their families?
Sounds like 122 people also need to get over themselves already.
I love this song. I'm not an Australian so I don't know what it's like to celebrate Christmas in the song, but we do all come together and we actually have a great time. Especially since I don't get to see my siblings that often (we're strewn all around the world), but we all come home for Christmas.
@FRIEDBREAD62 That's your opinion. It's completely wrong, but it's still your opinion. I cannot help but feel that you are just not intellectually capable of understanding Tim's humour. He does use a lot of big words after all. Stick to watching phoneshop and other equally moronic comedy.
But sometimes I am embarrassed to be Aussie. I read about the treatment of Aboriginals, the way we discriminated them horribly, and the way we hurt them - both physically and mentally.
It is at moments like those when my pride of my beautiful country takes a hit. I feel embarrassed to live under the Australian flag, embarrassed to sing Advance Australia Fair.
It is at moments like those that I frantically tap Tim Minchin into my YouTube search and list
Music has been lost in this day and age. Real music I mean. Everything is synthesized now-a-days. So I thought. And then I stumbled across a beautiful being - Tim Minchin. And he showed me with his emotion and through my tears that there are in fact great musicians with raw talent, they just aren't seen. I have listened to Minchin every day since I first saw this video - all I can say is it never gets old, because Minchin loves his music, he feels his music, he has lived his music. Thanks Tim M.
watching tims face, in this performance, its obviously an emotional song for him, as it is for those of us who also love it, which makes the song even better still. love your work tim.
i love this song. SO much. its like it was written for me and my family. being an aussie who has spent time away from home. there is nothing quite like coming home to Oz. and its so true, its what we do, sit and drink in the sun, together, in this awesome country that is australia.
I beleive that every one of the 121 "people" who have pressed the dislike button must of misunderstood the idea of "thumbs up=like" and "thumbs down=dislike" because this song is beautiful. Either the above mentioned reason of they are just too thick to appriciate genius.
@FRIEDBREAD62 Are you just one of those wankers that listens to the first minute of a song like this and comments before you even stop to think about what he's really saying? I would respect your opinion otherwise, but saying that he's just babbling is incredibly stupid. This is one of his more personal songs- if you're more interested in comedy, listen to "Confessions" or "Prejudice" or "Lullaby"
@DNAmaze I was actually referring to my own tears, but yeah, the sweat does seem to be getting in Tim's eyes. I can sympathize; I've been on stage and it is hot. @__@;
Truly amazing, so beautifully sung and so harmonious on such a grand piano, your one amazing guy Tim, watching your face throughout the whole song shows that this song really means a lot to you. Bless you Tim and happy new year to you And your family.
I wish I could love this song... it's so awesome. But my dad and my mum divorced when I was 16 (fucking 16, wtf?) and my brother is in jail for being a druggie, I don't have any sisters, my gran is long dead because I was born to a bunch of boomers long past their prime in the 80's. ....I wish I could love this song.
@pinkymixology I'm sure one day you'll find someone special, someone worth spending Christmas with, and more importantly you can raise your own kids and give them perfect Christmases to remember fondly. Then you can love this song :)
@pinkymixology We are in almost exactly the same situation. My parents divorced when I was about 11 and my brother's in jail for drugs. My sister's pregnant with her third child although they live at the other side of the country so I don't see them. My Gramma died a couple years ago from cancer and I can't remember the last time we were one big, happy family. But this song brings back so many memories... It's special.
you rarely ever see a comedian show that they can write material that isn't taking the piss out of something and that is serious and has a deep meaning....this guy is a ledgend in my eyes :) keep it up timothy!!!!!
This is sooo much better than the iTunes version. He has it nailed here - there's a passion that doesn't exist on iTunes. An absolutely marvellous performer - and I'm an ex performer. I know how bloody hard it is. Phil
Even agnostics and atheists glorify the Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit... "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." --Colossians 1:15-17
Every time I hear this song, I cry. No reason... I have a family, and I see them every Christmas, and every Hanukkah since my dad's side is quite Jewish.
But it still makes me cry. It makes me cry because it's true. It's honest. It's... *real*. This is what the holidays are about. *This* is what *life* is about. Enjoy it.
This is the most sincere Christmas song I've ever heard. Tim is great and, because of his sincerity, his message resonates with a diverse crowd. Even if you don't agree with some of the lyrics, you would be mad to deny the emotional chord that this song hits with anyone that has parents, kids, or love in the hearts today.
I'd never heard of Tim Minchin but followed a link and absolutely LOVE this song! It expresses my own feelings perfectly in a way I couldn't do, the love/hate pull of religious holidays, traditions, when you've come to not believe or even feel hostile toward religion. Maybe it's especially true in the US where religion is so often used as a weapon, a political tool, and "The Bible says" and "family" are used as an excuse for hate and cruelty. Still, love & tradition can bring comfort.
@COOmpie No Idea. Even if it is Christians, there is not a word out of place. The man is my hero, especially today when I'm working alone and my family are all to far away.
@Hyperpower24 Wow... u r SO right! Thanks for that!!!! [NOTE: after Xmas the effect button will prolly be removed so some folks won't get the Snowflake Effect]
I have no relatives living away from home at the minute as my brother just came home from Perth. but this song makes me wish i had family away :) AWESOME
I'm Catholic, and I think this song is absolutely amazing. I take no offense whatsoever. I totally respect atheists like Tim who embrace Christmas not just for the presents, but because they understand the value of spending time with family.
It doesn't matter whether you're Catholic or Protestant or Atheist or Agnostic or other, anyone can celebrate in the spirit of Christmas because it transcends religious beliefs. That's what has become so wonderful about it.
@Supermonkey1977 It's the ONLY Christmas song that has ever made me legitimately cry. I have a baby girl and when he gets to that line about his daughter... oops! Here we go!
I love how you spend the first half of the song waiting for the punchline, and by the time you realise it isn't coming you don't care because it's so successfully moving.
His nervous uncertainty during the opening seconds of this song has made me a fan. That opening chord speaks volumes! I recognise those moments. He is a man both creative and clearly bedevilled with insecurities and sensitivity. I like him.
@KevinEDolan I like what you say, but I don't see or perceive it as insecurity but as he feeling very sensitive and emotional regarding this...like it really moves him to sing this...
The snowflakes are beautiful, but it's so insensitive when we in the Southern Hemisphere only get snow on Christmas that one time in the nineties, though I'm uncertain as to how you'd decorate a video for a summer Christmas theme.
just close your eyes and listen to this
