And death metal and black metal have amazing lyrics, and amazing technique and style too. They make money because people like it, and growling is hard, and kickass. if it hurts, you're doing it wrong. A tiny bit of scratching sensation is OK but it should never ever hurt. You should always have a relaxed feeling in your throat when you sing. More power is not the answer, the right technique is the answer. Start off with belting (think Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin) and then build up your scream effect to be heavier and heavier. Feel free to ask.
