i think this really should have been kept in. as a kid i was always kind of confused about what was happening up until he meets augra and as an adult i still think the very beginning is kind of abrupt. i feel like this scene would have really helped the flow.
This movie was awesome, but it would've been even better if they kept the original language for the skeksis-only scenes, and had them speak the weird jumbled accented English that the Chamberlain used when talking to Jen and Kira in the middle of the movie for other parts.
lol i think i prefer going to the mystic's funeral it's more peaceful and calming the skesis i'd feel satanic lol and i wouldn't wanna touch the ex-emperor's body pieces lol
I read that the sequel was never completed because he died. But if they do make it, it won't be as good as what Hensen imagined (how could it?) but I still can't wait to see it.
I somewhat hated Jen in some ways in TDC. Is Reading and playing the flute the ONLY thing the Mystics taught him? All those years, with all their knowledge...I mean look at Kira, she know how to survive, have wings, can speak to other creatures etc.
jen is the equivalent of a kid being raised by zen buddhist monks. He's not going to have a lot to think about. Kira is the equivalent of a kid being raised by hunter-gatherers. She's going to have a lot to think about. Jen's world is sheltered. Kira's world is not. She needs to kick way more ass than him to survive.
@GioNToji Kira is the Yin. Jen is the Yang. Kira was taught the ways of nature and compassion, thanks to the Podlings. Jen was taught the ways of the scholar, reading, writing, music, math, thanks to the Mystics.
This way, they both compliment each other. Future generations of Gelflings would be taught both sides of the one coin.
...besides, as far as the wings go, you can't really help biology. Girl Gelflings always have wings. :p
I've always loved the subtly in the puppets' expressions. The hatred between SkekSil and SkekUng is papable. That brief look as they passed each other speaks volumes... And SkekSil's sneer is creepy as hell.
I wish they had kept this in the movie. The Skeksi funeral really creeps me out for some reason, and I love the transition between them yelling in their language to Jen's music.
Question, why is it in the Manga you only see ONE new mystic but two+ of the skeksis? Haven't read the Manga (don't plan on it, not a Manga person) and I haven't read the Return to the Labyrinth one either...
You know : When I look to the funerals I tend to wonder about the previous 8 Urru-Skeksis pairs that had died in the last 1000 years prior to this events !!! In the Tokyo Pop manga prequel we are intruded to 3 new characters (2 new Skeksis 1 new Mystic) ; SkekLach the Collector, his counterpart urSen the Monk (who is immediately introduced when you open the Manga) and SkekVar the General.
At the end of the Return to the Labyrith Volume 3 manga, there's a preview of the second manga of Dark Crystal. You can see a new Skeksis, not seen before. He's like of mix of SkekTek, SkekAyuk and SkekEkt
hey, there is a video called 'Trevor Jones - Funeral/Jen's Journey' on youtube that has the flute song about 2:20 into it, so its probably the start of the song 'jen's journey'. peace.
I don't think so, u can clearly see that they're both looking at the Ritual Master and he looks around as if he doesn't want the others to see what he's doing. And when he takes that thing from the Emperor's remains, he quickly tries to hide it.
I can't help but see what i think because it's what i believe to be happening :).
I saw that part as him looking around to see everybody was ready. But i do also see your idea too. He took something that does look like a ring and the Garthim Master and Chamberlain could be looking at him. After all he too was a contestant to become emperor. but it was a bit more subtle in the film. Perhaps this was one of those moments, take a ring of power to ensure he becomes emperor :).
The irony is that if his obsession with formalistic adherence to Skeksis law had actually been followed, the Skeksis would have won, because the Chamberlain would've been killed instead of banished, resulting in him not being there to stop the Garthim from killing Jen and Kira.
Watching this again reminds me of all sorts of minute details that they paid attention to but didn't mention. SkekSo's casket is triangular: so much about the world has themes of threes. His pallbearers are the three senior officers of the court: the Ritual-Master (ecclesiastical), General (military) and Chamberlain (civil). And the crooked serpent devices from his scepter at each corner are inward-looking, as the World of the Dark Crystal speculates, to contain his spirit there or something.
yeah great observations there, i did wonder why the emperors casket is triangular. Though have you read the book world of the dark crystal?. a lot of what you just said reminds me of some of the stuff written in there.
Yes, a lot of what I wrote is based on the Skeksis history in World of the Dark Crystal (WOTDC). It also reminds me that SkekSo's death is unexplained: he seems more decayed than the rest of them, but why? I think WOTDC actually urSu chose to die because he knew SkekSo would die with him, causing chaos among the chaos among the Skeksis. Again, back to three: three times three being nine, which WOTDC called a number of instability, the number of Skeksis left once their Emperor died.
omg! i was always scared of dark crystal and the labryrinth. still am. something about puppets really freaks me out. the one that really scares me is the one that comes out with the flute in this scene. i think i will always be scarred for life
Oh that's amazing! Until now i thought they won't care if one was gone, making them more of an unlikable kind. This changes my view of them entirely!!
