only problem with this setup is that your light source will be relatively close to your fish aquarium water, which case, any light that is hitting the tank will create tons of algae
@andrewprzekwas If you put the tank under the bed or next to it out of direct light it should be ok. Black paper on the walls of the tank will also help keep light out. Fish live in water that's murky so they can go without much light they just need a day night cycle which your plants will be providing. The only thing I would watch out for is the same Nitrates and trace minerals that build up and are great for plants are also deadly to fish in higher levels.
@andrewprzekwas You want to take care that you test the water for Ammonia and Nitrites (should be zero) and make sure the Nitrates don't go above 80 ppm because then your gonna risk the fish's life. That's the real key to striking that balance where the plants filter the water perfectly and use up everything and leave nothing harmful.
@qin02 Oh a Sump Tank? They are used alot of times if people have more then one grow bed or if filtering out different levels of water and require more then one at different elevations.
@Kudaimo sump.. sorry typo, i see, not completely necessary however it does help moving out the larger particularites. Need to be in differnet elevations to tank and bed.
When it reaches the right high it goes down the over flow .. but when the pump stops what happens to the water under the overflow pipe? Never seen this part expained because u would need the system to completely empty out afta each flood. Pooling water will cause root rot and also .. nasty water getting into the system thats not been cleaned propperly
@TeslaSaw We'll it starts off as a overflow but It's actually a Bell Siphon, a few seconds after the over flow a siphon action kicks in due to the head pressure and it's on until it hits air which breaks it. Siphon setups either use a groove cut out of the bottom or a air line drilled into the lid so when it hits the designated air spot (an inch from the bottom in my system) it shuts off and the pump fills it back up again. I did this animation in only a couple hours so its bit low detail lol
@luisartx09 - look up 'ram pump', you can make a small one to rise 4-6 feet of head for less than $15, and they are quite durable. Parts are readily available, too, any hardware store.
@luisartx09 It takes a bit of trial and error and a bit of frustration the first time. The way I learned was researching around on Youtube and Aquaponics forums, if I ever build a brand new one I'll try to make a video of it.

@Rocky1765 An Auto-Siphon known as a Bell Siphon, made of 3", 2" and 1" PVC pipes cut to certain heights to allow a siphon action to kick on a few seconds after the water starts over flowing.
@Kudaimo I've tried to make my own bell siphon with the least cost...I used the upper part of a mineral water bottle which is bell-shaped..and the first try was a success. It was easy, as long as we understand the concept of water pressure and auto siphon..
@duckomega Agreed, I've heard of people using 2- Liter bottles as well. Honestly if you can find cheap tanks whether Stock tanks like I use, drum barrels or even bathtubs you could probably build an Ebb and Flow system for under $100 most of which would go into your pump and media.
Why not use cattails which are already adapted to such conditions? They can simultaneously filter the water while producing food at the same time. Their pollen can replace flour, their roots can replace potatoes, their stems can be eaten raw like cucumbers, and their leaves can be weaved into containers, chair back linners, etc.
I have readed that making the right balance between quantity of fish, water and crops is not that easy and that the yelloish of the plants its for the lack of iron, it is good to add some drops to the bed (where crops are) each 2 weeks. Also you have to keep the PH of the water to 7, that is the balance between the fishes and the plants, so it's necesary to get a PH kid to meassure and keep it on 7. I want to implement it here in Panama Republic too.
@kryogeneticist I don't currently, but in the future might. Ive had a couple plants lose color and kinda die off as well. Some friends of mine were adding a diluted chilated iron mix into their grow bed to help the plants, but ended up killing almost all their fish, so if you do use any make sure you read into it carefully and remember whats good for plants might not be good for fish and visa versa. I'll let ya know if I run into any good additives.
@kryogeneticist yes you would add cal mag, if it's RO treated water. the diagram doesn't show the necessary pumps but the fish can't handle the nutes. you'd have to monitor for slat, ammonia and a few other biological functions but i like the fish and gardening concept dude, that would work well for the plants but you have to make it work for this fish to
@batfly Well I dont really sell anything but id be glad to give you advice on building one. I'm actually probably going to be adding another growbed in the coming weeks so i might make a video on how i do that.

Well it all depends how huge the fish tank is. In japan they use Koi fish for this kind of things.

What trigger/mechanism are you using to release the water every so often to completely drain back to the fish?
