  • Thanks for posting. This brings back good memories of Jake, one of the people I've treasured. I even named my 32-foot sailboat after him!

  • A real bluesman.... !!!???? He only had two strings on his guitar at any one time.. TOPS and it was always out of tune. I dont mean that as a slam...... But I grew up in Ann Arbor, and heard this guy play MANY times..... classic bluesman... please

  • @tedcantu1 You don't even need one string to play the blues. Get over yourself.

  • shakey was the truth , i wish there were more people like him

  • I remember Jake back in the early 1970's when he lived in Saginaw, Michigan. He used to hang out by the Court street bridge with his guitar

  • I worked at the Machus Grill on State & Huron. Used to see Shaky Jake all over. Ann Arbor ain't the same. R I P Jake !!

  • He was America. RIP Shakey Jake

  • ha I met shakin jake when I worked at little things in ann arbor. He played 96 tears for us.

  • Many years ago I saw Jake shoveling snow on a Sunday morning. We talked about the life and I bought him breakfast. He was a real bluesman.

  • I admit it-- I fucked him once. He fucked almost as well as he played guitar.

  • Honestly, he was born in 1925, and died (rip) in 2007

I lived near there and I met him a couple times!!!

  • Born in 1900! What a character! There's no way he was! That guy's hillarious!

  • I use to see him downtown Saginaw in the early 1960's. He must have been 82 when he passed away.

  • RIP

  • I don't think he is 82 because he had a friend that was way younger than he was

his name was Artur Thompson and when I was at Arts house shakey was there and I ask him how old are you shakey and art both said he was quite a bit older than Art and I know Art was born in 1925 Art has past now but he woulndn't tell anyone how old shakey was but he was older than him

I will miss you said HA HA HA HA baby baby

  • Man of the world Jake,

    man of the world........

  • Thanks for posting this! It was great to see Jake and Del Rio and Bagel Factory and all the great Ann Arbor icons that aren't around anymore. Rest in peace, dear Jake. Very sad.

  • It wasn't his skill in guitar, it was him in person that was so unique, it was the point that he devoted himself to love his guitar, and always had a smile on that brought happiness to others lives that was so important about him, he was caring, and always made you happy if you were sad, and even at the point where he had nothing, he played guitar to not get money, but to devote his life to help others through difficulty with his unique style of music.

  • If you are lucky enough to know when your heart is about to stop and let your body start to turn cold - you won't be wishing for time to make more money. When your time really comes, no amount of money will get you another second of life. Life is friendship and relationships - and Jake died as rich and happy as anyone! Thanks for the lesson, Jake! R.I.P.

  • I sold the Bagel Factory in 2001.. Jake was a constant, encouraging presence in the shop and in the downtown neighborhood since the early '70s. We loved his persistence, determination, his dignity and unflagging optimism. I'm proud to have 'Baked for Jake.' Rest in Peace, Shake.

  • and why the hell did you sell the bagel factory? that was the coolest place in town! I miss the fragel!

  • Greedy landlord.. Fragels are still available in town -

  • Very well done doc. there. I'd guess that was shot about 10 years ago....just a guess. I know the Bagel Factory has been closed for a while.

Ann Arbor will miss Jake. I think they should make a statue of him somewhere downtown to honor a true Ann Arbor legend.

  • R.I.P. Shakey. It was always a pleasure seeing you around town.

  • "Second line" street tribute to Jake on Sunday. Meet at Muehlig's sometime after 1 pm, bring your instrument. Route, destination, step-off time TBD. Wear your finest Jake tribute ensemble.

    On the Move!

  • Gonna miss Jake.

    What year was this please?

  • 2007! So he just died last Sunday and the funeral is this Sunday--the day after tomorrow!

  • Oh sorry, I'm an idiot--you meant what year the video was made, not when he died.

I wanna know when the video was made too.

  • Fall 1998

  • Thanks!

  • holy shit what YEAR is this? THIS doesn't look like the gentrified soul-less place ann arbor's been becoming, this looks like the OLD ann arbor!! thats the del rio! thats zola's before they went upscale! oooh, wow. . .. thank you TWICE twice then!

and yeah, he DID have a house, he sold parking spots on his front lawn saturdays for football games it was up real close to the stadium. . . .

  • thank you for being so very very cool, shakey jake- i cannot imagine ann arbor without you!!

  • Amen, Jake

  • "Baby don't cry. Tell me you love me." I think that said it all, Jake.

    Ann Arbor loves ya.

  • R.I.P. Jake. You'll be missed

  • Shakey Jake WAS Ann Arbor. The homeless prophet who spent 18 hours a day joyfully greeting strangers and turning them into beloved friends. Thank-you for sharing this beautiful video with all of us who were lucky enough to know Shakey Jake. May we all remember his lessons - love everyone you meet, don't worry about money, make all the friends you can in life, be yourself, sing your spirit, share everything you've got, and show your true colors every day of your life!

  • He had a house.

  • I looked cool in the face and Shakey Jake looked back.

  • Ann Arbor will never be the same. We'll miss you Jake!

  • R.I.P Shakey Jake
