@mrright564 I know this comment is a year old but for anyone else who is interested this theme is a traditional Irish piece called Lament For Limerick or Limerick's Lamentation. Burwell built his score around it the same way he built his score around it the same way he used traditional hymns in True Grit. Apparently Gabriel Byrne suggested it to him.

No, don't mind giving TomServo200X thumbs down because he is actually right. This piece of music is a traditional slow air called Limerick's Lamentation and because Irish trad music isn't copyrighted it was ripped off by Hollywood.

Think that you grew up in a community (of thousands) playing and listening to a certain type of music and then you hear it, & it isnt given its proper credit. That's all. This is such an amazing score and really is beautiful. I have to agree though that it probally does go better with shawshank redemption, but i guess i'm only saying that because its my favourite film. But wow, excellent score, amamzing film :)
