she sounds like she's a foreigner....like youhave to really listen to teh words to undestand her. hee hee. i love this song though and i could listen to it a hundred times.
Yes, hymns backed by an orchestra weren't always her strong-suit; too structured. But this album ("Mahalia Jackson - A Mighty Fortress") as a whole is quite good.
@1joker88 I agree and yes she was wonderful on this album. Over a long time, I have come to accept this as one of her finest challenges. It was difficult for Mahalia, but the product is magnificent, especially "Be Still My Soul."
@Billinindiana Indispuputably great. I love this album, albeit later in her career. It's extremely soulful and her voice is great. I agree, "Be Still My Soul" has wonderfully fantastic qualities of beauty. Her final verse: listen to the word "Soul" as she belts it out. Really amazing. Recorded in 1968, she gave it her best, and her producer even commented "she's back again [after a long period of illness], strong, singing . . . "

She was that rare gem of a singer that made you think she might have been a diva...but wasn't a diva, and didn't sing like a diva. She sang every hymn like one was supposed to, but still sang it in a way that made you go, "THAT right thar is Ms. Mahalia. Don't forget it!" However, it's a shame that I've never met her. I'm 35 and she died before I was born. Worse is none of my MUCH older sisters never heard of her!
