@dressshoeguy Oh, yes, yes, yes, the best beetle commercial ever. I would love to know who was the voice actor for the deceased. This must have been late 1960s or early 1970s. I do know that I bought a beetle, probably influenced by this stellar commercial...and had it for 23 years.... Cool, totally, undeniably, cool. And, I was young when I saw this ad... Now I am no longer young, but am glad to see this again---it is a real hoot!
lol I'm guessing he spent it on either his actor's union dues or on gas for the drive to and from Ft. Bragg. He was active duty at the time and on leave for the shoot.
i completely disagree with the meaning of this commercial. what good is money to you after you die? you cant take it with you so enjoy it while you can.
@frenchylexi i don`t want to be mean or anything but are you a working person? do you have someone to support with money? i mean, if you work for it, trust me, you will feel hurt to see those people spending like no tomorrow. i guess it`s about the lack of respect they show to your hard work. after all the commercial didn`t say that the dead man didn`t enjoy the fruits of his work, he just resented the people that turned to leeches around him. no harm intended
@frenchylexi sometime you gotta take what you can get i assume that no matter how cheap and low class beetle is it still look like a luxury ride if you paint it with metallic paint. So the commercial mean if you buy it you can buy tons of classy 1910 table refrigator mabye sofa and the TV any classy thing to fit the beetle first production years.
@frenchylexi And it would have been better if you donate all the money to orphans insted spending all at once since you cant enjoy anymore when you think
It's true. I've seen it in the past a few times on those "greatest commercials" programs, of which he still receives royalties after all these years. But it's quite a trip to find it here on Youtube.
The commercial was created by Mr.Bert Steinhauser at the DDB advertising agency. Mr. Bert Steinhauser created many of the VW and Porsche commercials. The best creative men ever!
Too bad this clip is cut - it's missing the most important line!
...Finally to my nephew Harold, who oft time said, "a penny saved is a penny earned," and who also oft time said, "Gee Uncle Max, it sure PAYS TO DRIVE A VOLKSWAGEN!," I leave my entire fortune of 100 billion dollars.

James Carville once noted that Republicans never buy foreign cars, and that for some reason, they don't consider German cars to be foreign.

That voiceover.. Was that the same voice as used for the "Mr.Magoo" cartoons??
Skoda130 4 years ago
I wish I knew...
beetlejuice150 4 years ago
It surely sounds like him... Haven't you noticed the similarity?
Skoda130 4 years ago
Certainly not Mr Magoo (voice of Jim Backus), but definitely a cartoonist voice, maybe the voice of Snidely Whiplash or someone similar.
trickyt123 4 years ago
Magoo=Jim Backus
Whiplash=Hans Conried
It is definitely NOT Mr. Conried. Do a search here for him or Fractured Flickers, and you'll see and hear.
spsmyth 3 years ago
@Skoda130 "Mr Magoo" was voiced by Jim Backus. He also played the character Thurston Howell III in the 60s TV sitcom "Gilligan's Island"
