  • Ddb had balls.

  • to my wife rose who spent money like there was no tomorrow i leave 100$ and a calendar..hahahhahaha! lol

  • What's the missing part cut out, after "Gee Uncle Max, it sure--" ???

  • @rpresser "it sure pays to own a volkswagon" or something like that

  • @rpresser "Gee Uncle Max, it sure pays to own a Volkswagen."

  • @rpresser I want to know too

  • OMG, I had almost forgotten this commercial. It is my favorite of all time.

  • what year is this?

  • This is by far my favorite commercial for the Beetle.

  • @dressshoeguy Oh, yes, yes, yes, the best beetle commercial ever. I would love to know who was the voice actor for the deceased. This must have been late 1960s or early 1970s. I do know that I bought a beetle, probably influenced by this stellar commercial...and had it for 23 years.... Cool, totally, undeniably, cool. And, I was young when I saw this ad... Now I am no longer young, but am glad to see this again---it is a real hoot!

  • i've never been proud to be a vw owner!!!

  • To my Business partner Judes, Who olny is SPANK SPANK SPANK! I leave NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING!

  • lol I'm guessing he spent it on either his actor's union dues or on gas for the drive to and from Ft. Bragg. He was active duty at the time and on leave for the shoot.

  • This is a beautiful video :)

  • the key line of the ad is cut out: "gee Uncle Max, it sure pays to own a Volkswagen."

and FYI the name is Maxwell E. Snavely

  • i wish i was his nephew...

i spend the lot on beetles!

  • "...gee uncle Max, it's your penny"

  • 0:48

I didn't quite catch what he said... "Chee o ko maxisure" ???

  • This is my favorite commercial of ALL times! Thanks for posting!

  • Black VW bug, red interior.......priceless.

  • Funny to know that Volkswagen owns Rolls-Royce today !

  • @clitomaniac

vw owns bentley, not RR, RR is owned by BMW

  • BRILLIANT COMMERCIAL

  • those were some sick cars

  • i completely disagree with the meaning of this commercial. what good is money to you after you die? you cant take it with you so enjoy it while you can.

  • @frenchylexi i don`t want to be mean or anything but are you a working person? do you have someone to support with money? i mean, if you work for it, trust me, you will feel hurt to see those people spending like no tomorrow. i guess it`s about the lack of respect they show to your hard work. after all the commercial didn`t say that the dead man didn`t enjoy the fruits of his work, he just resented the people that turned to leeches around him. no harm intended

  • @frenchylexi sometime you gotta take what you can get i assume that no matter how cheap and low class beetle is it still look like a luxury ride if you paint it with metallic paint. So the commercial mean if you buy it you can buy tons of classy 1910 table refrigator mabye sofa and the TV any classy thing to fit the beetle first production years.

  • @frenchylexi Also! You never know when you will die so spend like a normal people not once goe to 0$

  • @frenchylexi And it would have been better if you donate all the money to orphans insted spending all at once since you cant enjoy anymore when you think

"Oh my god, im gonna die next week!"

  • What a classic spot! I dig the Lincoln limousine that's in front of the vW, cool!

  • lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Who did the voice-over for this?

  • Yes it pays to own a Volkswagen Beetle, which is still popular to this day both the newest and the original.

  • adorable! the part that skips out is, "Gee Uncle Max, it sure pays to own a Volkswagen"

  • um crying in tears

  • @mofunzonecom

    UM CRYING IN BLUD! WAAAAA

  • wow this add is in my English text book

  • @dashizl lol thats how i found this ad from my txt book

  • I do!

  • poor car

  • Everyone who spends got owned. lol

    Beetles rule.

  • @Ryoukun16 tats right

  • Hi! I m italian and I don't understand everything of the spot... Is there someone VERY very kind that could write the text??!! Pleaseeee... THANKS!

  • Yes.

For my wife, only $100 dollars

    For my sons, $15

    To my bussiness friend, nothing

To all my others friends, $1

And to my nephew, the beetle guy, my entire fortune of one billion dollars. (10,000,000)

    It's something like that.

  • you for got the calender and $15 in dimes

  • SO if I buy a bettle i become a billionare? lol

  • thats right screw the rest them bastards

  • My favorite ad..classic Doyle, Dane, Bernbach

  • BERNBACH is the best

  • This commercial is funny, creepy, disturbing. Yeah it's modern! LOL!

  • If anybody wonders what the true meaning of beind a conservative is, look no further than his nephew Harold. :)

  • James Carville once noted that Republicans never buy foreign cars, and that for some reason, they don't consider German cars to be foreign.

  • They were made in Mexico, so it was okay, cuz mexicans are liek americans, except with big hats.

  • I'm Mexican, and I don't use a big mexican hat.

  • you have to get one!

  • Video is cutting out, but it says "Gee uncle Mac, it sure pays to drive a Volkswagen".

  • This ad was shown during an episode of that 70's show called fez dates Donna on Fox in 2001.

  • It's true. I've seen it in the past a few times on those "greatest commercials" programs, of which he still receives royalties after all these years. But it's quite a trip to find it here on Youtube.

  • That guy playing "Rodney" -- the son with the dark glasses -- that's my dad ! :o

  • @ rumrunner:

Is that really true or are you joking..?

  • @rumrunner777 So what did your dad do with those fifty dollars in dimes?

  • you skipped a part near the end, when the nephew says, "It sure pays to have a Volkswagen." this was in my sophomore textbook. XD

  • yeah, what's with the weird editing? did the cia intervene and censor this ad? because the cia intervened in everything in the 60's

  • Awesomeness!

  • That voiceover.. Was that the same voice as used for the "Mr.Magoo" cartoons??

  • I wish I knew...

  • It surely sounds like him... Haven't you noticed the similarity?

  • Certainly not Mr Magoo (voice of Jim Backus), but definitely a cartoonist voice, maybe the voice of Snidely Whiplash or someone similar.

  • Magoo=Jim Backus

    Whiplash=Hans Conried

It is definitely NOT Mr. Conried. Do a search here for him or Fractured Flickers, and you'll see and hear.

  • @Skoda130 "Mr Magoo" was voiced by Jim Backus. He also played the character Thurston Howell III in the 60s TV sitcom "Gilligan's Island"

  • @Djinnjaha Thanks for the info! :-)

  • @Skoda130 No, I'm sure it's not Jim Backus!

  • @VentrueCapital Why? The similarity is perfect.

  • @Skoda130 No, that was Jim Backus who also played Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island!

This sounds nothing like Jim Backus!

  • The commercial was created by Mr.Bert Steinhauser at the DDB advertising agency. Mr. Bert Steinhauser created many of the VW and Porsche commercials. The best creative men ever!

  • Definatly the best advert ever, snd so true, I drive a beetle.... we're great people beetle drivers...

  • This is VW´s best commercial ! I love it!

  • Thats even a lot of money by today's standards as well. This one is my favourtite.

  • Pure genius.

  • One of the best commercials ever.

Too bad this clip is cut - it's missing the most important line!

...Finally to my nephew Harold, who oft time said, "a penny saved is a penny earned," and who also oft time said, "Gee Uncle Max, it sure PAYS TO DRIVE A VOLKSWAGEN!," I leave my entire fortune of 100 billion dollars.

  • You're right. Luckily on the DVD Legend on wheels this clip the phrase 'pays to drive a volkswagen' is not missing.

  • Yep!!! Me too!

  • I'd rather have had one of those Lincolns.

  • Very well said

  • Best... Commercial... EVER!

  • I agree. This one is the best!!!!
