If things only worked out differently: Jay never got The Tonight Show..he could've rode the wave of his legend from the 80's and secured his spot as one of the best comedians of our time.
Watching this clip--you remember how great Leno used to be...vivid story telling and funny anecdotes...what he did best when he was on Letterman's old NBC show. I don't even know if Leno can even be this funny anymore.
Man, watching Leno just highlights to me how overrated American chat show hosts are as comedic minds lmao.
Letterman has a laid-back sarcastic class about him, Conan is a student of comedy, and experimental and genuine...
Leno is just irritating though. An observation about the hot water tap not staying on long enough? that would be maybe a few seconds of mild, pointless chit-chat with a friend when coming back from the bathroom.
After watching this where Leno is kind of funny, I can only conclude that he was castrated at some point. He's so "safe" now it's ridiculous. And not like his comedy was that un-PC in the first place either.
You'll notice that Conan is the only one laughing. Out of awkward pity for Jay's dead stories. But that was Leno's schtick years ago. He was a storyteller who had loooooooooong set ups to better punchlines than here. Today's audiences would never have patience for that approach.
@RetroBoyWontDie Funny how that must have worked in the 80s as you can find clips of Jay and Dave and that worked very well in the ratings and he got the Tonight Show in the end. All the silly bsahing is just comical at this point.
Leno is passed it now. Conan is all about the future of comedy... he's progressive. Jay Leno is old school. Revolutions are never smooth and I really do think Conan's style of comedy is revolutional.
This is painful to watch. They seem so adoring of each other and Leno took his career over a friendship, at 61 years old nonetheless. Leno doesn't even have that much longer in a comedy career and he completely and seemingly effortlessly stabbed Conan in the back. Even in this interview it's clear that conan has more comedical potential without even trying. Nothing personal it's just talent you're born with.
@DesQueJteVois Hey u would do the same thing if u been offred to stay and do it for a pay check of 35000000000$ a year means more than 150000000 a mounth so dont blame the guy its all business plus talent.
Actually, this is almost painful to watch, if only for the fact that you can see how well these two get along and like each other--and Leno quite happily threw that away.
you're half right, it's not bad to like leno, he's a funny guy. but you're wrong because it is leno's fault. he personally gave the green light for conan to take over the tonight show. he's directly responsible for it being cancelled due to the jay leno show's bad lead-in ratings, and it was his personal decision to take the tonight show back instead of sticking up for conan and giving him another chance on NBC. leno doesn't have a manager, he did all of this on his own, with no outside help.
@ohwello i guess you've NEVER changed your mind after making a decision , would you leave your job if you loved your job? Leno is not at all to blame NBC botched the whole thing from start to finish
If all you Conan fans had watched the show like you did after it was announced the show was ending they wouldn't have made that announcement
@policeeatdoughnuts all i have to say is there's a gigantic difference between a mundane decision and one that permanently changes the lives of hundreds of people. (yes, hundreds, including all of leno and conan's staff). NBC plays a huge part in the incident, but to say that Jay Leno is not at all to blame is just ignorant.
@ohwello a lot people make changes everyday that effect tens or hundreds of people , in 2004 Leno said he would retire, 5 years later he wanted to keep doing his show. Jay didn't make any of the network decisions he agreed to do whatever NBC wanted
as a fan of Jay and Conan i wish they would have left Jay at 10pm and Conan at 1130pm
I wish they would have left Leno at 11:30 and Conan at 12:30. What in the world is so lowly about hosting a television show that airs after midnight? It pays millions of dollars!
@joekiddlouischama Leno's ratings were sucking for more than seven months after he took over for Carson. He was given the chance that Conan didn't get, and he became a wrench in the new Tonight Show's works with his own show.
You could say just as easily that Conan threw it away in 2004 when he accepted a deal that essentially forced Leno out of "The Tonight Show." In reality, they both basically did the same thing to each other, but Leno did it publicly.
@leroyinc from what i heard leno promised or agreed to give conan the tonight show iafter a period of 5 years, and when the 5 years passed he didnt keep his promise, thats why kimmel made fun of him, and rosie o donnel said that it was a crappy thing to do and she gave an example of a truck driver, it maybe weird but...
@valicenti07 Conan got the Tonight show and Leno got to do a show before Conan. Except Leno's show was so bad that noone would stay to watch Conan. So NBC wanted to put Leno on at 1030 and push The Tonight show back a half hour. Conan didn't think it was right to punish his show and help Leno's show when it was Leno's fault the ratings were bad. So Conan left and Leno got his show back
@juffan that makes it a bit clearer for me couse, not all the news come to argentina, so there was a part of the problem that i didnt know, thanks. conan was right, because leno's rating were bad they had to change HIS schedule, that is lame for both nbc and leno
@leroyinc NBC was the one that brought that deal to the table, not Conan. He would have easily went somewhere else if NBC wasn't so keen on keeping him away from other networks.
@CamilleNadia Unfortunately Bill Carter suggests that these two men never really did like each other. They didn't hate each other, and they were always on good terms really, but Conan never did particularly care for Jay, and Jay never really understood Conan's humor.
Their both funny
