Having just watched the Kentucky Derby yesterday, I decided to "visit" Barbaro. I enjoyed this video. The song captures the story well. He was, indeed, a fighter to the end & inspired us all with that spirit. YOU'RE A CHAMPION BARBARO - always will be! You'll never be forgotten. THANK YOU FOR POSTING.
thnks i always wanted to hear something about Barbaro and this is awesome!!!when i first heard it, i cried.bravo great job..!(could you send me the lyrics of the song?)
My boy I still remember you and the 29th of Jan will always be on my mind.I love you and always will and we will be together again riding golden race tracks someday.I will never forget you.
If there was something more to show Barbaro how much he meant to us, we would do it. When they say "Barbaro, strutting his stuff" everyone knows that, its Barbaro's signature on racing. He will always be in our hearts, Barbaro we love you and miss you, may you live on in your brothers. Rest In Peace big boy
im a fan of fillies (rachel alexandra, zenyatta, eight belles, ruffian..) and i luv it when they win but i luv geldings and stallions just the same and i LUVED barbaro! i started busting out crying when i saw it on the news that he was dead
It is so sad that he has to die so young (for a regular horse, not a racehorse), at only like 4 years old. He was my favoirte racehorse (along w/ Zenyatta). Amazing. This vid. and song brought tears to my eyes. :[
:'( that was beautiful! I think it was ironic that yesterday Mine That Bird was number 8 and a long shot and won the Derby and Barbaro was number 8. Ironic Much?
thats exactly wat i thought. i said to my mom, Mine That Bird is going to win. and she said y hes a huge longshot. and i said its cuz hes in the 8 position and that was barbaro's position
I never assumed Mine That Bird though, But the 8th position, almost 3 years later... pretty Ironic to me. I dont think his brothers will be anything like him though, no matter even if they are full blood all horses have different personalities. He was a real one in a million. a Fighter and a Runner. He loved to run
Barbaro was a phenomenal racehorse and yet, his strength, his determination showed during his stay at New Bolton...and his energy carries on even now...
Like music, but something is missing about the song... I don't know what.... All of your other songs are great, too... Especialy Ruffian, my favorite horse... Like your voice, beautiful sad voice... When will we have pleasure to hear your song about Phar Lap? :-)
Barbaro was a great horse, one of my favorites. This video is great and just by watching it you know what a champion he was. I wish he had won the TC. He was the right kind of horse. He had heart, talent, and that thing you can't explain which makes a champion a champion. I WANT BARBARO BACK!!!!
i loved barbaro soooo much, its so sad that hes gone........
you really did do a great job showing how great of a horse he was.
....i made a video about him but im thinking about remaking it cause its not that good, could you tell me where you got your clips from?, cause i can't find any anywhere...
a great video for a great horse, everything in this song rings truth. Barbaro was a fighter till the end. im crying right now, a great video. Barbaro is probably running in the lush green fields of heaven with Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Ruffian, Man O' War and all of the other great racehorses who have passed away.
I always watch this vid, as often as possible. This is one of the most beautiful and touching Barbaro videos I've ever seen. Also, I /never/ cry when I watch a video, but your video, made me cry, and still makes me cry, every single time I watch it. It's beautiful. Please continue honoring great horses with your voice and touching videos.
thank you so much for the beautiful, amazing songs you write. your videos are my favourite on youtube. the one you made about Ruffian about broke my heart - and this one.... goodness, i'm crying. i'm not even american and never really followed or knew about these wonderful, beautiful horses... so again, thank you.
this song is soo great you are a good singer this song matches the vidoe barbaro was a true champion who fullfilled everybody's dream andd lived life to the full he was unbeatable and always will be..noone will never the forget this true young gentlemen.
i really wanted to see Barbaro be undefeated, grow old and be a successful sire of many winners. But everything happens for a reason. RIP Barbaro! We love you! ♥♥♥♥♥♥
I love the song and I love that you wrote it! It really fit the video. Where did you get the clips? I favorited this one right after I watched it. Thanks for sharing this video with us and Barbaro really was a "Fighter to the end"!
thanks for posting this video about Barbaro. it is sad that laminates took his life, taking him too soon from all of us. i have worked with a few thoroughbred race horses (retired) and they have the heart to keep going until they drop, but those the horses touch, especially ones like Barbaro, will never die because we will remember him forever.
great video. everytime i think or see something about Barbaro, i feel like crying. he's always been one of my favorites. Secretariat, Man O War, Affirmed, Seabiscuit, and Phar Lap, in my opinion, he tops them all (as far as favoritism). i just wish he would've won the triple crown.
It's sick how long they waited, no matter what they said. It was pure selfishness! The poor thing fought it out, even though they now think that he actually did suffer! I would have put him down on the spat, which i did with my old horse.
No its not sick that horse had so much heart and tryed and they cared so much they wanted him around and "spat" i think you mean spot!?! if he wanted to go he woulkd of quit fighting.
oh by the way if that happend to my horse id try everything to save them.
i liked the song a lot, but i think if a girl sang it, with a softer more femanin voice, i think that would complete it, also a slower toon! but anyways, about barbaro! i think that horse had more heart then any horse i have EVER seen. RIP.
This is a beautiful tribute to an equally as beautiful horse...I'm sitting here with my Riding With Barbaro bracelet which I've been wearing at least 6 times a week, on the verge of tears. I was a Barbaro fan, before he won the Derby, even after he got injured, even after he was put down. And I always will be a fan. RIP Barbaro.
That is an amazing song...it brought tears to my eyes. It's been awhile since I thought about Barbaro, and this reminded me of how much strength and heart he had.
I'm from Australia and obviously don't know the horse but i know how a champion can grab the hearts of a whole nation... We lost one of our horses to a race injury in April, this certainly brought back the tears! Beautiful tribute, great video, beautiful song.
Barbaro was AWESOME! he could have proved he was one of the greatest...and he was. but i think that was meant to happen, b/c he inspired a lot of people w/ his fight for life
I just love this video. He truly was a fighter till the end and I wish he could ahve kept fighting. I loove your videos and your songs for the horses, they are awesome and all of them fit the horses very well
Never saw this video until 2 months later, but thoroughly enjoyed it--a reminder of this horse's greatness. Though he left this earth too early, he will always live as a champion in our hearts.
I've got quite a few on my list of possibilities already, and from start to finish, each new one could take months, but I won't rule anything out either. :^)
Many thanks. Yep, that's me. I have my own personal 16 track recorder that I use to help make these. Nope, not on American Idol, at 53, I'm way too old, LOL
I have always known that Barbaro was a SOAL with a BODY and when his BODY wouldn't run, I knew his SOAL always would. God has gates in Heaven and his SOAL is still running. He is running passed the Angels and the white clouds. Running with the champions that had run before him, and having a great time doing it, too. Barbaro, I LOVE YOU! RIP FOREVER!
I love it! Thanks for the video, this video made me feel better about his passing, until i saw the golden name plate with his name engraved on it, than i started to cry.
I've been waiting for this video to get posted... If his bone had to break, I wish it hadn't been right in front of the grandstands. Poor Barbaro, had everybody right there watching him as his race continued on. Anybody who has raced horses knows that they have feelings, pride, and get disappointed in themselves...I'm sure his heart was breaking.
In an age where every artist seems to display rottenness, where the anti-virtues are praised, I thank you. You tapped something deep within me at the 4:30 mark - inspiration, tragic melancholia, nobility, virtue, spirit, hope all meld into tears that are welcomed!
Excellent work. Despite all that happened after it certainly brings a huge smile to see that fantastic champion make the final turn at Churchill Downs and find a gear that others could only dream of...
Many thanks! While I've never owned a Thoroughbred, I've owned horses since 1974. During that time, I've lost a few myself, and I can attest, first hand, it's never easy.
Well done. The video footage you used was beautiful, with the exception of the Preakness, which just breaks my heart, and which I can't watch anymore. And don't forget, Barbaro was loved, not just "across America" but also across the whole world. The last image you used of Barbaro is how I will always remember our sweet and magnificent Kentucky Derby champion.
Actually, it's a six string banjo, which is tuned to standard guitar tuning. In this case, it's capoed up two frets. They are sometimes called banjitars. I used it in my Lost In The Fog song/video as well.
Banjo! Right. Why couldn't I remember that (I kept thinking of the scene in Deliverance, but for some reason the word 'banjo' was just outta reach in my mind! Anyway, I really like your banjitar work in this one; it's appropriately moving; deep, if you will. I would love to pick your brain sometime on the process you use.
I have no set process. This song actually started with the chord progression for the chorus, and the words "a fighter to the end" were not the original words I started with. He was still alive when I started the song, and the original words were "still beating all the odds." I use a 16 track personal recorder, and play all the instruments except the drums, which are computer generated. I even transfer the race calls to the 16 track, so I can balance the volume on the mix down.
Man, I wish I understood how to use all that stuff so that I could better balance the mix on my stuff for SECRETARIAT; I'm literally in the stone age with the equipment I have. I think your choice of "a fighter to the end" works very well!
Although I've never used them, there are computer programs that can accomplish the same thing, as long as you have enough hard drive space available. Such a program will have a screen with several "tracks" that you can record individually, with individual volume, EQ, pan, reverb, etc., for each that can be mixed down into 2 stereo tracks.

Many thanks! While I've never owned a Thoroughbred, I've owned horses since 1974. During that time, I've lost a few myself, and I can attest, first hand, it's never easy.

Thank you, Barbaro deserved a song. Well done.

See what you started, LOL. If I wouldn't have discovered your 'Ruffian Movie' I probably never would have started making these.

Good song; I really liked the guitar work (is that a ukelelee?).

Super homage. "A fighter to the end." Indeed.

Sadly, the words I started with were "still beating all the odds" which I had to change after his passing.

That is sad, but you know he beat lots of long odds in his time here -- maybe not the longest of those but he proved what a fighter really is.
