FYI, I just did a quick background research on the film. Most of the main actors portraying Tajiks are actually Uighurs because the director couldn't find so many Tajik actors in China during that time. The actor portraying Amir, for example, is a Uighur volleyball player.

There is no such thing as Eastern Turkistan. The term Turkistan is a misnomer of the time of Colonialista map makers. Turks and Tukistan belong way up north - in the plains of northern Kazakstan and Southern Siberia. There slit eyes is for the tundra climate of those parts.

They are a people whom belong in the steppes of Mongolia and Northern Kazakstan. That is where their physiology comes from. The denotation of Turkistan for anything south of the Aral Sea - Tiang Shan Mountains is a big misnomer.

Uyghurs have had several stong kingdoms and impires in the past in Central Asia, during this time Numbers of Tajiks, Parsions, Russions, Mongols and Chinese were assimilated by Uyghurs. Tajik language is part of Indo-European languages and Uyghur language is part of Turkish languages. Eastern Turkistan was occupied by China in 1949 at the same time that Tibet was occupied .Then the Chinese killed 10s of thousands of Uyghur scholars. Then tehy recruted not educated beggers and poor people as officals of Chinese government.They Chinese is still doing that.
