It is a bit odd to scramble a Mach2+ Lightning to go chase a UFO that was flying at 1500 feet and only doing 160 knots. Towards the end of the Radio conversation he had to slow his plane down and had to make some manoevres to scrub some speed off and then nothing was heard again. Their is not much mention of his wingman either. I think this was a geniune crash but the mystery is where did Captain Schaffner go?. His family have concluded that he was lost at sea. So I will agree with them
Wow, what did they tell Schaffner's family? I regret to inform you that your son has been abducted by aliens and we never found him. Talk about embarassment and disbelief!
Seems to be a rather mystic story, since nothing about is even included in the past release of MODs entire archives of UFO files into the public domain.
007 Thunderball? i.e If the a/c was sent to intercept a "UFO" from Quick Reaction Alert then it would have been armed with missiles????? Who nicked them??
Hi. I actually work in one of the hangars up on the airfield. You can go up on the air base near the hangars and see the aircraft behind a fence but not actually get up close to it as its part of the lighting association and the 460 memorial. Its not looking too bad but could do with a clean though.
This incident seems to coincide with a sighting that my dad had in 1970,it was also seen and pursued by two police officers in the merseyside area. The description of the ufo seems to match so does the year and the month, not to sure about the date.I have often wondered if my dads sighting was linked to this incident.
This guy says that the pilot pulls the pan handle , if it fails he pulls the top handle, both of these are for seat ejection not manual release of the canopy.
Maybe he DITCHED the a/c in the sea after whatever technical fault had manifested, (thats not described), THEN he exited the A/c WITHOUT ejecting (jettison) the canopy, I'm thinking there has been some confusion between the statement of Ejecting and Ejecting the canopy. I'm guessing that the pilot was simply lost at sea without his raft etc? Its possible the pilot opened the canopy manually, climbed (swam) out and then the water pressure forced the canopy closed again? What do you think?
well another article i read about the incident stated that the canopy was open when the crash happened and the pilot was still in. But when recovery was sent out to get the a/c from sea bed the canopy was shut and locked with no pilot. also a lot of the guages were missing. Check RAF Binbrook Lighning Mystery on google and look for the: Captain Schaffner story Binbrook 1970's(Merged thread)
I guess some one got to him before the recovery team, I wonder how long it was before they found the a/c? I used to dive with a club and I know they were a bit naughty sometimes. Any time scales been published?
Mind you, I wouldnt want to mess with a live a/c , (too many things can bite you until its made safe for servicing) and taking the instruments out was hard enough even on dry land in a hangar.
qra hanger across from the tower. I was there with dunc martin, my radar fittler, when he went. 5 and 111 squadron were always hotdogging each other, and of course, taking the sap out of 85 sqn, that flew canberra and meteors.
we never saw that canadian again, the raf police were very quickly in grsf under the tower, and nicked all the tapes,
just a thought,
im retired now, so the official secrests act doesnt apply at my age hopefully,
just to reiterate, the lightnings were tied down on the pan alongside the tower, anty pilot wishing to take off would have to go round the peri track and like up into the wind on the runway in use.
i have studied this story on numerous occasions. they say they was a defence cover up because when the plane was returned to binbrook some of the instruments had been removed even though the cockpit was intact.
This incident should have made the headlines around the world. The poor pilot, was he killed? Abducted? Is he alive in an Alien holding cell on some distant planet? Weird! Most likely he died when he ejected, but it makes you wonder. The plane was intact when seen by witnesses so,...

So many stories of this accident around .
Did speak to the pilots son once many years ago.
Such a shame they demolished the tower back in 95.
Have vivid memories of the inside but plenty of pics of the outside.
Would love to hear from anyone who was based at Raf Binbrook or in the tower.

Well if you think about it this is teleportation.
I have seen on youtbue the 'orbs' beings 'hit by lightning' when infact they've been beemed up.
The defence would be a null field against lightning or electrical energy.
Design Null fields like rubber.
I have also seen UFO use electrical energy against a proxy warhead.

Seems to be a conflict between ditching and ejecting....which was it? Obviously not ejecting as they say the canopy was still secured????
tvfilmglamdirector 3 years ago
he said the ejection failed..
