What you are showing is not a Ceremonial. It is an Honor Guard, running through a few very basic drills in preparation for the day when they will be called upon to do it for a public event. While the Sir Knights are not bad, it is clear to me as a PFN that they need to practice and learn to work better as a cohesive unit.
@DeedsResearcher Thank you for the clarification. Although this is not a formal ceremonial, and they are running basic drills, by all accounts, they are doing so at a regional competition. This was noted on the film reel cover given to me by my aunt. I asked her for clarification, and she told me they my uncle's council had gone up to Ukiah, California to take part in a regional drill competition with other councils. The date is uncertain, but is likely somewhere between 1978 and 1982.
@lunarparcel Just to clarify a bit more: Councils do not send Honor guards to any sort of Drill competitions. That is done by Fourth Degree Assemblies. While 4th Degree Knights must also be members of Councils, their Councils really have no say in Fourth Degree matters.
By the way, the time frame you suggested was before I even joined the Order, so I have next to no knowledge of what went on during that time frame.
@DeedsResearcher Thank you. that actually clears up some other stuff I hadn't realized. When I used to belong to a local council ( and remained so up through 3rd degree), I recall a number of events for which 4th degree members partook as Color Guard, but such orchestration was not handled through the council itself. So your insight regarding that makes much more sense. Thanks again.
@lunarparcel In most Assemblies, they wait for others (such as the Council) to request an Honor Guard. When I became Faithful Navigator, I felt it would be a good idea to offer our services. When a highly respected 3rd Degree member passed away, I offered the Honor Guard for the Wake and Funeral. The family was especially thankful, and a couple of them wound up joining the Order. That was not expected, and we were happy to have served at the Wake. A grieving family does not always think to ask.
@lunarparcel HOW DO YOU GUYS CONTINUE TO USE AND HONOR THE NME OF COLUMBUS WHO WAS A VERY BAD PERSON......MAKES NO SENSE......IGNORANCE IS BLISS!!!!!!
@migo53333 Thank you for your commentary on the nature of ignorance. In response, let me elucidate for you with reference to your post. Yes, the mythology of Columbus is not in accord with the true nature of his reportedly despicable character. I did not post in order to honor his name or even that of the Knights - I am no longer a member. I cancelled my membership years ago for personal reasons. I posted this video due to its being a notable part of our family media archives. And that is all.
One thing that strikes me as odd in this video is that there are so many FNs and/or PFNs and comparatively so few red capes. Maybe it's just the camera angle or something.
@TorontoJediMaster I don't consider that odd. My own Assembly routinely has as many or more white capes than reds at Wakes, Masses and Parades. Until recently, nobody had ever served more than one year as FN. Our Assembly also would buy each new FN his white cape IF he turned his red cape in to the Assembly. Over the years we've been able to build up a supply of capes for emergency use. It would be nice if all Assemblies did the same.
Yeah, I know about Assemblies buying and providing white capes. The Assembly I belong to is only about five years old (I'm approaching my two-year anniversary as a 4th Degree SK myself), and we only have 3 PFN's, not to mention the current one. And one of our PFN's had been a Marshall but has recently been promoted to Master. So, I guess I'm not used to seeing that many white capes at one time.
The issue that tips the scales in the final analysis is the fact that Catholic Parishes are in dire need of money. And most Catholic parishoners are strapped for funds.
It's a sin to see an independent organization piggy backing on their parishes to skim some of this needed money away.
Especially when it is a haven for a group of underhanded good ole boys who run things and milk the good intentions of those who are made to be permanently subservient. This, not pleasing to the Eye of God!
It's a racket, and those proud peacocks in pretty colors aren't humble servants of God. Their Rich arrogant good ole boys in an ego contest. The Knights milks money from the Parishes and Dioscese and sends it to New Haven.
each council member is assessed a modest amount annually part of which goes to the supreme council, the state, and the rest goes to the council's projects. fund-raising activities are done for specific reasons duly approved by the council members and in consultation with the church and local authorities.
The KofC is secretive in nature, and very non-committal in writing of what is accepted and what isn't. This allows them to make up rules as they go.
And they operate under selective observation, selective criterion, selective levels of deferrence and consideration depending on the level of prestige of the individual in total disregard for God's law and the golden rule.
The KofC does a lot of good things, but it needs a major tune up, and better accountability for its so called human nature.
@GermBritScotsIrish15 apparently you need meds to mitigate your rage. If you're defending a phony organization that spends a million dollars per day to buy respect, you're efforts are misplaced... both ethically and spiritually.
@dirtbagcatholics BALONEY! I'm a Fourth Degree Knight, a Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator, and Former District Deputy. I can assure you that I am most definitely not rich by any definition of that word.
It sounds like you need to...blah blah blah is a cute pat defense..
I have direct personal observation to the contrary.
And as a soldier of God, I recommend that we go nuts to provide mutual accountability...because I see the Knights as milking their prestige to be a powerful big shot's club.
in any council, there are members who are better off that others and there are those whose personalities are more pleasing than others. councils are viewed differently depending on where they are and what they do. unfortunately, some councils do better than others.
@primoabruzzi Skims? You may be talking about your local mafia, but that is NOT how the K of C operates. Every dime is fully accounted for, both at the Council level and at the Supreme Council level in New Haven. We have earned the highest possible ratings from AM Best & Company as well as Standard & Poors.
By the way, sonny, where were YOU on 9/12/01? That's not a typo. I'm talking about the day after the 9/11 attacks.
The KofC provides opportunity for sin in there are individuals and groups who are geared to egotistical dominance and play dirty to be the owners either as individuals or as members of cliques.
And it isn't unusual for individuals who are productive and maintain outstanding relationships in the Church at large, or the community at large to be back stabbed and labeled negatively to justify their subjugate status.
The KofC is a glofified racket operating in Jesus' Name!
@primoabruzzi Pardon me, but just who the HELL are YOU to make that charge? I'm a 4th Degree Sir Knight, a Past Faithful Navigator and a Past Grand Knight, as well as a Former District Deputy. Until the day comes when you see us from the inside, I'd suggest you do one thing: shut up! You are speaking out of ignorance of all the facts, sonny.
In my opinion the Diocese, Archdiocese, and Parish level Church will find that the Knights of Columbus can better be replaced by Men's Clubs at the Parish level.
In most Knights of Columbus councils, the parish priest is an officer of the council and has access to records for all financial dealings of the council. The priest also provides direction to the council in it's activities. All councils are self sufficient and do not receive money from the parish. In fact, it is commonly the other way around.
It sounds like you need to do some homework on what the Knights of Columbus is all about.
@TAlan0962 Only Priests may serve as Chaplains of our Councils. The position of Chaplain is indeed an officer-level position. However, he does not run the Council by any stretch of the imagination.
no replacing is needed. the KofC is an independent organization. it is not under the church. however, it helps the church and the community out of funds that come mainly from its members.
And any and all expenditures, and profits from the clambakes, auctions, spaghetti dinners..etc should be put in the Parish Bulletin. Also the number of those who've paid their dues should be also put in this bulletin.
From year to year, and during each year the Parish as a whole can evaluate just how much of the money made by the Knights is actually leaving the Parish and going to Connecticut. And just exactly how much the Knights claim to be charitable..actually is spent on Charity.
@primoabruzzi All of these things are already being recorded...and reported.... each year. We do a semi-annual audit of every Council. All monies are reconciled using GAAP. We also tally up the actual hours of service provided by our membership. Right now, we are at about 70,000,000 HOURS per year! The IRS is totally satisfied as to our being a truly legitimate organization. We do what we say we do, and we prove it to the IRS each year!
Every pastor or bishop should refused to allow the knights of columbus into their parishes unless the knights allow independent ongoing audit of any monetary transactions of the councils.
The Parish Priest should be able to personally view each and every intake and expenditure of money in the Council that they allow to function in their Parish. And if not, he should appoint two others who aren't in bed with the Knights to do so.
hm that's nice, so basically god says love me or you burn forever. That's the equivalent of a stranger walking up to you on the street, holding a gun to your head, and saying love me or I shoot. That's not love, that's an ultimatum. if my son didn't love me, I wouldn't make him suffer for it, BECAUASE I LOVE HIM!
Totally! Yeah.

renervuelta, I wonder if you're a Senator or Congressman. Or a press agent.
The Knights of Columbus is a separate organization from Holy Mother the Church. Therefore it's somewhat parasitic in nature. Here's why.
If a Men's Club holds a fund raiser.. all the money stays in the parish.
It cannot be that way in the KofC.. and I personally believe with good reason that the KofC skims some of the money..
