Hitler was not smart by any means. He was charismatic which was tragic for Germany and the rest of the world. He was not smart though and really handicapped his military. Lucky for all us that he did. Just look at Dunkirk alone. He held back the army just to put his generals in their place and establish who was boss. It was a good film. But not a great film like it could have been. The reason being - they didn't use the villain. The whole film builds towards assassinating Hitler, but it gives us no reason to hate him in the film. Its not enough to rely on people's historical knowledge of events and his nature. It needs to be in your face, so to speak. The film has the who and the how and the when. Where is the why???? Anyone who went to see it and knew there was something missing, this is your answer...

Well in the very beginning Klaus Schenk von Stauffenberg explains his hate towards the Reich. Afterall, somebody who doesn't know who Hitler was and what he did probably won't go and the see the movie, except for some Tom Cruise fans but they'll have ready everything about it.

The film was as much about the after events - the coup, as the main event itself, which is brilliant, and which few people know about.

It was a great film, and a great portrayal of events without the usual over-the-top Hollywood crap.

You soon forget its Tom, as we never see them teeth !.

Great tension, easy to follow, enjoyable, educational, best film I've seen for ages.

And i did'nt fall asleep once !

Yes i agree with you that it didn't have the usual hollywood bullshit in tow. I hope more hollywood directors follow Bryan Singer's lead and make more films like this.Thats why i said it was a good film. Cruise was good too. There were only 6 other people in the cinema when i went. They were all old. THEY KNEW THE WHY. No young people are interested in seeing it at all. Let me give you one example. The film Braveheart is great rather than just good, because it depicts the villain(King Edward Ist) and the evil that he does, brilliantly. You hate him and desperately root for the hero - Wallace. This film didn't have that. Hitler was portrayed as so 'weak' and 'quiet' that he was totally unthreatening?! Wrong actor...

Hilter isn´t the point, actually Valkyrie shows a lot more of Hitler than other movies, and we all know he was evil.

Considering the director, it was a great improvement over Superman Returns. A controversial subject, a a decent cast too are treated pretty well according to the original story. Not the greatest WWII film but a good try. I could have prefered however a more convincing Hitler or Himler for sure.

Well, I saw it, it is excellent. I was afraid of what Hollywood would to Stauffenberg's motives, but they treat his beliefs & motives so slightly, they could do little damage. It is really something like a police procedural drama. All about the mechanics of the operation rather then motives & psychology. One of the central details involves the actual telegraph office transmitting the messages.
