I bought me a strikeforce fire starter and it fires EVERY time. the gerber is an just a fat stick of magnesium .and people are just buying the name BG anyway. The only reason I bought the BG is because it was the only kind they had at DICKS sporting good. Later I orderd the strikeforce. You can't beat it.

One time while kayaking down the rio grande from Santa Fe to Albuquerque I forgot to re-close my watertight bag which had my cellphone credit cards car keys an a back up lighter. Needless to say the lighter was rendered useless after being waterlogged for over two hours. A flint starter comes in handy in case of last ditch effort situation, or in my case carelessness. Haha

Usually always have a few of lighters with me or in my BOB, BIC is the best and you can get it wet and shake it off.. sparks right up. I also carry a couple of large magnesium bars and blastmatch striker (just incase). Literally would be able to light fires for years.

I'd rather take Mykel Hawke, Cody Lundin or Dave Canterbury advice ANYDAY over Bear Grylls... they atleast show you how to survive for extended periods of time...

Zippo, works for a a week, runs out of fuel and has a very capable capacity to burn the skin off your fingers. I challenge you to find a way to burn yourself with a firesteel. I normally don't give a shit bout his tactics of drinking turtle urine, but this firesteel is a good buy. It holds kindle, has a built in steel scraper, and the steel itself, for under $20. ESEE makes the same thing but charges way extra, granted they do use aluminum as the cover, but this works perfectly fine, it even comes with a whistle. Not that i'd ever need it, or will i?

There's a veritable metric ton of these types of fire starter "kits" out there. As long as the price is fair and the marketing is good, I think they have a good chance of outselling most of the competition just because the others don't stand out very well. Bear's name is well known, as well as Gerber, so as long as they're placed on an end isle in the store with a colorful package, they'll sell very well.
