It is an impurity in the material used in the back casing that can develop because of the thermal expansion properties are different than the rest of the case. It's actually a bubble molded into the plastic. It was that way brand new out of the box. Apple refused to replace it, and it's not a huge deal, but it's just disappointing to have a new toy have an aesthetic flaw when it's brand new.
What exactly am I looking at?
