It's like Romeo and Juliet, how Juliet takes the potion stuff to appear dead, and then Romeo finds her and thinks she's dead, so he takes the poison to kill himself. Only here it's that the guy doesn't seem to realise she's not permanently blind, and so gets the doctors to make him blind out of sympathy for her. It's not stupid, he's just trying to show his love and devotion towards her.
