The bulb had failed and they knew that from the test,, and they could check the landing gear by eye,,, so pratting about with the bulb caused the crash more than anything else.
Ghosts apparitions of the dead crew members on flights fitted with the cannibalised parts?? THAT'S SO AWESOME !!
The paranormal is my second favourite topic of interest next to airplanes. And I'm gonna say that this episode is one of my favourites. Thanks for uploading :)
"20.000kgs of jet fuel has now leaked into the swamp. A single spark could start a deadly blaze." – Tell me why, at 19:57, one of the rescuers is smoking a blunt!? :P
It's amazing how far we've come in the last 40 years. Fortunately, today there are many layers of safety that would prevent an accident like this from happening again.
Obviously, we know one pilot should fly the airplane (regardless of what level of automation is used) while the others troubleshoot the problem. Air Traffic Control will now intervene immediately when an aircraft deviates from its assigned altitude, autopilots have better systems to warn when they've been disconnected, and Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems would surely get the crew's attention.
can't believe this... there actually is a test to test the bulbs and they didn't believe it? :S the slim chance of a double failure became this disaster... this wasn't the bulb's fault alone... :/
@poodtang1 That's right. Over the following months and years, employees of Eastern Air Lines began reporting sightings of the dead crew members on board another L-1011 (N318EA). They made two books (John G. Fuller's 1976 book The Ghost of Flight 401, and later in Rob and Sarah Elder's 1977 book, Crash.) and two movies both about the crash (Crash of Flight 401, aired in October '78, was based on the Elders' book and The Ghost of Flight 401, aired earlier in February, was based on Fuller's book).

imagine having FOUR people in the cockpit instead of the customary two and still none of them noticed the danger or the alarms going off.
