the camera on the BOTTOM of the device is for mapping the floor, to optimise it's cleaning patterns across the floor. just as the top camera, on the high end model, maps the ceiling to further improve it's mapping algorithms.
the camera on the bottom of the device is at the BACK, so if it was for "not falling off the stairs", it would be too late before it detected the stairs.
there are infra red sensors on the FRONT BOTTOM of the device for detecting drops.
