I totally agree with those who said: That's jamming!! that's music its all about, that's progressive rock and yeah! it rocks!!!!!! This era of Camel was simply hot!! Particulary this song (I prefer the version on: A Live Record, it makes me cry everytimes!!) The duo guitar-sax is awesome, you hear! AWESOME... the diaolog between them is simply amazing composition and playing. That's pure music... it grooves me into my soul!! :)
caravan and camel musicians swapped bands with such frequency during this period they should just have formed 1 big band and called themselves CARAMEL
@uacho really, no jam at all? Im not sure if youre saying that because this is a track off of Moonmadness, or because you hate it. But whatever it is you think, I say its absolutely brilliant.
@SephynnXx You misunderstandme, this song is an absolutly genious piece of art. Its in my opinion the best camel song. What ive intended to said with "no jam at all" is that there is no free improvisation, everything that you hear in this performance is well rehearsed and absolutly great.
pre vcr days sat evening sept 77 bbc2 sight & sound in concert my ma decided enoughs enough and put bruces gener flippin ration game on....worst day of my life! but hey you tube to the rescue
Thanks for the info. I hear you, but as I am Piss poor, that just ain't going to happen anytime soon (Abyway Bass is my main instrument, and money pit :)
@sprojojoing it looks like a roland rs 202 analog string machine routed through a small stone phaser effect in my humble opinion you should forget about software and try to get a real analog machine (crumar performer , crumar multiman , rs 202 ,korg delta , hohner string machine , arp solina ...farfisa syntorchestra ....ETC
ah it is a soprano sax, not a synth; 'tis sweet to know this at long last; awesome matrix of instruments; tricky it is to pin Camel into a music genre, thus, all of 'em plus their own: genre de Camel
@puggo Maybe the MinMoog was mis-bahaving for Peter Bardens so he had to jump off of it. It semed to have gone out of tune after he played it a little. Latimer probably motioned for him to get away from it. I'd say it threw Pete off.
@uacho : Yes, and it deserves100 X more viewings than this. There are plenty of Camel fans out there, so I am very surprised that this has so few viewings.
Well Gruntol I guess it just reflects our dreadful taste in music. Lady Gaga's Bad Romance has >175,000,000 viewings, so I'm headed over there to get educated
@whisky2roxy : I must warn you whisky that watching Lady Gaga results in an immediate 50% loss in your I.Q. On further viewing you will find your arms growing longer, until finally your knuckles start dragging on the ground. At the same time, your lower jaw goes slack and your mouth is permanently open. Only then will you feel "part of the real world." Proceed at your risk.
Thanks so much for posting this .... Moonmadness was one of my very first album purchases way back and it's great to see this version being played live .... yeah, what a great guitar solo -- beautiful biting tone
look, i just don't think this version is staying true to the original. it has too much of a "poppy" sound that seems very early 80's. the guitar work is flawless, bass work is outstanding, drumming is perfect, but the keys just don't have that classic camel sound. don't get me wrong, bardens is awesome; he plays this version too differently for my taste. as far as the sax playing in this song, it just isn't needed. plain and simple.
it's not so much that i think the sax steals latimer's thunder... though i am inclined to feel that way a little... it's mostly the fact that that intro guitar solo was absolutely perfect before. to me, anything other than the way it was played originally will never be as good. that said, still a great song!
first off, i'd to state that this prog rock masterpiece has the coolest synthesizer solo ever recorded. nothing even comes close to it. however on this version, peter starts off his solo on the minimoog. this is what was used on the studio recording and other live versions prior to 1977 (NOT including the version on "camel: a live record"). after the first two parts and then a break, he switches to a roland rs-202 string/synth. it sounds awful! the solo just does not sound the same. oh well...
Great sound for a great song and great video. One of the best guitar solos in the history of rock! And the best of progressive rock
It's a fascinating mix from Andy Latimer, the triplets, riffs, and tap with a membership hallucinating especially for creating the atmosphere of that sea mole that is probing the camel with his great-Bell, and that since the earth provides absorbed the man, petrified and dumbfounded (see top of the album "Moonmadness")
It's a great pity that more people don't watch this fabulous performance by Camel. Personally, I'm totally addicted to this (and much of their other performances)- and just have to come back every few days.
Thank you so much for posting this. Now that Camel has ceased to exist, apparently forever, it's great to be able to see them in performance. An opportunity I was never able to find during their lifespan. What a great band, in all their incarnations.

This is a great song, which kind of reminds me of a band I've heard a few days ago, Aperco. Hear the similarity at their channel apercoband

The biggest issue with this is the minimoog being so low in the mix...Peter Bardens must be heard!
