Well, to be honest I picked Nightcrawler because Mystique was in that scene, Kurt's mother. I thought I'd orchestrate a family reunion between the two. XD Of course Mystique and her deception would leave Nightcrawler 6 feet under. But at least the little guy got to say hi to his Mom before getting tricked into the trap.
It was also to show that during that cutscene, Nightcrawler teleports down the broken floor. Very few people know that. ;)
lolll, of all the people to throw in a pit... you pick Nightcrawler?? That's almost the same as throwing (Arch)Angel in a pit, hahaha.
