I dunno. It seems to combine AOR's big, dramatic melodic bombast with the heaviness of the riffs and rhythm of Heavy Metal. Potentially Pop Metal or Melodic Metal is a good genre name here. Either way, its like Journey meets Scorpions meets Van Halen.
This is a very eavy sound, not a heavy metal type sound but a very well put together killer rock sound and Sammy's vocals are killer on this live track! Well done, great live killer footage of some rock greats!! Awesome stuff and amazing track!

Thank you for posting. I have a bootleg cassette of this concert and, I was lucky enough to be able to get ahold of the vinyl album a few years after they were no more.
I pretty sure It's still available for purchase (Geffen released in on cd in the 90s.) I have all of the extras (found on the net) that didn't make it onto the original lp and cd.
It does have the sound of Neal but it definitely sounds like Sammy Hagar. You should listen to Standing Hampton or Three Lock Box. But I can hear the mix in the two artists.

I had a copy of this on CD a few years ago. I remember this from an MTV concert. The Cd was the same songs, but the audience was cut out...or at least, thats what the CD sounded like.
@bucky468 Neal Schon is way too good to be confined in any single category. Check out his stuff with the band named, 'Hardline', and see for yourself what he could do as a metal guitarist as well.
@bucky468 You should do your homework on Neal Schon. He was playing with Carlos Santana at 15 years old and turned down an offer from Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos. You don't get invitations at 15 to play with musical legends like Santana and Clapton unless you can play anything.
HSAS stopped because the bass player was a quick hire, and Michael Shrive, though legendary, was not a good rock drummer for this music and, frankly though is Woodstock solo on Soul Sacrifice is one of the greatest recorded, I guess he never really had any straight rock experience. Schon and Hagar should have kept at least some sort of projects together, even through his tenure in Van Halen.
Also, just another point on Bad English. Schon had nothing much to do with the formation of Bad English. Untold story is that he declined to join Bad English at the time, so the searched for another guitarist. They actually offered the gig to Andy Timmons (later of Danger Danger and just an awesome guitarist). Just before they set off to their thing, I guess Schon had a change of heart (guess he didn't have too much going on at the time), so they obviously took him in and discharged Timmons.
Just how awesome is this song? I remember having the album and a rather dodgy video of the concert many moons ago. This has just brought all the memories flooding back! the drawback is that I'm now feeling decidedly middle aged aswell! :(
FYI, They only played a few shows. I think they were in San Jose, San Francisco and San Rafael. I saw both of their shows in San Francisco. It was early 1984, probably February or March.
HSAS....WOW, I first bought this album in 1984 the year I graduated from HighSchool.....I still have it and still listen too it, but I found it on cd at a local cd resale shop....One of my favorite rock album of all time !!
Giza/Valley of the Kings does most rock!!!! this was probably one of the best ideas of early 80's rock and roll. as gay as it looks, at the time and still now KICKS FUKN ASS!!!! rock on Sammy :)
Yep. And if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Neal about 15 or 16 years old at the time? God, how cool would it be to play a show like that at that age?
I really like this song. I wish someone would post "Giza/Valley of the Kings" from this show too. Neal's guitar work on it is so heavy and just killer. I have it on VHS but don't have any way to post it here or I would.
One of the best of the 80's supergroup compilation projects. Sammy & Neal, that's obvious, but does anyone remember the other two initials of the HSAS.. Hagar-Schon-Aronson-Shrieve... I can't remember what bands the last two came from... anyone?
This is such a great record. I've loved it all these years. Thanks for posting this! How did anyone ever get it in their mind that this was a "VH" audition??!!!
Awesome finding some HSAS on vid, b een one of my favorite little known releases going back to my vinyl collection. Anyone has anymore vid from the HSAS shows (especially Hot & Dirty, Top of the Rock, or Giza) I'd love to see it!
This was on VHS back in the day. I got a DVD dupe of this off E-Bay. All the songs from the album are on it as well as some songs that didn't appear on the album. Best 20 bucks I've ever spent on E-Bay.
Well, this was the Van Halen audition for Sammy Hagar because he had joined them shortly after this collaboration. But it really makes me think what would've, could've been if Sammy Hagar and Neal Schon had been together ever since by not going to Van Halen and Journey, respectively. It would've been very intriguing because I think they really had some great elements and chemistry here. Well, isn't life interesting?
HSAS was recorded in 1983. Sammy made another solo album, VOA, featuring "I can't drive 55" in 1984 and joined Van Halen in 1986. Before 5150 was released he made a final solo album due to his contract with Geffen Records titled "I Never Said Goodbye" So no, it wasn't an audition because at the time VH was busy recording their album 1984, which was released 1-1-1984.
