Setting up a voluntary charity to help people in foreclosure is a good thing, but forcing people to pay is just theft.
More people will try to figure out how to get some.
Why should someone pay their 600k mortgage, even if they could afford to, when their house is now only worth 300k? Its not just subprime borrowers that are walking away, its everybody who bought a house that has gone down in value.
