@FUCKSALT666 The Toner + Corn Oil is a hoax. Please don't waste your money on toner like I did. Printer toner is not magnetic. Printer developer is. But even developer will leave you with a nasty non-fluidic result because the iron particles are too big in the developer. You need iron particles of 10nm width. And burning steel wool makes mostly particles that are too small. Then you need a surfactant. It's much easier to just buy commercially made ferrofluid than to try to make it yourself.

@kaplan1616 It's actually very interesting the live experience with a ferrofluid. You can touch it, you can spin it. I even made a small magnetic ball, filling a baloon with ferrofluid. Using a bigger magnet, we can pull and push it as much as we want.
