His stats are an illusion. He runs for 4.3 YPC because Brady, Moss, and Welker are spreading the D. Safeties are playing back, LB are lining up over the slot, which opens up major running lanes - which Maroney should be able to exploit for more than 4.3 YPC.

For example, Kevin Faulk had 6.1 YPC. He's also a better receiver. He's also better in blitz pickup.

Now, look at Maroney during obvious running situations. It's not good. Which is why Sammy Morris gets the ball

But you have to wonder, most defenses worry about the pass so much that Maroney should have been able to tear it up in the run game. Plus he keeps getting injured and can't stay healthy. For a team that runs a lot, getting 4.3 is damn good, but for a passing orientated team, and with being a first rounder and a lot of hype, he's just a regular and most likely a backup RB.

If you look down the list of our 5 starters, they're generally tiny compared to most offensive lineman, and you need a lot of strength and push to be a good run blocker. I just think they wasted that first round pick on him because he just turned out to be a normal RB. And even if the linemen are smaller, they can still create holes, not large ones, but he should be able to get through them well enough.

Look- he did FINE in '06 and '07 while splitting carries. They didn't draft him as a premiere back, they drafted him as a solid back who would split carries, which is what he has been. He had a BROKEN BONE in his shoulder last year and still played 2 more games with it, and didn't notice it until the offseason. I'm pretty sure one bad year doesn't make him a bad running back. You just can't expect a single halfback on the Patriots to amass a 1,000 yard season.

Maroney and Barber played on the same team in college, and have very similar running styles AND almost IDENTICAL stats. The only reason (and i'm dead serious about this) that Barber had more yards and TD's is because the amount of touches he has. The Patriots are a pass first, run second team.

Also the WR doesn't always make the QB look good. Tom Brady has gone to pro-bowls and won superbowls by throwing to guys like David Givens, Doug Gabriel and Reche Caldwell.
