nice video. I am planning to buy a 540 here in ARgentina. But no one can tell me the consumption at 140km/h. Would you tell me how much gasoline it uses to run 100 kilometers please?

Estoy tentadísimo por un 540 E39, del 1998, pero muchos amigos (todos gracias a mi anterior Mercedes Benz) me dicen que es muy caro de mantener, que requiere ir al taller muy seguido, que los amortiguadores EDC duran menos de 80.000km y que el mantenimento es terriblemente caro. La verdad me desanima un poco, pero aún persisto. Es tan así? te agradecería mucho tu opinión por favor.

@GustavoMS40 Tienes que saber que este coche tienta a correr. Si corres, si, puede gastar muchisimo. Si te restringes a 140 y mantenerlos, no pasara de los 13l.

No te puedo hablar de los amortiguadores, yo tengo un e34 que tiene amortiguacion sport. No duran mucho, es un coche pesado, pero unos muelles nuevos cuestan alrededor de 1000€, lo cual suena bastante, pero es un coche que valia mucho dinero. Pero no es como que se rompa todos los dias, cambia muelles y no necesitar taller por mucho.

Hola, muchas gracias por tu email. No soy de correr me gustan los autos para "navegar". Me gustan los "botes" y el placer de conducir. Pero, claro, en caminos despejados, también me gusta correr, pero no como forma de viajar, sino más bien para sentir la sensación del "fierro". por ello busco comprarme un buen fierro y pensé en un 540. En mercedes benz, para esos precios y esos años, no veo nada que sea tan lindo como un serie 5, E39. Muchas gracias.

The 540 takes up too much gas when driving in traffic and stop & go situations.

I own a 525i 24V 94 and I can use it full throttle and I can afford to put gas, it doesn´t happen the same with the 540, but the M60 V8 is an amazing engine. Juan from Argentina

lol this big car is fast, i would buy myself a 540 also but since im still a student and living with scholarship i cant afford all the gasoline that this thing consumes so i think im better off with the 525TDS altho it sounds like a tractor and goes accelerates worse than a tractor, this 540 is very fast and it would be a blast in town, 0 to 50km/h in less then 3 seconds :D

Its only the model that changes. From e34 all the way to e60 u can buy 540i with the "4.0L" engine!

there's no replacement for displacement, i think the m60b40 is one of the best engines from BMW also with the m30b35

what diff ratio are you using? I'm doing a 6 speed manual conversion and want a diff that will give 60mph at the rev limit in 2nd gear

The original limited slip diff for the automatic is 3.15 if I'm right.

If a 6 second 0-60 is slow, what is fast? This car is made to be a reliable daily driver. Any car that does 0-60 in under 4 seconds isn't even really practical to drive, you'd need 10.5+ inch tires to get traction on a full size car with any faster acceleration than this. Who am I kidding, you most likely drive a Civic hatchback.

But if you look at my profile you will see that I'm Irish, and we and the Brits had the problem too!(Ireland and the UK also had the misfortune of having the problem with the M52 engine too, because Euro M52s used Nikasil if they had VANOS, when BMW upgraded the engine to double VANOS in 98 they gave it iron linings instead and that solved the problem, US M52 engines never used Nikasil hence no problem).

E34 535i with straight 6 engine and 540i V8 are strongly recomended. They are fast, practical and even cheap in "everyday use".

Bombproof, lovely cars, I've got one...they are one of the best bmw ever.
