I might like this new system. SW has had my business from the first day I've flown and I was practically a walking commercial for them. But as I've come to find out today, I can't use any of my old credits to book flights since they apparently don't convert over. This is a MAJOR turnoff for me. Using the conversion they give us, the credits I have should be more than enough points to book the flight I want but I am still required to get the 16 credits to book a round trip. Makes no sense....
Ryan Green is a poor spokesman for you. Hire a pro - someone likable. SWA execs need to take marketing 101! As Sr. Director of Customer Loyalty etc. neither he nor your board seem to have a good command of how you might show your customer's that you truly appreciate them. Just read these posts! All this tired old "NEW & iMPROVED" lie is no more than the same old corporate PR double-speak blather. And yes ... fix your telephonic customer service. It's essentially non-existent right now,
I can't believe this absolutely terrible customer service. I'm told that I need to call the Dallas customer service number to be able to use my account... good luck!! this number is always busy, and does not allow you to even wait on the line. there is no automated answering system just a busy signal and you're kicked out!!! is this happening in the united states?????
What about our Companion Pass? How do I found out how many pts total I have now w/the new system? I don't care about A-List. I just want to make sure my husband can travel free w/me when we fly Southwest 2 times a month as he has for the last 2 years w/a Companion Pass. We spend a heck of a lot of money on our credit card to get pts, but how can I find my total? I call your RR # & wait on hold for 45 min. & the reps can't even tell my where to find that answer nor can they tell me my total #
Southwest is a WONDERFUL carrier & I love its "We don't take ourselves TOO seriously vibe"; however, remember, whenever a business changes something "to serve you better" the *real* story is usually "to serve our company better."
In addition, they clearly say, "If there is a seat available for purchase, you can you your reward to get the seat". That is not true. I log in and act like I want to pay for a seat, and I can. But when I use seatfinder, it says the seat is not available.
Everybody is saying "I cancelled my SW card"... Don't do that people it lowers your credit score! Ask Chase if they will change your reward program instead!
Could they have botched this thing up any worse? What a PR fiasco, SWA has frittered away 40yrs of goodwill with this ill-considered change. Once I figure how the hell to get my grandfathered awards back I'm going to book my final trip on SWA. I've already cancelled their useless credit card.
This is really stupid, all you're doing is making it HARDER to know when you are close to getting an award. When the system is more complicated to understand then people are less likely to utilize it, which means SW won't have to give out as many free flights. How disappointing from what used to be my favorite airline...
This video would be great if your site actually functioned the way you represent it to. Well, it's been over a week now and I am still unable to see details of my account!! The Reps are telling the Customer to come back in April, the bugs should be worked out.
Unacceptable, and sorry to say, but I think you should be demoted to Jr. Director!! This poorly executed web site upgrade reflects a gross lack of planning and testing.
I had 2 free flights under the old program. I converted them over to the new and "IMPROVED" program and had just shy of 8,000 pts. Ok, so what does that mean? I wanted to use a free rewards ticket to attend a function in VA. I need almost 34K points to book a free trip. So basically SW said we will no longer hone your free tickets and we don't want you as a customer anymore.
terrible new program changing all are created equal we are not equal and the seats are not big for extra bucks The average traveler doesn't know the difference . The business man does 4 flights to west coast from Fl. free ticket and 150%after 25000 miles a yr. No deal here they think we can't think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY ARE NOT THE CHEAPEST
If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Hopefully they will read some of these comments and realize that this is not doing anyone any good. I only flew SW up until now. I am leaving for a trip in March, but that may be the last time I give them my business.
What happened to Southwest making everything so easy. Looks like it might be worth getting miles from the competitors and trade my companion pass for a first class seat for a change.
What happened to Southwest making everything so easy. Looks like it might be worth getting miles from the competitors and trade my companion pass for a first class seat for a change.
I used to receive 2 credits for a "Wanna Get Away" round trip flight between BWI and BUF. SWA indicates the following conversion rate: 1,200 points = 1 credit. That means I used to receive the equivalent of 2,400 points for this trip. I just booked this trip under the new program and received 587 points. 587/2,400 = 0.245. conclusion: The new program is rewarding at about 25% the rate as the old one. Way to go, SWA. I used to go out of my way to fly w/u. Not anymore.
@jdwarns I looked at that myself today. I use to get 2 credits from ALB to MCO and now its only worth 1800 with Wanna Get Away. I had 8 credits under the old system and now its going to take me 10 more flights to get the free flight...
and the people almost at the A-list level really got dicked over by this one
I am also disappointed with the new system. I've been a loyal customer of SWA for 6 years and have qualified for a companion pass for the last 3 years. I have multiple awards waiting to be used but when I tried to book a flight to JAX almost a month out there are no flights available to get there from LAS. I'll give this new system a good try but so far, my feeling is that if it doesn't improve, SWA has lost a customer.
I have a free reward that expires this summer, but everytime I try to book there are no seats available to use it. I wanted to combine 2 free tix for the Freedom Pass, but now they won't let me do that, either. It seems like they set it up to where I'll lose my free tix now. And needless to say, my SWA Visa is canceled and I'm back earning Continental miles!
This new program absolutely rewards heavy users who fly often and use the anytime or business select. For people like me who do not fly as often, but used my credit card to gain points, I am hurt by it. If I flew twice a year from STL to PHX and spent $14K on my credit card, I get a free flight. Now I will need to spend an additional $1K on my card for a free flight. Also if that is free flight is more expensive than I need even more points. This will hurt SWA with the little guy.
Remember when SW had a simple and straightforward website (sure it wasn't aesthetically pleasing, but that could have changed without more crude)? Funny how the AA website was jumbled up and complicated and trimmed things off when the designer Dustin Curtis pointed out some problems. Now SW's website is going to look like AA's old site.
Wow, thought SW was one of the remaining few companies that didn't try to screw its customers. Until now, I would go out of my way to fly SW..so far as even flying SW and then renting a car to get to my final destination to avoid other airlines. NOT ANY MORE. They've just become like all the rest.
Very disappointing. Southwest has always operated at a high level of transparency and authenticity. This video and the transition in this effort pretty much goes against what has made SWA so great. Let's say it is what it is...a poor attempt to change a program that worked for many customers to something that rewards business travelers. Be honest...say you didn't make enough money and you wanted to make more...casual travelers who could do eight low cost trips lose their free trip now...
@NOTVERYHAPPYSWA so very true I am a casual traveler and I don't know how I could ever earn enough points through the new system as most of my flights are from ALB to BWI
Last year I even had a companion pass. What you did to win me over to SW was something that won my heart and my business. But if you don't continue doing those things in any relationship you can't expect to keep the heart. We dated a long time SW , but the LUV is gone.
@dbuehrle OHHHHH, the Stl to CLE route has been so very well travelled by me. I am so upset with SWA, who was my *favorite*--no NON stops to CLE from STL any longer. As well as higher prices, and who can figure out the rewards program??? SWA are YOU reading any of these comments??? There is not one positive comment.

Southwest has lost its way. It no longer understands what brought it success: simplicity and ease of use. They started with the easiest web site and easiest process. Now, their web site is so jumbled and full of crap that they need a video to explain how to use it. They destroyed the simplicity of credits by going to points. A sad day for those of us who fly SWA.
I will now be canceling my SW credit card..SW has now made it almost impossible to earn a free round trip..SW now joins the ranks of every other airlines..Greedy, and it seems SW is even being less than Honest..This plan does not help the average flyer's, but it does help SW.Do not be fooled.. SW has now shown it has nothing but contempt for us the paying customers..
SW is treating us as if we are stupid.. Shame on you SW! Pissed off in FL
Since I don't have the time to wait 30 minutes to find out of I have lost the confirmed round trip flight confirmation of credits sitting in my account, can someone else tell me? I have the piece of paper in front of me that says my ticketless information certification numbers are ready to book. I have until November 24, 2011 to use these. Are they now telling me its no good???
I think part of the business model here is the complexity will result in loss of balances - Seems there is no advantage advantage to having a linked credit card.
What was wrong with miles and dollars? The great old program?
Just completed some math with regard to the new system vs the old system. Here is just one example. I fly from Midland, Texas to Dallas which generates 469 points. After converting my credits into points, i still ned 12K points to realize a free flight. I now must pay for 12.75 flight to reach 12K. I used to fly 8 round trips and obtain a free flight. New system reduces the number of -total- free flights that can be earned and increases the number of paid flights.Insults my intelligence.
I love how SWA says it's easier to earn trips becasue of points. With the old system I received 2 credits for every roundtrip flight between San Diego and Phoenix. Now with points I will have to fly 2 roundtrips (4 segments) to earn one credit figuring I'm purchasing the cheapest fare!! How is this better earning??? Basically, this new system rewards the people who can afford to buy the higher priced fares. This system benefits SWA not the passenger. Time to return to United Airlines.
@mrsmaz13 When I clicked on "What Happened to my credits & awards", the view it took me to shows how I need 15 credits for a free flight...so I freaked out for a second like wtf happened to the awards I already earned. I found them under "What about my awards" > "View full list of awards". Happy hunting.
I have been flying SWA since 1986, how disappointing to see this once fine airline finally fall into the same trap as the rest of the airlines. I knew something was up when they started charging for early check in instead of first come first serve. Next they will be charging for bags. I will think long and hard before I drive 180 miles to Nashville to take a SWA flight. I am glad that Vision and Frontier are now or soon will be flying from Knoxville. See you later SWA and SWA Visa!
Mr. Green this new RR program instills neither loyalty or a sense of partnership in your current RR members. This is your department, fix it. Freedom Fares should be reinstated and or awards should be convertible to points to be used with any other points accumulated since the program change. If SWA does not change course on this program, this will be another classic example of what not to do, and how not to do it, taught at the May Business School in a few years hence.
Wow, that's pretty shady. You essentially just made it harder to earn rewards and are trying to market this as a good thing. As much as you want to believe it, your passengers aren't that stupid.
This sucks because I liked flying SWA and now I will go out of my way to avoid it. If you don't value me as a customer I'll take my business to someone who will.
I would be dumping my SWA stock if I were an employee. This management blunder is going to be costly for some time. Making our award certificates worth less could be a legal problem in terms of a class action suite. VISA can't be pleased. If you need help finding another credit card with better airline miles program, start here: creditcards dot org slash airline
Freedom Fares was part of the RR program and they killed that on Feb.28. Now you have no way to book seats on busy routes, even if you want to use two awards. Mr. Green's email FAQ states the old rules apply. This process of implementing this change is fought with deception and is killing customer loyalty.
dont buy the crapola about things being the same - in February eight round trips between OAK and SEA got you a free flight - to say Orlando - now in March that same seat takes 69,000 points or 82 round trips, Oh and you cant use your old free trips anymore even though they say "every seat on every plane is a reward seat" Remember SWA what happend to UAL, DELTA, PAN AM, TWA - they all treated their customers like dirt and they all went bankrupt or exited the industry Buh Bye and my 3 Visas too
So I spent 35 minutes on the phone, waiting, and waiting and waiting....I got to hear 35 mins of "Welcome to the NEW SWA Rapid Rewards system,a much easier way to earn FREE travel, and no blackout dates"I think I heard the woman repeat it at least 15 times while on hold...My blood boiled more and more as I waited. Do they REALLY think this is better? REALLY??Its too bad.Another company making a poor decision, to increase bottomline. IMO, SWA is stil best airline, but this is a HUGE step back
I called this week to book a flight, pressed the option to get expidited rapid rewards service and was on hold for over 30 minutes. I hung up and called again and did not press the rr option and was still over 30 minutes on hold. I have never been on hold with SW over 5 minutes. What a mess this is.
Bottom line, this makes it much harder to get credits in the future in a timely manner. This appears (using my Excel) to be a net loss for most travelers on SW that are not business flyers who are always in the air.
I was one roundtrip away from getting a free flight so I booked a trip to see a friend in December for Travel next week. Then a week after I booked it they announced the change....now i will have to buy points just to get my free flight even after this trip?? FAIL!!
Rediculous...anything that was booked before the announced change should stay under the old system and I should get my credit.
It took a phone call and 4 days to straighten out my A-List qualification through the end of 2012. Just this morning they finally fixed my companion pass to also be through the end of 2012. Certainly the transition could have been better but in the end they corrected the problems. I think the new program is perfect. It rewards business travelers the most because they spend the most. This keeps the flights cheaper for the rest of us. Great program just the transition could have been better.
This new system - pretending to be good for SW frequent flyers - is a complete rip off to loyal Southwest flyers like me! I can get a free flight faster on United. So bye bye Southwest and Southwest credit card. I just applied for a United one. It's $400 plus dollars to fly one way to Chicago in May if you try to get max points.

I don't fly far so my flight is never more than $69 dollars. I was ONE FLIGHT away from a free round trip, but now I have to fly 3 flights?? Or upgrade to business class?
@fureysdsu although I will add that obtaining free flights in the future will be A LOT quicker. 10 flights rather than 16 will get me a free flight :]
Southwest Airlines used to have the best rewards program ... a major reason I always looked at their flights first. Unfortunately, the keyword is "used to".
Way to make things more confusing and screw up a good system. There whole point of this is to confuse us so that we get less value for our so call "points" as they put it. Who ever came up with this idea in the board room needs to have his or her a$s kicked.
Well I guess all good things find a way to end. I used to fly America West because I could upgrade to first class with my points and get a few free trips a year with all my travels. Then I gave up the first class to ride the cattle cars for more free flights. I missed the first class, but enjoyed more pleasure trips. We'll I guess it's back to first class for me. Thanks LUV/SWA and Ryan or whoever should have been fired for this.
though sw still will be one of my first choices... i expect to do more price-comparisons now.
hey... it's your company and you can do whatever you think is best. but regardless of your spin, customers are getting less value. this seems especially true for those who have to dump newly-earned points into the old credit system.
like they say... don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
I love flying SW, but i am extremely confused by the new point system. I have to say while this won't cause me to switch preferred airlines (due to free bags and friendly staff), I am very disappointed in the switch from the extremely user friendly old system. Not a good move, but still a great airline!
I was so close to A List upgrade and my 2nd free flight, now it's all gone (as far as accumulation) and I'm back to square one. Not a happy camper, Southwest!
I am trying to do some merge they suggest on the site but it tells me it no longer recognizes me. I used up all my free flights prior to this change and am now calling to cancel my Visa cards. SW just took a huge step backwards and this is already going to adversely effect their business. Many choices in air today. With my new card even my bags fly free on other airlines. No SW this was not your best move, say good bye to LUV
Why won't SWA allow "credits" in the old system to convert to "points" in the new system? It would seem that the you're trying to orphan my credits so I can't use them! I currently have 15.25 credits - almost enough for a flight, but if I converted to points, then I could book a flight today!
What Marketing genius decided to keep both credits and points for existing customers. Why oh why didn't you convert existing credits over to points. That would have made a lot more sense than keeping both systems around for a while, and having to convert new points back into credits to earn a reward. Simply brilliant (NOT). Also, you market this as "new and improved". It is not improved. Now, a typical round trip flight will be lucky to earn the equivalent of 1 credit instead of 2.
@monty4211 - I've been a Midwest/Frontier member since 1998. Last year I tried to use 100k worth of points 7 months prior to traveling on Frontier. No dice. Full blackout. No availability. It's tough all over.
I am not so sure I like the new system. I am not a business traveler. My trips are usually are for pleasure. I am not happy about the points system. We will see how this works. I might us another airlines to fly to Las Vegas and other destinations. At least I will get frequent flyer miles from them.
So much for LUV! You guys are acting like a large, unemotional corporation. Where's the fun videos that you guys are known for. Boring and an ineffective change.
I was half-way to A-List - flying frequently Phoenix-Columbus. After the changes to Rapid Rewards, I am looking at US Airways, and flew them on m last trip to Phoenix.
Omg they can't even get a stupid youtube vid right now. The sound doesn't work past 30 secs in....I, as with most ppl, am EXTREMELY disappointed with this move. I was so loyal to SWA all these years but not sure i see the point now.
Wow! Looks like SWA got tired of being the best airline in the country. The video is hysterical...as soon as he turns away for the camera, it starts sounding like the adults in the Charlie Brown specials. Nice job, Southwest!!!
Very disappointed with this move. It is unfortunate that SW dominates travel in this corner of the country, which practically forces me to use them while traveling short distances. I am extremely unhappy with this change, since it dicourages frequent flyer loyalty. It has nothing to do with how easy or hard it may be to get to your rewards on the computer - it's all about how painfully slow it will be now to earn those rewards. Shame on you, SW, for turning on us.
I have always flown SW as my carrier of choice. No longer and just not because of the new RR program. They are now the highest price airline out there. I just got a new USAirways Master Card. They are cheaper and less hassle, believe it or not!
This was the best they could do, huh?! Unbelievable. I understand, that you're not willing to award flights, let's say, r/t within the state of Texas, where fliers use SWA like it's a bus stop - going from Houston to Dallas.... But this new process is overtly and deliberately confusing for those of us who travel extensively. Ironically, the social media world and technology (apart from SWA) is getting more user friendly. Not in this case... crazy making for sure. - an A-List member
I was ready to move my business to another card, since Southwest takes longer to get rewards, especially flights, than other programs.
And now, with this revised program, I see just another energy sink - I'm streamlining my financial programs and since this doesn't speed up and increase my rewards/flights, I'll be using another card for my charging.
Having SW target business & distance flyers rather than the larger regional segment is an IMMENSELY bad move on their part. Yes, bags fly free and yes, there are no change fees, but I would rather fly on US Air and actually KEEP my points and earn free flights and have to pay for the bag fees than never accumulate enough points to get a free flight on SW. I am extremely disappointed with the company and will most likely cancel my acct. & stay with US Air, which is also based here in Phoenix!
The audio was greatly reduced when the speaker turned toward the computer. I will give it a chance, but not optimistic. What about points earned on credit card use?
What are the benefits of this change to the customer? The fact that SWA needs a video demo to explain this change immediately tells me it's not intuitive enough. I'll have to see for myself.
After the update, unable to even log into my account. i get a general error. Not just on one computer but all. So I have been unable to review my account. Tried calling but I don't have time to wait for a representative. Starting to think it is time to change airlines.
I'm already an "A-List" member now through en of 2012. Why can't I see how close I am to being an "A-List Preferred" member? And not having a rolling calendar is not good.
This new system is ridiculously confusing. I used to know exactly when I would have earned a new flight. Now, between my old credits and new points, I can't know this until I go to book a flight and see what happens. And I too have been trying to find out how I can convert my old "credits" to new "points", but customer service says there is no way to do this. Why not? At least this way I would have a complete understanding of how much redeeming power I have earned.
I have to agree somebody should have reviewed the video. Not in focus at all. Southwest is punishing the regional flyers like myself and rewarding long distance travleers. It's ironic because they started out targeting regional flyers. Don't forget yoru roots southwest. I don't want to use partners to gain more points. I have my choice of hotel I aquire points at so I don't feel like I should be punished because I don't want to participate in partner company programs.
Seriously. I read the comments before watching the video, so I decided to try the site first. I was able to find my old award in two, very easy to understand clicks. And the $50 fee is to have an expired award reissued, not to use one of the old awards. Y'all should really try reading before you start typing complaints. It's still the best system and the best site. And, no, you can't get a card that will earn you airline points for less than $59/year. At least not one that you can actually use.
@almtuber I would definitely not reissue them, then. That would only buy you a few more months of validity. Wait until they expire before you spend the $50. Until then, you may use them for free. Just click the Book Now button, right above the Reissue Now button.
joe, I see what your saying, I could almost swear that the "book now" link was not there before, but that's just me wanting to make an excuse for my oversight. The awards are good until '12. Looks like I'll be removing my b.s. statement. Ok, SWA I'm your friend again
Why won't SWA allow "credits" in the old system to convert to "points" in the new system? It would seem that the you're trying to orphan my credits so I can't use them! I currently have 15.25 credits - almost enough for a flight, but if I converted to points, then I could book a flight today!
So your old rapid rewards points are gone!! They will probably come up with a new program next year and screw you out of your credits then too!! what a joke!!
I have to agree, being a long-time SW customer, this new program is befuddling and burdensome. I received a RR notice in February, and have no idea how to redeem those rewards despite tooling around on the site for quite some time. I will have to call and wait to speak to a customer service agent. I'd have to say this 'upgrade' was poorly conceived and executed.
@djhartm - maybe it is confusing because it's new and people aren't used to it; however, SWA offers a lot better options than other airlines out there.
@hasenmoo No, its just confusing. I should have easily been able to determine how to use my existing reward certificates instead of floundering around the site looking for answers & wondering why my balance was showing '0'.
When you log in for the first time, it doesn't take you to the screen shown at 00:43. It takes you to a screen to add a Username to your account and then some other screens before you actually end up on this screen.
How unprofessional. The video is not even in focus. I am about to cancel my charge cards and I don't feel the new program fits my needs any longer. Bye bye SW. Sorry but in these highly competitive times I can earn points on other cards without paying $59 a year and you have billed this as a new and improved. But the label says I get less for the new and improved in my mind. Oh well. Good try
This new system is just too confusing. Who has the time to be looking at credits, and points, and see if gained A-list status? The simpler older system was user friendly.

What about our Companion Pass? How do I found out how many pts total I have now w/the new system? I don't care about A-List. This is really stupid, all you're doing is making it HARDER to know when you are close to getting an award. When the system is more complicated to understand then people are less likely to utilize it, which means SW won't have to give out as many free flights. How disappointing from what used to be my favorite airline...

THIS IS AWLFUL!!

terrible new program changing all are created equal we are not equal and the seats are not big for extra bucks The average traveler doesn't know the difference . The business man does 4 flights to west coast from Fl. free ticket and 150%after 25000 miles a yr. No deal here they think we can't think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY ARE NOT THE CHEAPEST

What happened to Southwest making everything so easy. Looks like it might be worth getting miles from the competitors and trade my companion pass for a first class seat for a change.

Some fun Math...
Not anymore.
jdwarns 1 year ago 10
@jdwarns I looked at that myself today. I use to get 2 credits from ALB to MCO and now its only worth 1800 with Wanna Get Away. I had 8 credits under the old system and now its going to take me 10 more flights to get the free flight...
and the people almost at the A-list level really got dicked over by this one
ridemypny05 11 months ago
I am also disappointed with the new system. I've been a loyal customer of SWA for 6 years and have qualified for a companion pass for the last 3 years. I have multiple awards waiting to be used but when I tried to book a flight to JAX almost a month out there are no flights available to get there from LAS. I'll give this new system a good try but so far, my feeling is that if it doesn't improve, SWA has lost a customer.
nca909 1 year ago

See you later SWA and SWA Visa!
frankb6323 1 year ago 2
Mr. Green this new RR program instills neither loyalty or a sense of partnership in your current RR members. This is your department, fix it. Freedom Fares should be reinstated and or awards should be convertible to points to be used with any other points accumulated since the program change. If SWA does not change course on this program, this will be another classic example of what not to do, and how not to do it, taught at the May Business School in a few years hence.
steveleerobinson 1 year ago 3
Wow, that's pretty shady. You essentially just made it harder to earn rewards and are trying to market this as a good thing. As much as you want to believe it, your passengers aren't that stupid.

I would be dumping my SWA stock if I were an employee. This management blunder is going to be costly for some time. steveleerobinson 1 year ago 2
Freedom Fares was part of the RR program and they killed that on Feb.28. Now you have no way to book seats on busy routes, even if you want to use two awards. Mr. Green's email FAQ states the old rules apply. This process of implementing this change is fought with deception and is killing customer loyalty.
steveleerobinson 1 year ago 3
dont buy the crapola about things being the same - in February eight round trips between OAK and SEA got you a free flight - to say Orlando - now in March that same seat takes 69,000 points or 82 round trips, Oh and you cant use your old free trips anymore even though they say "every seat on every plane is a reward seat" Remember SWA what happend to UAL, DELTA, PAN AM, TWA - they all treated their customers like dirt and they all went bankrupt or exited the industry Buh Bye and my 3 Visas too

Well I guess all good things find a way to end. I used to fly America West because I could upgrade to first class with my points and get a few free trips a year with all my travels.

I have to agree, being a long-time SW customer, this new program is befuddling and burdensome.
